What Is the Church to Make of Psychology?

  • Argues that interest in psychology is a potential threat to the church. One can either abdicate pastoral functions to counseling professions or value one's own counseling to the exclusion of priestly functions. The anthropology of FROMM and Skinner often excite more than Luther's or Augustine's. One must distinguish Christian theology as a `story' from psychological `models' of human nature. The pulpit must stay free of partisan models to draw through dialog with the value of each, while it does not neglect concerns for social and political justice.
