[Man and Nature in the Way of Qi – A Study of Zhu Xi’s Undifferentiated and Correlational Thinking]

  • This paper is a bold and unconventional apology of one of the fundamental confusions in the main idea of Zhu Xi, which has been criticized by almost all scholars, past and present. The bipolar li-qi framework as adopted by Zhu Xi describes natural order and moral selection as on par with each other. In other words, morality is the >manifestation< of the natural process. I approach this issue with some skepticism: Did not the relative perspective of the strict dichotomy between Man and Nature form historically? There are many ways in which Man understands himself and his environment, and two things are at issue here: undifferentiated Man and Nature, and undifferentiated Nature and Morality. 1) Correlation of Man and Nature: Nature is understood as an extension of Man, and there is no fundamental differentiation between Nature and Man. Zhu Xi’s thinking through qi advocates that Man obtains life from the reservoir of qi, Man’s life is preserved through qi and, ultimately, Man returns to qi. >It (qi) is the master, and I am a guest<. Qi’s the result of pluralistic, multi-level dualism, and as such, Man is not an exception in this framework. >Nature is within Man, and Man is within Nature.< 2) Furthermore, thinking through qi claims that Man is provided with the ability to do good as prepared by Nature and with the Way to realize it. In other words, morality is considered to be the verification of Nature and its achievement. Differentiation of fact and >oughtness< is an unconscious practice of reading Morality as resistance against, or conquering the natural tendency of, self-centeredness. Ancient sages prior to modern individualism agreed with such thought. In the case of Asia, this is precisely why Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism define the Way of Man as the discovery of Nature and its realization. If Morality emerges from within Nature, then it is natural for Zhu Xi to understand li as the principle of things as well as the Moral ideal. Of course, self-reflection and pilgrimage of the Way must be experienced in order to obtain agreement. Erich Fromm’s social psychological findings support Zhu Xi’s thought. Man’s instincts are not limited to animal impulses, but rather, they are sympathetic and self-sacrificing. Man’s happiness depends on the realization of this >human nature<.
