N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Graham Colin Swift is regarded as one of the most outstanding writers in Britain. As the winner of Booker Prize in 1996, his works are based on the national history, social culture and natural geography of England, and he applies multiple narrative strategies which combine characterization, social background and historical events skillfully. In each of his literary works, Swift concentrates on describing and clarifying the ethical dilemma which is confronted by the protagonist who is interwoven in historical, political, cultural and economic factors. Swift has been focusing on the social problems in his literary creation for more than 40 years, and he has realized that the problems in interpersonal ethics are one of the main reasons for the intensification of social conflicts in England. Through the research, we can conclude that family, neighbor and gender constitute three levels of the ethical conflicts in Swift’s fictions. Through keen observation, Swift discerns the crux of the interpersonal ethics crisis in western society nowadays, which is the absence of love. According to the theory of Erich Fromm’s humanistic philosophy, Feuerbach’s humanistic thought, and Marx’s and Engels’ discourses on family, this thesis lucubrates on the interpersonal ethics in Swift’s literary works, and focuses on exploring and explaining the interpersonal ethical view which represents in his fictions. In addition to the Introduction, this thesis is composed of four chapters. The first chapter focuses on The Sweet-Shop Owner and Tomorrow, which reveals the abnormal ethical images of British families, such as generation gap, patriarchy, sibling mutilations and domestic violence. The second chapter focuses on Shuttlecock and Here We Are, which uncovers the strange ethical phenomena of neighbors in four aspects, such as exploited and betrayal friendship, tense teacher-student relationship, unjust superior-subordinate relationship and ruthless doctor-patient relationship. The third chapter focuses on >Waterland< and >Wish You Were Here<, which exposes the ethical chaos of the sexual relationship, such as loveless marriage, extramarital affairs, incest and commercial sex. The fourth chapter focuses on >The Light of Day< and [the short story] >Gabor<, which represents the writer’s reflection on interpersonal relationships and the exploration of achieving ethical harmony. Swift concerns himself with interpersonal ethics and sets >love thought< in all his fictions, even though consumerism has been long widespread and interpersonal relations are cold and alienated. Swift’s works reflect the universality of ethical issues which exist between families, neighbors and genders. Generation gap and patriarchy are common in the family. Sibling estranged and harmed mutually, and domestic violence also happen frequently. The neighbor relations in the commodity society are composed by betrayal and treachery friendship, unfair and injustice superior-subordinate relationship, non-communicated tea¬cher-student relationship and ruthless doctor-patient relationship. There are discordant couples in typical loveless marriages in capitalist society, not only immoral extramarital affair, but also tragedy of incest that breaks through ethical taboos. With the emergence of liberal feminism and sexual liberation movement, female’s flesh is commercialized for trading under the influence of consumerism. All the ethical problems which make people puzzled are caused by the absence and alienation of >love<. Except demonstrating the >loveless< interpersonal relationships, several positive models are present in Swift’s fictions, too. At the same time, Swift makes moral reflection on the problem of interpersonal relationship, and actively explores the feasibility of reconstructing benign interpersonal relationship in his works. Interpersonal ethical thought is the creation core of Graham Swift’s literary works. As a contemporary British writer, he undertakes the moral responsibility and historical mission. He not only exposes the interpersonal ethical problems, but also presents the diversified ethical choice, and his ultimate purpose is to explore how love constructs a harmonious interpersonal ethical order. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Jerome David Salinger(1919–2010)is a highly influential writer in post-World War II America, and his writings and philosophies greatly influenced American literature and society. Published in 1953, >Nine Stories< is Salinger’s sole compilation of short stories. Each story was released around the same time as >The Catcher in the Rye<, showcasing Salinger’s peak of creativity. In >Nine Stories<, Salinger portrays the post-World War II loneliness experienced by individuals, which reflects Salinger’s contemplation on the human psyche, giving >Nine Stories< a distinctive significance. However, a limited amount of research has been done by domestic scholars on >Nine Stories<. Most concentrate on analyzing one specific story rather than conducting comprehensive studies. Current research primarily centers on character alienation and mental trauma, with a minimal exploration of the theme of loneliness among the protagonists. This gap leaves room for further examination in this thesis. This thesis primarily examines the writing of loneliness depicted in >Nine Stories< in the following three aspects through the lens of Fromm and Rollo May’s loneliness theory, Fromm’s theory of love, and Zen Buddhism. Through his portrayal of the pervasive loneliness, Salinger explores how the characters in the stories confront loneliness and ultimately come to terms with and embrace it. The first chapter delves into the ubiquity of loneliness. Firstly, some characters face barriers in connecting with others due to a lack of empathy, resulting in >mirror contact< and silence in communication, ultimately leading to a sense of mental loneliness. Secondly, the sour love, alienated kinship, and insincere friendship also contribute to emotional loneliness among the characters. Lastly, feelings of >existential loneliness< arise from a lack of personal security, blurred identities, and a perception of life’s nothingness. Through exploring the roots and manifestations of loneliness, this chapter posits that loneliness permeates the stories. The second chapter examines the protagonists’ struggle with loneliness through self-abandonment. Initially, they adopt a >formulaic< and >radar-type< persona to assimilate themselves to combat loneliness. Subse¬quently, they confront loneliness by distorting themselves by forming masochistic dependencies on others and achieving sadistic associations with others. Ultimately, they dissolve their preoccupation with loneliness through self-paralysis and self-destruction, attempting to fight loneliness in this way. The chapter concludes that sacrificing one’s identity to combat loneliness ultimately leads to increased misery and loneliness, suggesting that this approach is short-lived and ineffective. In the third chapter, unlike some protagonists, who fight loneliness with >self-abandonment<, others coexist with loneliness through sincere love and self-improvement. On the one hand, people correctly understand loneliness by caring for and understanding each other, diluting the feeling of loneliness through mutual respect and tolerance, and giving themselves and others the courage to accept loneliness through the power of love and sincerity. On the other hand, people coexist with loneliness by accepting their true selves and contemplating loneliness from a Zen perspective. By arguing that coexistence with loneliness ends in empowering, this chapter argues that embracing love and accepting one’s true self can reconcile with loneliness and no longer be distracted by loneliness. Through the analysis of the preceding chapters, this thesis concludes that Salinger’s portrayal of loneliness in >Nine Stories< vividly illustrates the predicament of the characters and their ongoing struggle against loneliness. Furthermore, it suggests that the most effective approach to overcoming loneliness is embracing and coming to terms with it through genuine love. >Nine Stories< mirrors Salinger’s personal experiences with loneliness and serves as a commentary on the spiritual crisis in reality. It urges readers to address their loneliness constructively. Salinger’s contemplation on loneliness imbues >Nine Stories< with depth and offers potential solutions for those grappling with loneliness. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] John Updike (1932–2009) one of the most famous contemporary American realist writers, was born in Pennsylvania, USA, and graduated from Harvard University. Updike began his writing career in 1958. During his writing career, Updike was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes and two O. Henry Prizes, and he achie¬ved outstanding accomplishments in the field of literary creation. Updike’s literary works are concerned with the fate of people from all classes, especially the ordinary people. Updike believes that the situation of the ordinary people is a reflection of social reality. >The Centaur< is a novel with an ordinary individual as the protagonist. >The Centaur< is Updike’s third work. It was published in 1963 and won the American National Book Award. The novel mainly portrays the protagonist George Caldwell’s process of struggling with life’s dilemma. In The Centaur, Caldwell faces a dilemma of both material and spirit. However, Caldwell does not despair but works hard to change himself, and successfully overcomes alienation. The title of the novel >The Centaur< is a tribute to Caldwell by Updike. Updike uses the story that Centaur sacrifices himself in Greek mythology as a metaphor, and regards the ordinary people who overcome difficulties in modern society as heroes. This thesis is divided into five parts. The introduction provides an overview of John Updike’s life, domestic and foreign research status of >The Centaur< and the theory of alienation. Chapter one interprets the alienation behavior of the protagonist Caldwell in the novel >The Centaur<. Facing the reality that he is powerless to change, Caldwell suppresses his pain, which leads him to a somatization disorder and also causes him to escape reality through fantasy. In addition, Caldwell is anxious about his value as a father and as a husband. As a teacher, Caldwell is negative to students, indifferent to colleagues and he is fearful of the principal’s authority. He is unable to handle difficult situations that arise at work. Chapter two elaborates the causes of Caldwell’s alienation based on Fromm’s alienation theory. The Caldwell’s self-alienation is embodied by his sense of powerlessness, which comes from his loss of identity. In the family relationship, Caldwell’s alienation is manifested as his anxieties about his own value resulting from his negligence of productive love. In social relations, Caldwell’s alienation is the embodied by his loss of rationality, which is caused by his confusion about the frame of devotion and orientation. Chapter three explains Caldwell’s methods to overcome alienation. In the process of struggling against alienation, Caldwell gradually discovers his own strength and learns to accept support of others. By assuming social responsibility and facing reality, he reconstructs a sense of identity. By changing his way of interacting with others, Caldwell no longer feels anxious about materialistic values. He finds his own worth and fills the emptiness within himself. Finally, this thesis draws a conclusion that Caldwell successfully overcomes alienation by reconstructing his identity cognition, improving his relationship with others and finding the meaning of existence. Caldwell’s struggles against alienation are of reference significance to modern people’s struggle against alienation. By establishing the values and actively using rational and productive love, modern people can effectively overcome alienation. In a paradigmatic shift from the Freudian conflict model, tension reduction and tension enhancement dynamics are re-conceptualized as valences toward the processes of tension reduction and tension enhancement, rather than toward the respective states of reduced tension or enhanced tension. We posit a unitary direction-independent foundational id drive toward tension level change which incorporates tension reduction and enhancement. As the primary drive circumscribed to manipulations of id tension level, the dynamics of Delta are distinguished from those of Eros and Thanatos whose purviews are in the domain of drive purpose/function (or evolutionary design) and also differentiated from the subjective phenomenological experience of drive expression which varies among people. Theoretical and clinical issues in sexuality and aggression are critically analyzed as entailing libidinal elements of tension enhancement and reduction. Key points are annotated with illustrative clinical vignettes. The intersections between Delta dynamics, ego psychology, and object relations are explored. Possible elaborations of sub-drive development entailing functional autonomy are outlined. N2 - The aim of this paper is to theoretically analyze love relationships as a form of social relations through Erving Goffman’s theory of dramaturgy and Erich Fromm’s critical theory. Modern love relationships are based on pre-socially set rules and norms that affect an individual's understanding of what love is and how to achieve it. The paper looks at the historical research of the concept of love, points out the influence of society on the individual, especially in the context of understanding sexuality and in determining the desirable characteristics of a partner. Furthermore, taking the theoretical frameworks of Erving Goffman and Erich Fromm provides a more detailed insight into contemporary love relationships, and the synthesis of their setting theories provides a further framework for studying impression management in love relationships. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Erich Fromm is a famous 20th century humanist and psychoanalyst. He creatively established the humanis¬tic psychoanalysis. Fromm is deeply concerned about the alienated people in the real world, continually focusing on their mental health issues. In addition, he is committed to exploring approaches to help modern people escape from the predicament of survival, and devoting his life to the cause of human liberation. This thesis mainly discusses Fromm’s thought of sound personality, sorts out and summarizes the content of sound personality thought scattered in Fromm’s works, forms a systematic study. The thesis combines the requirements of China in the new era for the sound development of young people’s personality to explore the contemporary value of Fromm’s thought. This research mainly consists of four chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly discusses the background and significance of studying Fromm’s thought of sound personality. The second chapter is the theoretical source of Fromm’s sound personality thought, mainly introducing the background, theoretical origins, and the theoretical basis of the thought. The third chapter is the basic content of Fromm’s thought of healthy personality, mainly introducing the definition, characteristics and path of healthy personality. The third chapter is the basic content of Fromm’s sound personality thought, narrating from four aspects: the definition, characteristics, training path and the evaluation of the thought. The fourth chapter is the en¬lightenment of Fromm’s sound personality thought to the cultivation of healthy personality of young people in the new era. In this chapter, the author summarizes and discusses the characteristics of sound perso¬nality of young people in the new era from General Secretary Xi Jinping’s lecture to young people, and points out the rationality of studying Fromm’s sound personality thought in the new era. Combining with the characteristics of sound personality discussed above, the author argues that the culti¬vation of healthy personality in the new era requires the pursuit of positive freedom, the cultivation of productive oriented personality, the pursuit of a life-style of paying attention to survival, and the cultivation of the ability of creative love. Although Fromm’s thought of sound personality is a product of the capitalist society in the 20th century, it has theoretical significance and practical value for cultivating healthy youth, forming a positive social mentality and building a socialist harmonious society in China in the new era. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Love plays an important role in our daily lives, and an in-depth study of this theme can help us strengthen the bonds between people and enhance the civilization of society. As one of the representative figures of Western Marxism, Fromm believes that we should understand love from a humanitarian tradition. Fromm lived in a capitalist society with rapidly expanding material wealth. Accompanied by two world wars and an economic crisis, Fromm believes that people are in a state of alienated existence, in which man regards material possessions as the whole of his life and is alienated from himself, his fellow man, and nature. Through the observation and analysis of the current social situation, Fromm thinks about the alienation of human existence in three dimensions: the alienation of freedom, the alienation of love, and the alienation of existence. Based on Marx’s reflection on the human beings and Freud’s psychoanalytic approach, Fromm formed his theory about humanitarian love. Fromm believed that human beings have a fundamental spiritual need to long for union with others and thus escape loneliness and anxiety. It is precisely because modern Western society is unable to solve this need that people choose to escape from it in ways such as mechanized convergence and consumerism. As a kind of union based on maintaining their own independence, love can solve this spiritual need of human beings, so that people can get rid of the survival of the alienation of the predicament, to realize the liberation of human beings. In Fromm’s view, the essence of love is a dynamic creative activity, which includes both giving and creating. In addition to this, love also includes such essential elements as responsibility and respect. Fromm’s humanitarian love clarifies the true meaning of love, enabling people to reflect on the misconceptions of love and their own circumstances, so as to obtain a free and harmonious state of existence. Despite the limitations of this theory, it still has a certain reference value and usefulness for today’s world. N2 - At the center of this research is the representation of patriarchy through the image of a father figure in the novels of Vjenceslav Novak. In the Croatian literature of the 19th century, Novak stands out for his objective portrayal of all social strata, including his portrayal of the patriarchal social order. At the very beginning of this research, the terms >patriarchy< and >father figure< were defined, which must be understood for further reading and understanding of the work. The central part of the paper deals with the representation of patriarchy as a realistic theme in the construction of the father figure in Novak's novel Posljednji Stipančići (1899), so that, with the help of professional literature, the features of patriarchy in the relationship between father and son and in the relationship between father and daughter were analyzed in detail. During theanalysis of the aforementioned relationships, the daughter Lucija Stipančić will stand out the most, since her character represents the bearer of social changes. Furthermore, the paper deals with the representation of depatriarchalization due to absence of father figure in Novak's novel Pavao Šegota (1888), which takes place at the level of the characterization of the subject, the main character, whose characterization is affected by this absence. In the aforementioned chapter, due to the absence of a father figure, the emphasis will be on the relationship between the main character Pavao Šegota and his two sisters. At the very end, it will be concluded that in two of Novak's novels the features of patriarchy are very present, but that in the second mentioned novel there is a deviation from the default of patriarchal norms in the construction of the protagonist. This article focuses on one specific and limited clinical phenomenon: the >adoption< by a few people in Germany of a Jewish identity that is not present in their own biography. An introduction to the phenomenon from clinical practice is followed by a brief historical and social contextualization, as well as theoretical models of explanation for the adoption of a potentially oppressed minority status. With reference to theories on social trauma and its transgenerational transmission to both victims and perpetrators, the psychoanalytic examination of a single case is used to develop the thesis that posttraumatic Jewish identity confusion and constructions are to be understood not only as an individual variant of >false-self,< but also as a form of transgenerational repercussion of the social trauma of the Shoah. It may be some origin, or some coincidence, it is deepened and expanded in the literary world of modern Chinese writers by the strong consciousness of >feeling the times and worrying about the country<: the ethical norms of a nation on sexual issues are also the standard for measuring the quality of the personality and culture of this nation. Perhaps, from this perspective, reflecting on Chinese culture, which is soaked in the seepage of etiquette, can penetrate into the texture and hit the key points. Because >etiquette originates from dusk< (>Book of Rites<), >the way of a gentleman begins with husband and wife< (>The Doctrine of the Mean<). Perhaps, it is precisely because of this that Lu Xun so meticulously depicted the abnormal psychology of Ah Q and Gore; Yu Dafu and Mao Dun repeatedly presented a group of men and women who were almost bohemian; and Ba Jin more frankly advocated writing about >private life< and >love affairs<. For 8 years now, they have expressed puzzlement that his followers support him >despite everything< – despite his incendiary rhetoric, his misogyny, his racial prejudices, and his authoritarianism. In this paper, I argue that, in fact, Trump’s hectic agitation is precisely what his base wants. My reading of the data – including data I gathered with my collaborator, Eric Hanley, in 2016 – is that Trump owes his demagogic success to the fact that he says what his followers want him to say and acts accordingly. Donald Trump, today’s agitator par excellence, supplies what his base demands. Trump, in short, is less an architect of Trumpism than its reflex. However effectively he performs in the public arena, he remains an emissary, personifying a social movement that preceded him and will survive him. And that movement, I will argue, is authoritarian in a very specific sense – driven by a wish for a domineering leader who is loyal to his partisans and hostile to their adversaries. Yet, when we bring these Critical Theorists’ works together, a rich discussion of love emerges. Love is viewed by both as a dialectical force, bringing two subjects into union while also allowing them to cultivate their individual selves. Fromm and Adorno operate within the same Marxist philosophical tradition, meaning that they share concerns about the increasing commodification of love and the disappearance of genuine, spontaneous relationships between people. The similarities are not endless, however, and important differences between them remain: Fromm, with his optimism and his concern for existential issues, maintains a belief in revolutionary political change and high spiritual ideals that the materialist pessimist Adorno resists as comfortable illusions. Through this philosophical encounter, two faces of Critical Theory emerge, one oriented toward an analysis of the present and the other turned toward hopes for the future. N2 - In this study, the modernity criticism of Erich Fromm who is one of the important social scientists of the 20th century, is discussed. Fromm witnessed the before and after of the World War I and II which affected the world deeply, he lived during the war and saw the most effected centers of these wars. Fromm, who holds an important place within the tradition of critical thinking, analyzes the modern society from a different and unique perspective. He thinks that the birth of modernity comes from the liberation of the western man from the monopoly of the despot church. He believes that the humanity has fallen into the embrace of modernity, which contains the worst conditions of all times on the way from the monopoly of the church to freedom, He sees modernity as a set of systems that eliminate human characteristics one by one. According to Fromm, modernity successfully transforms people into the way they want it to be, and the established modernity system operates in such an amazing way that there is no power to stop it. He believes that in the societies where modernity has started to dominate, there will be (and there is) no regard to see the wrongs of this wheel because everyone knows it. Mechanization, dedifferentiation, inclination to lifelessness, inability to make decisions, lack of communication, consumerism, etc. are among the top subjects that Fromm criticizes within the scope of modernity. Indeed, the ancient Greeks thought it impossible to conceive of political life without insight into the human soul. Yet insufficient professional legitimization attaches to the central importance of modern depth psychology in understanding politics. Cultural Foundations of Political Psychology explores the linkages between psychology and politics, focusing on how rival conceptions of the good life and unspoken moral purposes in the social sciences have led to sectarian intolerance. Roazen has always approached the history of psychoanalysis with the conviction that ethical issues are implicit in every clinical encounter. Thus, his opening chapter on Erich Fromm's exclusion from the International Psychoanalytic Association touches on a host of political matters, including collaboration as opposed to resistance to Nazi tyranny. Roazen also brings a public/private perspective to such well-known episodes as the Hiss/Chambers case, the circumstances of Virginia Woolf's madness and suicide, and the matter of CIA funding of the monthly Encounter. He deals with the reaction to psychoanalysis on the part of three major philosophers – Althusser, Wittgenstein, and Buber – and looks at the link between psychology and politics in the work of such political theorists as Machiavelli, Rousseau, Burke, Tocqueville, Berlin, and Arendt. A chapter grappling with Vietnam and the Cold War illustrates how political psychology should be concerned with questions of an ethical or >ought< character. In examining the social and psychological bases for political theorizing, Roazen shows how both psychology and politics must change and redefine their methodologies as a result of their interaction. Roazen concludes with a chapter on how political psychology must deal with issues posed by changing conceptions of femininity. This volume is a pioneering exploration of the intersection of psychology and politics. Y1 - 2003 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Saari, Joose T1 - Ihmishylky, paheitten kokoelma. N2 - Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan japanilaiskirjailija Osamu Dazain (1909–1948) teosta >Ei enää ihminen< (Ningen Shikkaku >人間失格< 1948) yhteiskunnallisen ulkopuolisuuden ja ihmisyyden tuskan näkökulmista. Analyysi keskittyy erityisesti teoksen päähenkilöön, Yozo Obaan, jonka kautta tutkitaan, mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat yksilön ulkopuolisuuden kokemuk-seen osana yhteiskuntaa sekä minkälaisia keinoja yksilö käyttää vastatakseen ulkopuolisuudesta aiheutuvaan tuskaan. Tutkielman teoreettisena viitekehyksenä toimii Erich Frommin (1962) teoria paon mekanis-meista. N2 - In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many Italians emigrated to South America, especially to Argentina and Brazil, in search of a better life than the one they were living in a country tormented by social and economic unrest. Later, with the advent of a political situation in Argentina strongly marked by instability, especially with the coup d’état that sanctioned the rise to power of General Videla in 1976, those who could boast even distant ties of kinship in Italy chose that destination instead to continue to build their lives. Among these were several who had been trained in psychoanalysis in Argentina. Once they started working in Italy, they necessarily passed on their training background influenced by a psychoanalysis that, in Argentina, had already started to think in terms of “field” and begun to be applied to groups and institutions. N2 - The discourse around digitalisation has become detached from the lived reality of the world of work. This discourse is dominated by vague, nebulous promises about new models of work on the one hand and dire warnings of a mass replacement of human labour on the other. Drawing on the work of Erich Fromm, we argue that this creates a risk of regression, as people turn to ‘traditional’ authority figures or a fatalistic solutionism that places unconditional faith in technology. We instead ropose an alternative approach rooted in people’s actual experiences that looks for ways that digital technology can be used to support and augment, rather than replace, human labour. N2 - Meeting with existing society condition during global crisis, compels us to recognize how complex network of interdependent, primarily political and economic circumstances, creates multiple pressures on individual human existence. Having existing prominent processes of our time, social solidarity has born obvious changes, which is largely a clear reflection of social events. Surely, the question of solidarity and trust are essential elements that contribute to the creation of social security, but today’s global crisis of society make the social security more questionable. Civil society depends on the spirit of generalized trust and confidence in others (A. Seligman), and trust itself and security are important needs in the world the quality of each man, especially basic trust that Giddens talked about, as the central element in a complex network of relationships in general society. This study applies the Social Identity Theory (SIT) by Trepte & Loy (2017) and Fromm’s theory of alienation (in Nadhiroh, 2015) to analyze how Yozo’s experiences influence his social identity development and how it affects his actions throughout his life. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach and a close- reading method to collect and analyze the data. The primary data is the English translation of the novel by Donald Keene (1958), and secondary data is collected from journals, articles, and books related to SIT and the theory of alienation. The analysis of Yozo Oba using the principles of Social Categorization, Social Identity, and Self-Esteem from SIT, and the concept of alienation from oneself, alienation from others, and alienation from society shows that Yozo Oba developed a dissatisfying social identity which affected his experience and behaviors, and led him to feel alienation from himself, others, and the society.
