It highlights the clinician’s temptation to >other< survivors by pathologizing cult membership. Erich Fromm’s cultural and psychoanalytic observations can be helpful in our understanding of these dynamics. The discussion comments on Shaw’s conception of the role of shame at various points in the cult member’s experience. It also outlines how the emotion of shame can vary in its impact, depending on the other feelings that are simultaneously present. Finally, the discussion suggests some clinical applications of our understanding of the role of shame as we participate in the cult survivor’s recovery. In many cases, such movements have recruited Christian traditions, ideas, and symbols into their nativist agenda. Nevertheless, the aspects of Christianity that have been functionalised have been primarily the ‘exterior’ of religion, wherein the humanistic core have all been neglected. On the basis of the Erich Fromm's understanding of the world religions' humanistic core, and informed by the Frankfurt School, I demonstrate the hollowness of the right-wing movements adoption of religion, and argue for a new form of humanistic-religious ecumenicism on the basis of the shared values, principles, and ideals that rest at the heart of religion and humanistic philosophy. [application of Fromm's theories to art] N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Ray Bradbury’s >Fahrenheit 451< depicts a world where books are burned and thoughts and freedom are oppressed. Erich Fromm’s socio-psychological theory of freedom is applied to elucidate the psychological coping mechanisms adopted by characters in the novel under adverse circumstances, and explain behaviors of characters under different psychological coping mechanisms. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on reasons for characters’ psychological coping mechanisms: The fictional future world in >Fahrenheit 451< reflects a side of American society in the 1950 s. Ray Bradbury provides a detailed portrayal of the society’s pathological culture and values, among which consumerism, instrumental reason, and hedonism trigger and deepen negative emotions including inferiority, individual insignificance, and powerlessness. To survive, characters give up rational thinking to assimilate into unfavorable social forces, which is a manifestation of negative freedom. The second chapter analyzes characters’ three escape mechanisms caused by negative freedom, namely authoritarianism, destructiveness, and automation conformity, which are the psychological reasons underlying characters’ absurd behaviors and the propensity for violence and self-destruction. The third chapter explicates the fact that the key to Montag’s character growth lies in his transformation from negative freedom to positive freedom. In this process, three capacities are cultivated: the capacity for active involvement and personal experience, the capacity for reason and rational faith, and the capacity for love, which enables him to realize creativity on the sensual, intellectual, and emotional level, and complete the transformation from nonproductive to productive orientation. By dissecting psychological coping mechanisms of characters in the novel, the thesis concludes that characters’ behaviors reflect two psychological coping mechanisms, namely negative freedom centering around the escape mechanisms, and positive freedom centering around creativity. For individuals struggling in adverse circumstances, a productive orientation with the capacity for active involvement and personal experience, the capacity for reason and rational faith, and the capacity for love is the hope of individual growth and human civilization. [repositorio.ul.pt/handle/10451/45283] N2 - >Why is there not an adequate and efficient answer to climate change?< is a question that has been haunting millions of people around the world for the last decades, and that is growingly being made by all publics. Despite the scientific consensus on climate change, the necessary measures to deter this phenomenon are still far from the speed and range necessary to effectively address it (when there are any measures at all). Metanarratives are the grand histories that humankind tells itself to guide its practices and actions. They either work towards solving this civilisational crisis or to stop any effective solutions. The current metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism is one of the main obstacles to stopping the climate crisis, but there is a conflict of metanarratives in the world today, and new possibilities are coming into existence. Potential future metanarratives for a different climate will either be survival of the fittest or civilising tools when human civilisation is in its most dangerous moment. The current metanarrative underpins capitalist dominance and is perpetuated through capitalist ideology and hegemony, locking humanity into a path of irreversible climate change. The unavoidable systematic change needed to effectively tackle climate change will go as deep as the social construction of what >human nature< is and what relations humans have to each other and the environment. Through an adaptation of Michael Burawoy’s extended case method a methodology has been developed to evaluate the appearance of a new climate change metanarrative articulated with social justice, a climate justice potential metanarrative. A historical study on the evolution of public policy and climate policy in particular for three countries in the western mediterranean - Portugal, Spain and Morocco - was conducted. A revision of information about each of the countries, focusing on the evolution of climate and future scenarios, as well as social, economical, political and industrial tendencies, was done. There were 1107 interviews conducted for this thesis, 46 of which were face-to-face and structured. A methodological tool was developed to quantify the difference between really existing climate policy and climate action that would achieve the affirmed goals of stopping climate collapse on the three countries. Over the course of three years post-Paris Agreement enquiries were conducted in Portugal (in the ClimAdaPT.local project), in Spain and Morocco, focusing on national and local politicians, academia, social movements and private enterprises. From believing into climate change until supporting effective climate policies, there is a long path where world views, political affiliation and ideology, cultural values, perception of risks, experiencing climate change, notions of international and social justice, attribution of responsibilities and public participation play a very important role. The inquiries revealed that many personal and collective blocks are determinant in the path into reaching policies that effectively respond to the climate crisis, and that shifting world views and experiences that affect this path will be tested in the coming years. This is a qualitative expression of the current metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism and the political clashes of the present moment open the door to new metanarratives, including a potential metanarrative of climate justice. Together with other researchers ‘climate policy gap’ graphics were developed for Portugal, Spain and Morocco to help reveal this divide and quantify the under-reaction between diagnosis and action, through layers of political indecision, miscommunication, insufficient action and the power of the fossil fuels industries. The climate policy gaps for the three nations revealed overshoots on even the most ambitious levels of emissions reductions pledged when compared to trajectories compatible with 1.5ºC or 2ºC limits. This research suggests that there is a built-in feature of under-reaction in climate policy, which staves off any emission pathways compatible with stopping a temperature rise above 1.5ºC by 2100. The climate policy gap is a political and methodological tool that reveals systemic shortcomings of climate action, its visibility identifies benchmarks and sectors that should be activated to close these gaps in response to the growing popular demands for climate justice and it quantifies the gap between a metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism and what is necessary to prevent reaching even the Paris Agreement’s targets. 2018 and 2019 saw the emergence of a much stronger climate justice movement. The three most relevant components of this movement - Blockadia, Youth Climate Strikes (Fridays for Future) and Extinction Rebellion - have combined efforts in a global call for civil disobedience and insurgency on political lines that respond to the climate sci ence that calls for a 50% greenhouse gas global cuts by 2030. They have put in the for paigns such as Climate Jobs are creating political programs for a social revolution in line with German Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin’s idea of revolution as the emergency break when history moves in a catastrophic direction. An early critic of the dangers posed by the threats of progress and technological development led by capitalism, Benjamin proposed an alternative view of revolution: it is not inevitable or a natural result of the contradiction between productive forces and productive relations, but rather an interruption of an historical evolution that is leading to catastrophe. These movements and programs are not enough for the emergence of a new climate justice potential metanarrative, although they are necessary conditions for it. In conclusion, there are signs of the emergence of a climate justice potential metanarrative, with a push for the creation of new institutions, adaptation of old ones, public perception of the dimension of the problem of climate change and effective legislative response to it. Some of the most expressive characteristics of this potential metanarrative were outlined: a human awakening full of impetus for social reordering; a redistribution of power, wellbeing and cooperation; a new notion of prosperity inside natural limits and just resource redistribution; reconnection of knowledges and sciences; the need for a public and participatory science to address human’s and earth’s needs; the teleology of humanity’s collective survival; understanding and respecting life system’s cycles, favouring life’s diversity as an efficient tool against the current increase in entropy in the ecosphere; acknowledging and integrating the care economy into daily life, with the corresponsibilization of men and women for care and maintenance activities; recovering indigenous people’s knowledge of biomimicry as a collective tool, promoting human beneficial effects on life cycles and ecosystems; understanding capitalist production’s incompatibility with basic life system’s principles. A new potential metanarrative for climate change is a historical novelty, but only such a novel Grand History can give humanity a chance to overcome the biggest threat it has ever faced. [ecommons.luc.edu/luc_diss/4008] N2 - Alienation is a sociological term that has found itself severely out of favor as an analytical concept due to what are perceived as inextricable theoretical shortcomings despite having once enjoyed a time when it was taken to be essential for a robust and critical analysis of society. This dissertation looks to contribute to a revitalization of alienation theory by offering an understanding of alienation that is grounded in the framework of social ontology as forwarded in the works of John Searle. This social ontological account conceives of alienation as a fallout fact that arises when there is a performative contradiction between the enactment of a deontic power and the collective recognition of the status function that made possible that self-same deontic power in the first place. Framing alienation in this way provides the means for resolving those central aporias that have otherwise stymied its more widespread usage, namely, the question of alienation theory’s fundamental unity, the division between objective and subjective approaches, and the term’s normative status. The second half of the project is then dedicated to a critical engagement between the social ontological account and the long and diverse history of alienation theory beginning with its pre-philosophical uses and continuing into its philosophical appropriation in the 19th Century, its golden era in the mid-20th Century, and finally its place in second- and third-wave Critical Theory. This dissertation is focused on the stories of veteran public elementary school teachers in rural Georgia who continue to teach in spite of the current seemingly hopeless state of education at the local, state and national level. The theoretical framework of this inquiry builds upon a wide array of works such as the work of Freire (1994, 1998) and Fromm (2010) on critical hope, as well as, multiple theorists’ work on versions of hope (West, 2004; Giroux, 2013; Duncan-Andrade, 2009; Lear, 2006); the work on passion for teaching (Palmer, 2007; Nieto, 2003, 2005, 2008; Ayers, 2008; Villerand et al., 2003; Fernet et al., 2014; Phelps & Benson, 2012), as well as, morale in education (Evans, 1997; Mackenzie, 2007). Methodologically, I utilize narrative inquiry (Clandinin, 2013; Clandinin & Connelly, 1988, 2000) to collect teacher stories (Witherell & Noddings, 1991; Cole, 1990; Shubert & Ayers, 1992; He, 2003; Nieto, 2003, 2005) of what keeps veteran teachers in the elementary school classroom despite all of the challenges in education today, and to learn from those seasoned teachers who choose to stay in the classroom about hope and hopelessness in classrooms today. I then created a collage of the stories that I gathered from the participants. Three themes emerged from this inquiry as to why teachers choose to remain in the classroom: (1) participants’ love for their students, (2) participants’ love for learning and (3) participants’ understanding of a >bigger picture< in education. Two themes emerged in regards to what we can learn from teachers who choose to stay in the classroom about hope and hopelessness in classrooms: (1) the importance of positivity and (2) the impact of stress related to teaching. In place of the argument derived from Fromm, and which the author calls Mysticism about Sexual Relations, an alternative is proposed by the author that he calls Romanticism about Sexual Relations: it sees sexual behaviour as a set of expressive gestures symbolising the salient features of a situation on the model of a Romantic view of artworks. In the present article, I am interested in first briefly exploring a theoretical framework of alienation in the writings of Marx, which carries into conceptualizations by Fromm and Laing. This exploration is both for the purpose of cultivating a more specific definition of alienation as well as in an effort to consider broader implications of alienation. Next, I briefly explore these thinkers alongside the role of alienation in the context of work. I then consider the Japanese concept of >hikikomori< as an example of a profoundly debilitating response to recognizing one’s own alienation from the self, largely in response to the modern Japanese workplace. Lastly, I attempt to synthesize thinking around what kind of existence might be possible in >recovery< from alienation, as well as whether such a recovery is even possible in our culture. In a simple, uncluttered style Dr. Anderson presents a string of banalities relieved periodically by bits of misinformation and a >valid theory of behavior< which is really a jumble of other psychiatric writings The book is intended to be free of cultist jargon and suitable for parents and physicians. It also purports to offer a start toward a conceptual integration of psychiatry and religion. The book is free of cultist jargon, although it is doubtful that it would be suitable for parents and physicians. In addition, it fails to integrate psychiatric and religious concepts, and it offers no new theory of behavior. Surprisingly, the quality of writing is excellent. In one chronological sense Beyond Freud does go beyond; for some of the ideas of Freud's successors are included, such as Sullivan, Fromm, Horney, etc. But in the chronological span of Freud's own writings, the book does not go much beyond early Freud. Psychotherapy theories are also used for the interpretation of history. The language and methods developed in psychotherapy have dominated many dimensions of social life: social work, education, advertisement, and public relations. Psychotherapy, especially group psychotherapy, has been employed also in solving social and political conflicts. Annual seminars of The Israeli-Polish Mental Health Association included small group meetings of Israeli, Polish, and German mental health professionals. Using theory and methods of psychodynamic psychotherapy, the Association took on the task of working through the burden of the tragedy of Holocaust consequences, which is a goal declared in its statutes. Referring to our own experience in the statutory work of The Israeli-Polish Mental Health Association, we conclude that in spite of a significant impact on the interpersonal level, a change on the social level is invisible. These two utopias are read as representative of a fundamental tension within the writings of Marx: while Morris’s understanding of labor aligns with the early works of Marx, Bellamy’s vision is an expression of later attempts by Marx to distinguish between productive activity performed in the >realm of necessity< and that performed in the >realm of freedom.< This project identifies in Bellamy’s utopia a continued presence of alienated labor and reads this limitation as the inevitable outcome of an attempt to realize Marx’s distinction between necessary and free production; Morris’s ability to eradicate alienated labor in his utopia is thus only possible because he abandons this distinction and recognizes, as did the early Marx, the centrality of all forms of production to the individual’s realization of her creative human essence. However, while Morris overcomes alienation, his attempt to break with the material foundations of capitalism leaves his utopia unsustainable; this project therefore looks to Bellamy’s economic structures in an attempt to imagine how Morris’s labor philosophy might be infused with Bellamy’s structural elements to create a socialist future which would grow from the material conditions of capitalism while fully separating itself from the alienation of capitalist labor relations. N2 - Dialogue, like many aspects of life, is not presented as unilateral. In fact, it is composed of different dimensions and dynamisms. Among the multitude of dynamisms, it is noted that there are some that are considered constitutive of a good dynamic dialogue: relationships, listening with full attention and discourse. Talking about relationships, we consider the relationship between two or more different realities, such as relationships among people, affective relationships, etc. Starting from the dynamics of listening and listening, we discover that they are not initially focused on sound. At the beginning of life, no conscious perception of sound is born. At the beginning of the listening session, there is an awareness. Listening is the fundamental element of listening. Hence, listening first directs out of the horizons of sound and calls to look, perceives reality through a face that is an exponent of attitudes, feelings, experiences. These experiences can be pronounced in the dynamics of speech. Speech is a dynamism that shapes the world of emotions, experiences, thoughts, ideas. Talking through words transports what is not just a letter or a sound. Namely, the word represents not the self but the world of the spirit, the emotion, etc. It is directed at the expression and formulation of that world. Assuming that these dynamisms truly become the basis of a good dynamic dialogue, this short article proposes to delineate them by trying to bring out the elements of their impact on personality development. We believe that these dynamisms can explicitly indicate the importance of a good dynamic dialogue and its relationship with the development of the person, who, if open to dynamic dialogue, becomes even more open to innovation and growth. However we actually do lean on Schopenhauer's theory if we try to find an answer to the following: what kind of realisation we could conclude to if the >forever surviving< capitalism is not seen as the description of actors' rationality with the well recognisable natural order and its own pattern, but we see it as a related want to Keynes' and others' animal spirit belief and its product. But is the economic and social reproduction's sometimes problematic but solid continuity explainable if we break up with the economic action's classic and originál – the consumer's needs satisfying-target theory, and the causal and segmental (in other theories: balanced versus imbalanced) motifs' sharp differentiation? In linking of our thoughts we connect to Joseph Vogl's paragraphs in a book he wrote in a similar topic, raising several questions in its logical consequences, if – as opposed to Polányi's paradigm – we see not the social institute system but the often hardly identifiable and even more vital >capitalist spirit< as the first >spring< in case of shaping the social-economic models. I argue for its inclusion in the curriculum but, more specifically, for its use as part of intervention programmes that allow young people to discuss a range of emotional and mental health difficulties in a safe space. Chapter One introduces the central research questions and methodology. Chapter Two provides an overview of the relationship between >Realism< and >realistic fiction< so that the work is situated within Literary Studies. Acknowledging that ‘reality’ in fiction can only be represented within the conventions of narrative structure, the thesis provides a definition of YA realism: it is an artistic representation of a variety of adolescent experiences that could occur in the real world, a fictionalisation of the feasible. Because certain YA material is treated in ‘realist’ mode, controversies often erupt so some of those issues will be foregrounded here. An overview of the evidence that reading can have a positive impact on well-being is provided in Chapter Three and a discussion about hope and why storytelling matters should help to explain why: YA realism can be a remedy. In Chapter Four, I argue that endings of these books are important and leave the readers of a realm of hope. An analysis of these novels from this standpoint could provide the narrative solution to concerns about certain aspects of YA realism and allay any fears that the books are inappropriate. The chapter offers an analysis of: Melvin Burgess’s >Junk< (1996); Jay Asher’s >Thirteen Reasons Why< (2007); Stephen Chbosky’s >The Perks of Being a Wallflower< (1999) and Angie Thomas’s >The Hate You Give< (2017). Each section explores the authors’ depiction of hope and positivity in the context of the adolescent experiences of sexuality, prejudice, identity, bullying, rejection, suicide, rape and abuse. The final chapter reflects on the writing of my own YA novel, Asterix Clementine, as well as the well-being workshops that I currently deliver to young adults in schools in Wales. This theoretical framework starts from a minority thought, and although it is not the understanding adopted today, it is significantly useful for a broader and deeper understanding of personality disorders that affect a considerable amount of incarcerated. Pondering on the various factors and peculiarities related to the brazilian prison system, this theoretical alternative is relevant for criminological and legal psychology studies, not only to help elucidate the dynamics between pathological personalities and criminal profiling, but also to foster critical thinking about new alternatives and possibilities when dealing with the phenomena of imprisonment and punishment. Erich Fromm (1900-80) is the German psychologist who underscores the significance of individual freedom in his book Escape from Freedom (1941) and maintains that on the path towards freedom, individuals attempt at unshackling themselves from restrictive forces; however, as they release themselves from the restrictions of an authority and refuse to yield to its demands, individuals are left with feelings of insecurity and powerlessness. As a result, they try to compensate for the feeling of insecurity by either submitting themselves to another authority figure or becoming authority figures themselves. Within the paper, Fromm’s concept of freedom is elaborated upon and applied to Ken Kesey’s >One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest< (1962). The paper discusses the two major concepts of >freedom from< and >freedom to< known as >negative freedom< and >positive freedom< and demonstrates the possibility of finding a getaway from a negative sense of freedom by investing mankind with the power of love and communication. Real freedom is not a release from external constraints but mainly a release from internal forces. Best-selling author and life coach Rob Liano explained the practical importance of self-love by noting that >Once you embrace your value, talents, and strengths, it neutralizes when others think less of you.< This quest for self-appreciation, self-understanding, and for mature self-love enhances one’s mental and emotional health while increasing the ability to enrich the lives of others as well.
