More specifically, this study seeks to understand how people living under particular regimes of power – characterised by distinct politics of fear, uncertainty, and silence – feel, define, and express themselves in relation to power, whether in the form of submission or resistance. In other words: How do authoritarian power dynamics affect individuals’ perception of self and how does it play into and shape the everyday life of the individual? At the heart of this inquiry is the notion of the subject, which forms both the conceptual foundation and the central focus of this study.– The study draws primarily on the theoretical contributions of Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, and Hannah Arendt on the interplay of power, resistance, and subjectivity. To frame the discussion, a socio-historical examination of post-independence power practices in Egypt and their impact on the constitution of the political subject is conducted. Research data is generated through an art-inspired qualitative research approach, primarily using Egyptian novels as a source of data to uncover the nuances and interiorities of the process of subject formation. Through a dialogue between Western social theory and Egyptian literature, the study provides an understanding of power practice in Egypt from 1952 to the present, particularly at the level of the inner panorama of the self in society and expands it into a reading of social and political theories on the question of power, subjectivity, resistance, and agency.– The study is divided into six main chapters, including an introduction and a conclusion. Each empirical chapter of this study tells the story of a particular episode in time and is somewhat self-contained, yet all chapters are connected into a large coherent reading of modern Egyptian power practices. Just as the novels examined in this study tell a story with their words, so does my research.– The study concludes that the process of subject formation in Egypt should be understood as an artefact of historical continuity that connects the past to the present, not necessarily in a linear fashion, but in a way that gives it a genealogical context, and as a dynamic process of shifting subject positions. The study further argues for the limitations of the status conception of citizenship as a defining framework for the state – society relationship in the context under study and proposes instead the use of the power – subject framework as a substitute. Last but not least, the study suggests that the connection between theory and method, expressed in the very structure of the research, reveals the epistemic relevance of literature to the conceptual imagination, contributing in a sense, to the discussion of the decolonisation of knowledge production. In some ways, this interdisciplinarity underscores the sheer breadth and hybridity of the concept of subject formation that has become apparent throughout this analysis. However, at the same time he tried to help his clients achieve an attitude that could be called religious in the humanistic sense. In this sense, his psychoanalytic theory has educational implications. This paper explains the structure of Fromm's discussion of religion in his psychoanalytic theory, and presents a critical viewpoint on contemporary Japanese education based on Fromm's theory. To this end, this study focuses on Fromm's theory of religion in his psychoanalytic theory as found in his Psychoanalysis and Religion. First, the paper outlines Fromm's theory of religion, namely, the functional definition of >religion<, >humanistic religion>, and >authoritarian religion<, in comparison with Freud's understanding of religion. Then the paper examines Fromm's idea of the relationship between psychoanalysis and religion, neither irreconcilable nor conciliatory. Second, this paper reviews previous studies discussing and lauding Fromm's ideas of the relationship between psychoanalysis and religion, finding that these studies have already criticized because of their conciliatory stance on the relationship. Subsequently, the paper shows that most Fromm-related studies in education overlook the theory of religion and conciliate his psychoanalytic and religious theories. The paper also addresses a study that does not conciliate the relationship but overlooks the importance of Fromm's theory of religion, focusing only on the logic of Freudian psychoanalytic theory. Third, this paper confirms how Fromm's >revised< psychoanalytic theory grasps the position of >religion< in its theory, and clarifies the point that Fromm regards >religion< as a product of human need springing from human beings' existential dichotomy. Therefore, Fromm's psychoanalysis is a theory that continues to face the problems of >religion< and of how to identify >religion.< Fourth, this paper considers how Fromm's psychoanalytic theory distinguishes the nature of >religion< from the perspective of whether the domain is humanistic or authoritarian. The paper then demonstrates that this distinction is governed by the role of >awareness< in his psychoanalytic process, which Fromm refers to as a search for the truth: a step in the direction of un-deception (de-deception [Ent-täuschung]). Then the paper shows that his psychoanalytic theory is an educational theory that discovers the truth while becoming aware of the unconscious and aims at attaining religious experience. Finally, the paper reveals that discussing Fromm's psychoanalytic theory while focusing on his theory of religion has its own educational implications. First, it employs the work by Gert Biesta to secure a space between critical pedagogy and Deweyan democratic education, from which Fromm’s theory can be discussed. Furthermore, it argues that Biesta’s perspective offers a valuable theoretical ground to extend the emancipatory potential of Deweyan democratic education, while avoiding some pitfalls of critical pedagogy. Subsequently, the paper contrasts Marcuse’s and Fromm’s views on Dewey to show how Fromm’s understanding of Dewey was more effective than that of Marcuse for developing the potential of Dewey’s philosophy. Next, the paper clarifies key similarities and differences between Fromm’s psychoanalysis and Dewey’s pragmatism, as it is applicable specifically to emancipatory education. Finally, the paper argues that despite the differences between these two thinkers, Fromm’s theory further radicalizes Deweyan democratic education by adding new elements to the list of preconditions on the role of the emancipatory teacher. N2 - The subject of this article is the views on the phenomenon of conformism expressed in the works of representatives of the Frankfurt school: Max Horkheimer, Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse and Erich Fromm. The transformation of the interpretation of the phenomenon of conformity in the studied works is traced. Based on the views of the thinkers of the Frankfurt school, some patterns and features of the conformal behavior of the individual are deduced. The author comes to the conclusion that the phenomenon of conformity can be considered as an adaptation of human behavior to the norms, rules and attitudes prevailing in society. Conformism as a form of social behavior can be interconnected with various violations in the system of social order. The ambivalence of conformity is that conformal behavior can lead to both constructive and destructive consequences. At the same time, representatives of the Frankfurt school focus their attention mainly on the destructive side of conformity, giving it a negative assessment, since the conformist behavior of the individual comes mainly from coercion. An individual forced to conformism, not realizing why he agrees with the imposed course of action, adapts to incomprehensible and unacceptable social attitudes for him, turns out to be carrying out destructive activities. Reich uses Marx in his predominately Freudian framework of sexual repression in trying to' address the problem of repression and suppression in Western capitalism. Fromm, on the other hand puts Freud into his already Marxist approach 10 authority, the family, and ideology. Adorno, Marcuse, and Horkheimer largely ignored sexuality in their later writings, but instead used Freudian concepts in their theory of the authoritarian personality. N2 - Buddhism and Psychotherapy focus on alleviating mental suffering through a detailed investigation of mental process. Therefore Buddhism and Psychotherapy overlap each other in the theory and in practice. Historically there are many attempts to collaborate between Buddhism and psychology by a variety of renowned psychoanalysts such as Carl Jung, Erich Fromm, Karen Horney, and Mark Epstein et al. I reviewed Buddhism’s approach to the self which is described as >no-self<. Sense of the self arises from different conditions, there isn’t a permanent and solid self. An expanded understanding of the self based on Buddhism is not contradictory to modern psychology and deepens the therapeutic potential of no-self. In practice, Buddhism and psychotherapy roughly share the similar method in some aspect to approach the inner mind. But the next step to deal with these materials is definitely different. In this article I never attempt to view Buddhism through the term of psychotherapy and to integrate two fields. The earnest introspection and considerate academic attitude are necessary to collaborate between Buddhism and psychotherapy without losing the essence of each other. Central to the discussion are the ways in which classical and contemporary approaches (e.g. Parsons, Elias, Bourdieu) have responded to Freud’s theories concerning the genesis of the superego and its changes in the course of psychic development, to his suppositions concerning anthropology and psychopathology, and to later psychoanalytic extensions of the concept (e.g. Klein, Erikson and Loewald). With reference to Freud’s works of cultural critique, special emphasis is given to conceptions of the superego in studies on authoritarianism, adaptation and morality, notably by the Frankfurt School (Fromm, Horkheimer, Adorno). The authors also discuss the historical changes undergone by the superego concept and examine by way of examples the benefits of concept for achieving a clearer understanding of recent societal trends associated with contemporary phenomena such as digitization and optimization. Among those who influenced Riesman intellectually, there can be little doubt that Erich Fromm played a major role. Although Riesman never accepted Fromm’s pessimistic view and radical approach to modernity in the West, we clearly see the impact of Fromm on Riesman’s ideas about social character, conformity, and especially autonomy. N2 - The subject of research is to analyze non-humanity in a human being. The aforesaid problem has many aspects. Firstly, it is related to religious topics. Religious literature views human as a sinful creature falling into the first sin. Secondly, the topic of ‘non-humanity’ is associated with morals and interpreted as the human susceptibility to evil. Thirdly, the concept of non-humanity in human is the result of gradual disappointment in human as a god’s creature as it was depicted in the medieval literature. This has led to another phenomenon which Nikolay Berdyaev called ‘the impairment of human’. Psychoanalysis started a new stage in the development of this concept. Psychoanalysts introduced the phenomenology of the unconsciousness and the nature of the instincts leading to aggression and destruction. Fromm wrote a special book called >The anatomy of human destructiveness<. Finally, non-humanity becomes the subject of modern trans-humanistic philosophy. Researchers started to question whether it was possible to embed something into human which would allow to change the human nature and create a new human. The author bases his research on such significant methods as the hermeneutic and psychoanalytical analysis of texts allowing to reveal different aspects of non-humanity. The novelty of research is the introduction of the topic which has never been viewed as the subject of independent analysis in Russian sources. The author of the article makes an attempt to trace back the development of the historical and philosophical tradition with reference to this problem. Even though there have been some discussions about Adam’s descendants and some features they may have different from Adam’s nature. However, this topic has never been discussed from the point of history and philosophy. The author of the article describes how this problem has been developing from ancient days till today. The author underlines that without being opposed to non-humanity, humanity can’t fully reveal itself. It attempts to reconstruct the philosophical tradition of affective alterity and to construct its theory. Homosexuality is affective alterity, love between Thou and I. In the article, there are explored the dynamic religions in their openness to the Other with an emphasis on Judaism and the >love the stranger< postulate in the Hebrew Bible, to biblical and rabbinical literature as well as Erich Fromm’s and Julia Kristeva’s psychoanalytic interpretations of them. The idea of hospitality, rooted in the Bible and the Koran, was revived by Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, Griselda Pollock and Geoffrey H. Hartman. It is of urgent importance in Poland where the fundamentalist misogyny and homophobia increase. In the paper, queer rights are examined as human rights, and this is again pertinent to Eastern Europe. The methodology of the intersection of cultural analysis and Jewish studies here are inspired by Ernst van Alphen, Mieke Bal, Christina von Braun and Griselda Pollock. A particular connection between Jewisheness and queerness is stressed by Daniel Boyarin, Ann Pelegrini and Alisa Solomon; as the authors write, it is to be found in today’s Poland in the Shterndlech Iton Babel magazine published by the younger generation. Also, the feminist studies of Maria Janion, Kazimiera Szczuka and Bozena Uminska are of significance here. The authors end with visual culture productions: the queer art exhibition curated by Pawel Leszkowicz in Poznan in 2005 and in Gdansk in 2006. The authors also refer to the polymorphous work of the Lithuanian artists Svajonė and Paulius Stanikai and to the work of loss and memory of the Polish artist Ewa Kuryluk. Throughout the paper, the authors propose their understanding of love. The text whose part is entitled >Faith and Democracy< is a sequel to our Polish-language book >Love and Democracy. In other words, it is the mark which separates its existence from the rest of the group. According to Fromm, the process of individuality begins at infancy level when the child is separated from the mother. This then takes an emotional toll on the child as he suffers from loneliness and anxiety which stem from the prior separation. The child will henceforth acquire his individuality through the process of socialization which requires constant interaction with people in his life. For this paper, we have selected a novel, Faggots, authored by Larry Kramer, to be the main text for our research. This article argues that the characters in the text are conflicted with feelings of anxiety and loneliness as they embark on respective quest to eradicate the feeling of loneliness by looking for a potential life partner. However, these characters go through a series of promiscuous relationships by living an active sexual lifestyle on the ground that they are in search of the >right< one. Therefore, this paper will look into the sadistic and masochistic (sometimes both; otherwise known as sadomasochistic) tendency practiced by the characters in the novel in their quest to reclaim their lost individuality. This research draws in the concept of freedom, sadism, and masochism as proposed by Erich Fromm to further consolidate the findings. One of the practices which can be observed in most societies is the exclusion and rejection of homosexuals of their fundamental rights as humans. As such, the issue will be magnified in this paper through a satirical play written by Larry Kramer, entitled >The Normal Heart<. Parallel with the dominant hegemony, the homosexual characters in the play are mistreated and isolated within their own society. To retaliate, these characters consider themselves as victims and intend to counter the situation by masochism. However, the attempt seems to backfire and reify the preexisting hegemony. As such, this paper explores >The Normal Heart< in light of Antonio Gramsci’s concept of hegemony as well as Erich Fromm’s masochism. To further specify, the paper examines the homosexual characters – their victimization and their fight against the dominant ideologies and how it all leads to their estrangement within the society. Since the sixth century BC, when the human undertook a systematic and critical contemplation upon surrounding reality, she/he has begun to dream about political rulers to be guided in their doings by the imperative of reason. In principal, the higher level of spiritual culture characterized the rulers, the more likely their subjects were to live to a great age in relative peace. That is why for centuries it has been dreamed of a political system that is something like a kind of a sophocracy. The most complete picture of such a sovereign, which fulfilled dreams about a sage in the crown, was outlined by Plato in his State. In his point of view, as long as the lovers of wisdom will not have royal power in the states, or the rulers will not begin to love wisdom honestly, there is no help for states and for the human race. Nevertheless, over the centuries, authority was enforced mainly by physical strength and not by reason. It was not until the twentieth century that democracy brought freedom and equality of rights, thanks to which political power became more rational. Unfortunately, also contemporary liberal democracy is not free from fundamental contradictions that can bring about its collapse. The main contradiction is the increasingly smaller influence of citizens – who in the theory of democracy are the only legal sovereign – on political decision-making. This is accompanied by the enhancing influence of entities with no democratic legitimacy, e.g. global corporations that do not care about the common (public) good, but only about their own. These entities use the growing intellectual and ethical weakness of democratic politicians whose purpose is their own particular interest and not the happiness (good) of their citizens. This may indicate a slow system disintegration. For this reason liberal democracy needs politicians who are wise enough to realize this threat. Of all the people in the history of the world who led political communities, to the Platonic ideal in the highest degree (among others, like T. G. Masaryk and Á. Göncz) got closer the man who, paradoxically, never wanted to be a ruler. Václav Havel's thought is a critique of both Soviet post-totalitarianism and Western democracy. In his opinion both systems, though to a different degree, alienate a human trying to reduce her/him to the role of a machine's cog. Havel proposes that every citizen take individual and global responsibility for herself/himself and the whole world, because only in this way she/he can consciously exert real influence over political decisions. What is more, this is the only way to build a politics that aims – if possible – the happiness of every person. Havel realizes that in today's world this attitude is extremely impractical and very difficult to apply in everyday life. Nevertheless, he knows no better possibility. N2 - The semantic coverage of the health concept is, certainly, not limited only to the pronunciation of the medical terminology. The issue also depends on the massive in media presentation of the sociological-cultural and technological aspects of the terminology. Because the state of being healthy represents a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, rather than a condition in which there is no illness. The definition of >socially< reveals the relation of health with a wide space and it covers everything related to society. The whole topics of this wide frame are the area that was established that of constituent discourse >healthy people> and >healthy society< definitions. Is it possible to talk about the fixed conditions of an optimal healthy life? Is it possible to define a healthy life that may be valid for each term? What are the key determinants and indicators of a healthy society? How do the media content and its rhetoric contribute to or distort the image of a >healthy societyclinical iatrogenesis< to theoretical and technical description of a healthy society? What are the arguments or justifications of the views that assert that the social organism may also become ill? It is valid the same arguments be said for also the medical field? In the light of these questions, a literary screening about a >healthy society< can give us a concrete idea. In this study, general evaluation of problems related to community health will be made Erich Fromm’s >The Sane Society< and Ivan Illich’s >Medical Nemesis< under the guidance of key words of his books. Will focused on a critical reading will be done in the mainstream written and electronic media on the axis of the concept of >fear appeal< of news contents and rhetoric that produced about individual health and healthy society. [ISSN 0137-2475] N2 - The paper is an attempt at shedding light on the issues related to the dystopian vision of postmodern society metonymically represented by Vado, an imaginary city, in the novel >Un incendio invisible< written by Sara Mesa. This abandoned urban space causes us to reflect on crucial topics in postmodern society, such as incorporation into unknown place, redefinition of the concept of parenthood, liquid and perverse love, social inequalities, abandoned elders, consumption, role of shopping malls and their significance, human alienation, all phenomena that we find in the novel. The city of Vado plays symbolic role in that piece, hence its devastation and ruin show a close connection with the consumer society and the actions of Homo consumericus. We base our analysis on the philosophical and sociological postulates of Gilles Lipovetsky, Zygmunt Bauman, Erich Fromm and anthropological one of Marc Augé, as well as on the proposal of how to read a novel by Javier del Prado Biezma in order to describe the nature of all these mentioned problems and expose the criticism of Homo consumericus concealed in the novel. Admitting the primordial kindness of human nature, he criticizes the possibility of a return to the traditional religious order. The complex relationship between psychoanalysis and religion is discussed. There is a lack of position on this issue of S. Freud and C. Jung. Various functions of religion, the problem of healing the soul, ritualism, symbolism and idolatry of modern man are analyzed. Fromm puts the emphasis on psychological subjectivity, suggesting to ignore ontological issues, which limits the possibilities of his approach. Yet the era of Postmodernism taught us mainly the relativism of multitudes of values, standards and paradigms. It made us used to >it all depends< approach. Many popular methods of describing architecture are based on analysing it in a historical or cultural context. This paper, however, proposes a perspective that refers to human needs which have arguably been universal for all the people in all historical periods in all cultures. This perspective could be useful particularly while dealing with big contemporary issues of >commons< in architecture – togetherness, ecology, common places and agendas. This paper proposes a framework based on the school of >positive psychology< and in particular on the unappreciated father of the Frankfurt School and critical theory – Erich Fromm who worked all his life on his comprehensive >theory of needs<. This paper proposes translating the concepts of this theory into architectural analyses and narrative. If we are to understand the essence of >commons<, we need to refer to people’s common needs. These are the key concepts of Fromm’s model. This paper is structured around what Fromm described as three basic, common needs: freedom, creativity and love. The analysis of low-tech movement will serve as an example illustrating how the lens of Erich Fromm’s theory allows better understanding of this phenomenon. The objective of this paper is to propose a new definition and narrative of the low-tech movement which will be based on a psychological framework. The first part of this paper attempts to discuss the characteristics of this phenomenon in the context of the grand ideas of Modernism and demonstrate how important it is to define it. The existing definitions of low-tech presented in the second part of the article bear a significant downside as they only focus on the physical aspects of this movement, i.e. materials and methods of construction. The third part of the paper suggests an alternative definition which allows extending research to include a psychological perspective onto the movement and incorporates the motivation of the creators and users of low-tech architecture. Based on the case study of Paulina Wojciechowska’s work and the newly proposed definition combined with a model based on the psychological theory developed by Erich Fromm, the paper attempts to introduce a narrative that reveals more about low-tech than even the most detailed description of physical materials and methods of construction. N2 - In order to elucidate how the concept of freedom is developed in the theory of contemporary philosopher and psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, based mainly on his book entitled Escape from freedom, as well as on the bibliographical review of this author and his researchers, this study presents the anthropological theory of this philosopher, in order to deepen the Frommian conception of freedom, marked by the ambiguity that generates a dialectical process of growing and escape. The negative aspects of freedom are characterized by a feeling of powerless and loneliness and by the fragility of the individual's self, which makes the human unconscious create mechanisms to escape freedom: the authoritarianism, destructiveness and automation conformity. However, freedom is ontological to man and its growing is a process of individualization and human realization. Aware of these existential contradictions, Erich Fromm proposes that the expression of the individual's intellectual, emotional and sensuous potentialities, together with economic, political and cultural transformations in society, are the alternative for the constitution of humanism. With all its advantages, humans are required to create a balanced and harmonious life in this world, with happiness being the main goal, because all humans desire happiness in this world. Happiness seems to be a hope or longed-for goal in human life in general. This article is a comparative study of happiness between Al-Ghazali's thoughts from an Islamic perspective and Eric Fromm's thoughts from a psychological perspective. This study uses a library research approach. The results of this study show that the concept of happiness in the Islamic view according to Al-Ghazali is that happiness will be obtained when we know ourselves and know God and in the psychological view according to Erich Fromm it is that happiness will be obtained when we do not depend on other people or things for our lives objects, but in oneself, by becoming an active and productive human being.
