N2 - Fromm was one of the first psychoanalysts to deal with the crisis of civilization. His ideas about human nature, the social character and the social unconscious, the pathology of normalcy and the ideal of productivity are important. Fromm criticizes industrialism for its unrealizable promises of freedom and happiness, which correspond to an ideology of growth and progress. The satisfaction of >false< needs and desires does not lead to human well-being. N2 - Erich Fromm’s life during the 1930s, his confrontation with Nazism and his family’s experience of the Holocaust is explored. The impact of this period on his writing, especially Escape from Freedom is considered. The current political situation, in which anti-Semitism has increased and minorities are persecuted makes the examination of Fromm’s experience of persecution and exile especially relevant. The author uses his own German family history and his discovery of his grandfather’s Nazi past to examine the importance of Fromm’s analysis of authoritarian tendencies in Germany in the early 1930s. N2 - Fromm’s necrophilous character is evident in state and governmentally run psychiatric hospitals in the United States. Rigid over-reliance on behavioral interventions can be seen as defensive posturing against the terror of uncertainty when confronted with psychosis. Clinical vignettes with institutionalized schizophrenic adults are presented. A plea is made for clinicians to work from a position of respect and love to fight the dehumanization that can result when a psychoanalytic mindset is abandoned. Secondly, I expound how relevant the often ignored social psychoanalytical approach is for current thinking in terms of relatedness, and how open his approach is to insights stemming from human biology. This last aspect of Fromm’s heritage allows us to speak of him as an existentially minded thinker. His analysis of human situation, theory of existential needs, view on human nature as undefined, theory of freedom and theory of being as opposed to having make a priceless contribution to the existentialist line of thought. N2 - Mainstream social science has been blindsided by the rise of Trumpism and broader growth of authoritarian populism. We make the case that Frommian work is desperately needed inside the core of contemporary social science theorizing by examining social character theory up against and alongside the concept of habitus developed by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Both Fromm and Bourdieu were concerned with the human costs of social change and economic development, Fromm with his writings on advanced capitalism in The Sane Society (1955a) and on Mexican village life in Social Character in a Mexican Village (with Michael Maccoby, 1970b), and Bourdieu with his extended studies of peasants in Algeria during the French colonial war of the 1950s and early 1960s. We will compare and contrast the theory of social character developed in the Mexican study with Bourdieu's concept of habitus, and discuss what Fromm's ideas can add to Bourdieu-influenced critical social science. N2 - In this paper I compare Fromm’s account of social transformation with that of Alain Touraine. I argue that although there are many points of connection between Fromm’s account of >the art of living< and Alain Touraine’s account of the >Politics of the Subject,< Fromm ultimately goes beyond Touraine at many points, offering a more detailed explanatory account of how individual transformation is related to the larger, but related, goal of social transformation. I conclude that Fromm’s often overlooked account of the mechanics of individual change ought to be returned to in the process of reinvigorating social theory and practice. N2 - One of the most important political changes in Europe, the USA and beyond is the growth of nationalistic parties and authoritarian structures within states. This contribution aims to demonstrate how a Frommian perspective on basic psychological needs, asynchronicity and alienation could contribute to a social-psychological understanding of nationalistic trends. At the end of the paper, we present some conclusions drawn from this social-psychological point of view concerning the development of a sane society. N2 - This is an approach to Mexican female delinquency from a Frommian sadomasochism and a non-punitive criminal justice perspective, based on autobiographical life stories written by women confined in Mexican prisons. Those women have always lived in a society which assaults them in a thousand ways and treats them with inequity; whatever their crime, they are not judged with a gender perspective. Almost all are poor, many of them are mothers forced to abandon their children to serve their sentence behind bars in despicable conditions, accused of crimes that many times they commit induced by their partners' behavior against them. N2 - The aim of this paper is to examine post-truth politics using Erich Fromm’s theory of narcissism and showing a route towards a sane society in Fromm’s sense. Post-truth situations are generated by negative synergistic effects between narcissistic psychological tendencies and social media. Both of them have so-called filter bubble effects which segregate people from inner and outer reality. The process of integrating an unknown experience or reality into the self produces a new experience. That is a definition of Fromm’s love and the way to overcome narcissism. N2 - The work of Erich Fromm is often overlooked in contemporary feminist thought. Yet important areas of relevance—his critiques of symbiotic love and sadomasochism, advocacy of mutual recognition, and objections to patriarchal presumptions in Freud’s work—render Fromm’s thought useful for feminists. Disadvantages adhere in Fromm’s ideas too, including sexist language and biologically-tinged maternalism. However, this paper reinterprets these problems to advocate for rediscovering both Fromm’s feminist and humanist aspirations. N2 - This paper shows that Fromm's discussion is curiously connected to the tradition of American individualism. In Escape from Freedom, Fromm suggests that authoritarianism derives from aloneness as a result of modern individualism and entrusts his hope in democracy for spontaneous activity and solidarity. But why is spontaneous activity and solidarity hopeful in democracy? The interesting thing is, this conclusion is close to the discussion of Alexis de Tocqueville, who also regarded spontaneous relationships as an important foundation of democracy. Based on Tocqueville's insight, there is a tradition in sociology that argues for the relationship between democracy and individualism, such as David Riesman's The Lonely Crowd and Robert Bellah's Habits of the Heart. This paper attempts to show how Fromm was influenced by the tradition of American individualism and discusses Fromm's impact on later American individualism studies. Its complexities will be explored in a clinical case, emphasizing traumatic experience and unconscious conflict across developmental phases. The patient, a young adult white man began analysis complaining of anxiety and depression. Born to adolescent parents, he had experienced infantile stress and childhood traumatic illness. Needy, greedy, and dependent, he was gratified by the frequency and intimacy of psychoanalysis. Genetic interpretation and reconstruction were particularly important in the analytic process. Analytic progress with attenuation of unconscious conflict and developmental transformation proved enduring after termination. The aim of terrorism is to take command over our feelings and our imagination to compel us to change our ways of life and release a clash between civilizations. In my discussion, I will concentrate on identity, an individual’s feeling of being unique, having a coherent self while at the same time being part of a large group. My intention is to link the concept of identity to affects and thinking and the loss of reality-testing when the group is dominated by schizo-paranoid anxiety. N2 - Richard Yates (1926-1992) is an American novelist. He is known as >the great writer in the age of anxiety<, and at the same time he is a loyal recorder of the mainstream American life in the mid-20th century. The novel >Eleven Kinds of Loneliness< is the first short story collection of American writer Richard Yates. It has gained a great response since its publication, and has been well received by the major media. It is also known as New York’s Dubliners. Based on Fromm’s neo-psychoanalysis, this thesis selects four stories with typical characteristics in >Eleven Kinds of Loneliness<. Through the analysis of the characters in the novel, the writer discovers the different situations of people, the mutual needs of people and different social characters are the causes of loneliness, which provides theoretical basis and research ideas for the future study of the theme of loneliness. Fromm’s neo-psychoanalytic theory is derived from the theory of psychoanalysis, which mainly includes the human situation, human needs and social character. The human situation mainly includes the weakness and contradictoriness of human beings. The human needs mainly include the congruity and relevance of human beings. The social character mainly includes unhealthy social character orientation and mixed social character orientation. This thesis combines the three aspects of Fromm’s neo-psychoanalytic theory with the theme of loneliness. Through the interpretation of the characters of the orphans Vincent, sergent Reece, Harry and other characters in the novel, the writer tries to find the roots of their loneliness and provide some solutions to solve loneliness. This thesis consists of six chapters: The first chapter briefly introduces the writer and his work, expounds the research status of the text and the author at home and abroad, and briefly introduces the innovation point of this thesis.– The second chapter briefly introduces the theoretical framework, the emergence of neo-psychoanalysis and the content of Fromm’s neo-psychoanalytic theory. At the same time, it emphasizes that Fromm’s neo-psychoanalytic theory is different from the previous psychoanalytic theory. It emphasizes the feelings of ordinary people and pays more attention to the relationship between human and society.– The third chapter starts from the relationship between human beings and loneliness. It also analyzes the weakness of human beings in biology and the contradiction between the life and death. The loneliness expressed is the same, although the situation is different. Finally, the reader is given some advice on solving loneliness.– The fourth chapter discusses the impact of human needs on loneliness. In a society like this, everyone is an individual, but we should maintain a good relationship with the outside world, and learn to give others what they really need, and bravely pursue what we need. Finally, I give the reader some advice on how to face loneliness.– The fifth chapter introduces the relationship between social character and loneliness, and emphasizes the loneliness was caused by unhealthy character orientations. Finally, the reader is called upon to develop a good social character.– The sixth chapter gives a more profound summary of the full thesis. There are still some shortcomings in the analysis of the thesis, but I hope that this thesis can provide a new idea and direction for the research of this novel. N2 - Psychoanalytic inquiry into operas based on the life of Oedipus may provide further knowledge on the Oedipus complex. Therefore, we chose to analyze Enescu’s >Œdipe< and Stravinsky’s >Oedipus Rex<. Two distinct methodologies were used in our study. The first explored the concept of free association through musical themes in the operas. The second involved the comparative study of the Oedipus myth in order to provide a deeper understanding of Oedipus’s character. We observed that Oedipus displayed symptoms of his complex through the traits of aggressiveness and arrogance. Moreover, we noticed that Oedipus was compelled by the necessity of finding out who his real parents were and by unconsciously accomplishing the prophecy. Oedipus assumed the responsibility to free the Thebans from plague. Yet, it was too late, for the feared part of the prophecy was already accomplished. He provided a wrong answer to the Sphinx and then received the most severe punishment, one that would have ostracism as its outcome. It was, however, not too late for Oedipus to finally discover who his real parents were. Nevertheless, afraid of losing his place as King of Thebes, he investigated the plague’s causes. This resulted in his aggression as he resisted discovering >where babies come from.< Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Rogenhofer, Christoph T1 - Die Verwirklichung des menschlichen Lebens und ihr Fehlschagen bei Erich Fromm, Wissenschaftliche Hausarbeit, Universität Passau 2019, 24 pp. (https://www.grin.com/document/501239) Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Rohde-Dachser, Christa T1 - Vorwort T2 - C. N2 - Nowadays, violence appears in various forms in Brazil. From an agricultural country, Brazil became rapidly industrialized, which resulted in large rural exodus and explosion of population density in major cities. Brazil faces today a great social and economic disparity, added to endemic corruption of government, nepotism and lack of social planning. The roots of such violence can be found in our archaic heritage that has been forming Brazilian identity since its early days. The interest of former colonizers was to extract wealth, without regarding the establishment of a nation. This exploitation has been always done by force and violence, with the slave labor of native Indians and imported black people. As a state Brazil was exposed to the primal father’s law, and to the absence of a symbolic father, who could have provided his people with a more stable identity, only given by the paternal law. Is it possible to reframe archaic heritage, rebuilding the missing father image without resorting to a false savior of the fatherland? Is it possible to construct a more equitable society that could propitiate true conditions of citizenship in order to make every citizen, to the extent possible, the protagonist of his own history? The absence of intimate and specific recognition and response by the caretaker of a child can create, by their omission, a >freeze< version of the fight/flight/freeze trauma response. The frozen moments, then dissociated, can become confusion and paralysis at the cusp of adulthood. This state is illustrated in the case below of a 23-year-old Chinese woman being treated by a 29-year-old Chinese male psychoanalytic fellow. The role of cultural context in >omission< is highlighted regarding development and treatment, which is taking place in a Communist society with a recent violent history of extinguishing individuality, modifying how attachment and individuation are expressed. A relational/interpersonal treatment orientation is applied and advocated at this intersection of individual and social realities. This paper contributes to attachment theory by raising awareness of how its many forms and outcomes may or may not be deemed healthy and functional. Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Rudnytsky, Peter L. Rudnytsky continues his quest for a >re-vision< of psychoanalysis by coupling his revival of the unjustly neglected figure of Erich Fromm with his latest groundbreaking research on Ferenczi and Groddeck. Committed at once to a humanistic and to a literary psychoanalysis, Rudnytsky explores the subjective roots of creativity and critiques the authoritarianism that has been a tragic aspect of Freud’s legacy.Through his clinically informed interpretations he brings out both >hidden realities< and >emergent meanings< of the texts and authors he examines, including Shakespeare’s Othello and Macbeth, as well as Milton’s Paradise Lost. A preeminent scholar of the history and theory of psychoanalysis, Rudnytsky displays an interdisciplinary expertise that makes Formulated Experiences truly sui generis and unlike any existing book. Bridging the artificial divide between the academic and clinical worlds, his eloquent championing of the interpersonal and relational traditions will captivate contemporary psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, while his insightful close readings provide a model for psychoanalytic literary critics. Fromm is praised for his espousal of a humanistic psychoanalysis as well as his critique of authoritarianism, and his concept of >literary psychoanalysis< is introduced. Freud’s interpretation of Oedipus Rex is shown to be important as much for its >unformulated< assumption of a >hidden reality< theory of the mind as for his extrapolation of the idea of the Oedipus complex. The humanism of Fromm is contrasted with Sullivan’s claim that personal individuality is an >illusion<; Stern and Bromberg are critiqued for decoupling trauma from dissociation and for positing that these are normal conditions of the mind. It is argued that a forensic stance is warranted in hermeneutic endeavors and that it is possible to reconcile objectivist and constructivist epistemologies. The opening section reviews the debate between >theological< and >Romantic< critics of Milton’s poem—C. S. Lewis and Stanley Fish, on the one hand, and A. J. A. Although Waldock pointed to the structural contradictions in the epic, and Empson argued that God was >put on trial< in the narrative, the neo-Christians have gotten the upper hand because the neo-Romantics have been unable to provide an overarching framework to account for their observations. The middle section furnishes such a framework by synthesizing Kenneth Burke’s >logological< analysis of the Fall as inevitable from a narrative perspective with Bernard Paris’s insight that God is the supreme narcissist in the poem. She is famous for depicting the life story of ordinary immigrants and perfectly infusing the story with thought-provoking themes. >The Lowland< (2008), a typical story of immigrants, is Lahiri’s newest practice on the situation of modern people’s lives. This thesis, on the basis of Erich Fromm’s explanation of alienation theory, tries to explore the characters’ predicament of self-pursuit as a result of social alienation, the alienation in interpersonal relations and self-estrangement.– In >The Lowland<, the characters’ self-pursuit is first prevented by social alienation. Under the background of capitalist society, man has to be submissive to the state and social norms. In doing so, the characters hands over the dominance of their own lives to others, and thus lose the power to achieve self-pursuit. Moreover, the alienation from interpersonal relations also exerts effects on the characters’ self-pursuit. In different interpersonal relations, the characters have to play different roles, which are often against what they really want to be. So the choice between fulfillment of inner desires and conformity to outer demands often confuses the characters, leading them to a directionless journey of self-pursuit. Last but not least, the characters’ powerlessness in their wrestling with the internal and external forces blocks their way to self-pursuit. Falling into irrational passions, they feel powerless while trying to control their own lives, and finally become indifferent to themselves and the world.– Lahiri meticulously depicts the difficulties that the characters in The Lowland have encountered in their self-pursuit resulted from social alienation, the alienation in inter-personal relations and self-estrangement. It fully shows Lahiri’s deep insight into human existential dilemma as well as their awkward predicament on the journey of fulfilling a real self, which is of great significance for people today to have a reflection on what to be and where to go. N2 - Freedom is not only an important real life problem, but also an important philosophical problem. From the moment of human consciousness, the pursuit of freedom has never been interrupted. Through continuous efforts, modern western countries overthrew the feudal rule through the bourgeois revolution and established the capitalist democratic system one after another, and people gained unprecedented freedom. However, for this hard-won freedom, people do not enjoy it very much but go to the opposite of freedom. Some people eagerly contributed their own freedom and joined fascist, Hitler and other totalitarian organizations, triggering a series of wars and social crises. For this phenomenon of escaping from freedom, Fromm, one of the main representatives of western Marxism, made a profound study and analysis, and concluded that negative freedom could not bring people complete freedom, and only positive freedom was the real freedom of people. Fromm’s positive freedom of thought is mainly inherited Marx’s historical materialism thought and Freud’s psychoanalysis theory, he absorbed the Freud’s unconscious theory, personality theory and Marx’s alienation and freedom thinking and freedom, at the same time, he also deeply Judaism’s salvation of feelings and thoughts of the messiah. Fromm more inclined to Marx’s thoughts, however, he thinks that Marx’s historical materialism reveals the various contradictions in capitalist society, and on the profound analysis and criticism, and Freud’s mechanical materialism as the essence of man needs only the need of sexual desire, his mind will not have the same depth and breadth of Marx, with an insurmountable limitations. Although Fromm’s positive freedom thought has inherited Marx’s thought to a large extent, he is quite different from Marx’s freedom thought, whether it is the understanding of the nature of human beings, or the idea of human alienation, or their views on the positive freedom they pursue and the way to achieve it. To some extent, his positive freedom and thought make up the deficiency of Marx’s view of freedom and have important research value. Fromm’s freedom thought not only has irreplaceable theoretical significance, but also has important guiding significance for solving the problems encountered by China in the transition period. At present, the rapid development of science and technology has brought great changes to our lives, a high level of quality of life, convenient way of life, comfortable life environment, however, the mental condition of people has not good what we expected, we face the same as the capitalist society at that time the social crisis and spiritual crisis: People’s spiritual emptiness, confusion, well-being decline, indifference between people, alienation. Therefore, the study of Fromm’s positive freedom thought is of great significance to analyze and solve the current dilemma of freedom in China. This paper consists of four parts. The first part mainly introduces the personal experience of Fromm, and analyzes the influence of Fromm’s social background and personal life experience on the formation of his thought from the social historical background and main theoretical sources.– The second part is the basic content of Fromm’s positive freedom thought. Through the establishment of the connotation of modern positive freedom thought and Fromm’s criticism of modern freedom thought, Fromm’s positive freedom thought and the realization of positive freedom are introduced.– The third part is to compare Fromm with Marx’s positive freedom thought. Through Marx and Fromm’s views on people, understanding of alienation and understanding of positive freedom, the author analyzes the merits and limitations of Fromm’s positive freedom.– The fourth part is the contemporary value of Fromm’s positive freedom thought. Fromm’s positive freedom thought has important theoretical value and practical value, which is of great reference significance for China’s socialist modernization and for solving the problems of contemporary Chinese and social development. But Fromm’s freedom thinking also has some shortcomings, which need to be taken as a warning. [Author’s translation] Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Rudnytsky, Peter L. N2 - This chapter provides a comprehensive overview and rehabilitation of Erich Fromm’s importance as a psychoanalyst. Fromm is lauded for having been an unsurpassed analyst of psychoanalytic politics and the incarnation of what it means to be an independent psychoanalyst, who was unjustly attacked both by orthodox analysts and by his erstwhile colleagues in the Frankfurt School. His 1935 essay, >The Social Determinants of Psychoanalytic Therapy,< in which the influence of Ferenczi and Groddeck is directly acknowledged, and his 1959 book, Sigmund Freud’s Mission, are hailed as summits of his achievement, while The Greatness and Limitations of Freud’s Thought shows him in decline. Three weak points in Fromm’s thought are identified: (1) his tendency to flatten out an individual level of analysis into a purely social level; (2) his penchant for shifting the blame for the problems in psychoanalysis away from Freud onto his followers; and (3) his assumption that motherly love is unconditional. Fromm’s defense of radical humanism is compared with that of Orwell, and it is shown to be grounded not only in philosophy but above all in natural science in The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness. N2 - This chapter employs Fromm’s concept of the >magic helper< to analyze the symbiotic nature of the Freud-Ferenczi relationship. Because both sadists and masochists, according to Fromm, are unable to tolerate genuine freedom, the sadist is dependent on the masochist, no less than the masochist is dependent on the sadist. As Clara Thompson, who was in analysis with both Ferenczi and Fromm, recognized, Ferenczi suffered from his need to be loved and accepted by Freud, and unconsciously resented him for that reason. Fromm’s contrast between the >original self< and the >pseudo self< parallels Winnicott’s antithesis between the True Self and the False Self, as well as Horney’s antinomy between the >real self< and >phony self.< Marcuse’s critique of Fromm is based on an adherence to Freud’s outmoded drive theory. Whereas Freud plays the role of what Daniel Shaw calls the >traumatizing narcissist< in his relationship with Ferenczi, Ferenczi, until his emancipation in his final years, exhibits the deformations resulting from what Bernard Brandchaft calls >pathological accommodation.< Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Rudnytsky, Peter L. N2 - This chapter presents the discovery that Elizabeth Severn’s 1933 book, The Discovery of the Self, contains disguised case histories of both herself and Ferenczi, and thereby constitutes a companion volume to Ferenczi’s Clinical Diary. From having been known primarily as >R.N.,< the most important patient in the Diary, Severn emerges as a subject and original contributor to psychoanalysis in her own right. Severn’s reception of Ferenczi’s legacy is compared to that of two of his other American patients, Izette de Forest and Clara Thompson, the latter of whom envied Severn for her closeness to Ferenczi. Multiple correspondences between the accounts of Ferenczi and Severn of their mutual analysis, as well as of their histories, are set forth. The significance of Strindberg’s play, The Father, for Ferenczi’s transference to Severn is examined. Ferenczi and Severn are shown to have been two deeply traumatized individuals who healed themselves by finding their spiritual counterparts in each other. N2 - The conflict between Freud and Ferenczi during Ferenczi’s final period centers as much on their differences in technique as on Ferenczi’s revival of Freud’s pre-1897 trauma theory. Severn is the first patient since the 1890s whose childhood sexual trauma was the focus of her analysis, just as she was the first since Anna O. whose trauma-based dissociation was integral to her treatment. The corollary of the revival of trauma theory is a model of the mind based not on repression but dissociation. Ferenczi belongs to a tradition of analysts including Breuer, Fairbairn, and Sullivan who worked with a dissociation model. The fountainhead of this tradition is Janet, but though Ferenczi read and quoted from Janet, no references to Janet are found in Ferenczi’s work after 1924, when he began to move away from Freud. It is necessary to integrate scholarship on Ferenczi with the vast body of work on dissociation. Ferenczi is situated between Freud and Severn. Reversing the traditional verdicts, Ferenczi’s relationship to Freud is viewed as an enactment, whereas his relationship with Severn constitutes an authentic dialogue. N2 - This chapter examines both >Groddeck’s teaching,< in the sense of the enduing value of his contributions to psychoanalysis, as well as >Groddeck’s lessons,< that is, what we can learn from his blind spots. The question of who is a psychoanalyst stands at the center of Groddeck’s relationship to Freud, and in accepting Groddeck’s assertion that transference and resistance are the >hubs of treatment,< Freud offers his most expansive definition of a psychoanalyst. Groddeck’s genius is most fully displayed in The Book of the It, the epistolary form of which casts him at once in the roles of analyst and patient. From Groddeck’s biography, it is clear that he was an extremely traumatized individual, as is further attested by his analysis in Letter 25 of his penchant for the number 26,783. But Groddeck does not recognize that he has been traumatized, and his one-sided theory that the It is >responsible for everything< reflects his inability to give due weight to environmental factors. Despite his astonishing candor, Groddeck never discusses his divorce from his first wife or the tragic story of his daughter Barbara, wounds that must have too painful for him to expose to the gaze of the reading public. Hidden Realities and Emergent Meanings from Shakespeare to Fromm, London and New York (Routledge) 2019, pp. 167-186. N2 - This chapter employs Caroline Polmear’s contemporary reinterpretation of Michael Balint’s concept of the basic fault as a lens through which to read Othello and Macbeth. In Polmear’s view, borderline pathology arises due to a traumatic rupture in the primal bond between mother and child, and it can take the form of either ocnophilia (clinging to people) or philobatism (clinging to spaces). It is proposed that Othello and Macbeth are representations of these complementary character-types. Othello cannot tolerate any separation from Desdemona, while Macbeth retreats into schizoid isolation. The handkerchief, the loss of which is tantamount to the loss of Desdemona’s love, was received by Othello from his mother at the time of her death, while in Macbeth the rupture of the mother-child bond is figured both in Macduff’s having been >untimely ripped< from his mother’s womb and by Lady Macbeth’s description of killing the baby that was nursing at her breast. Two clinical examples—one of an actual patient, the other of Philip Roth—are offered to illustrate the reciprocal interplay of literature and psychoanalysis. It is argued that the traditional notion of >applied psychoanalysis< should be replaced by what might be called, following Shoshana Felman, >implied psychoanalysis,< or what Fromm has called >literary psychoanalysis.< Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Rudnytsky, Peter L. Hidden Realities and Emergent Meanings from Shakespeare to Fromm, London and New York (Routledge) 2019, pp. 187-204. N2 - This chapter tackles the perennial critical conundrum of Iago’s motivation. Agreeing with Coleridge’s assessment of his >motiveless malignity,< it argues that all attempts to explain Iago’s character in terms of individual psychology prove inadequate and that he can be more satisfactorily understood by employing Fromm’s concept of >social character.< Iago is the prototype of early modern capitalist man who exhibits the >pathology of normalcy< and exemplifies three of Fromm’s four >unproductive orientations<—exploitative, hoarding, and marketing. Iago’s lack of a sense of self leads him to destroy rather than to create, and thus manifests the impulse for negative transcendence, or what Fromm terms necrophilia. As necrophilia is the most malignant form of the anal character, this analysis accounts for the pervasiveness of anal imagery in Othello, including in the speeches of the otherwise feeble Clown. Iago, neither devil nor human, is at once a product of his age and the quintessence of all those, from Caligula to Hitler, for whom madness is a way of life because they seek to transcend through destruction the limits of human existence. N2 - This chapter takes to task Elisabeth Roudinesco’s biography, Freud in His Time and Others, for innumerable factual errors and, even worse, for the assumption that she is presenting the objective truth about Freud. Three traditions of Freud biography are delineated: the hagiographic, of which Roudinesco’s is the latest example, the Freud-bashing, and the revisionist, which sees Freud as having created something incontestably great but also as having been tragically flawed as a human being. Roudinesco’s errors range from the trivial, to the mildly compromising, to the inexcusable and disqualifying. With respect to Jung, Roudinesco is shown to rely on Deirdre Bair’s biography, which is itself unreliable, instead of on her own reading of the primary sources. Roudinesco’s true colors are displayed above all in her treatment of Freud’s sexuality, as when she asserts that he has been >accused< of masturbation, claims that an affair with his sister-in-law >doubtless never happened,< and alleges that Freud had a >horror of adultery.< The all-too-human Freud was very different from the lifeless icon worshiped by Roudinesco. The first 20 years of the Federation were a time when psychoanalysis was divided into so-called liberal and orthodox factions. The (then orthodox) International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) did not admit all psychoanalytic societies, and some societies did not want to join it. In the IFPS, non-IPA-psychoanalysts from Europe, the USA, and South and Middle America came together to discuss their new approaches to psychoanalysis and to find ways to better cope with their patients’ problems. At the beginning an informal organization of autonomous societies, the IFPS persisted for 12 years without a charter. The first three secretary generals came from the German Psychoanalytical Society and greatly influenced the first few years of the IFPS. The IFPS held several international conferences, and new psychoanalytic societies became members. In 1977, after the VIth Forum in Berlin, the IFPS fell into an identity crisis. The conflicts centered on the assumption of responsibility, the authority of the members, and how to understand the aim and sense of the organization. This article deals with the theoretical background of the early IFPS and the development of its self-concept. Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Innocenti, Gionata T1 - Der Held seines eigenen Dramas. The recent realization that there is no such thing as a baby, but only a mother-and-baby unit, has opened the way to the further understanding that there is no such thing as a mother-and-baby unit >extra-context<. In other words, there is always a father in the background – be he real or phantasized. Separation, therefore, cannot but be conceptualized as involving a triangle. It should never be forgotten that Oedipus’s own life history starts with a separation initiated by a father and acquiesced with by a mother. Through the study and reflection of Freud, Marx and Frankfurt School theory, they have inherited and developed theories and opinions about human problems. Fromm gradually formed his own humanistic ideology.– This article mainly carries on the analysis to Fromm’s humanism thought, altogether divides into four parts. The first part examines the formation and development of Erich Fromm’s humanism. Mainly from two aspects of theory origin and realistic background, carding and analysis theory of the origin mainly talked about the critical absorption of Freud’s psychoanalysis, a new interpretation of Marx’s humanistic thought and inheritance of the Frankfurt school critical theory development, realistic background is from Fromm’s special personal life experiences and elaborates the time background of life.– The second part examines the main content of Fromm’s humanism. According to the basic theory is to explore the human nature to explain his theory of human nature; The core idea is the analysis of the >human survival dilemma<, that is, how to get out of the human survival dilemma in the state of alienation; The aim of the theory revolves around the exploration of a sound society.– The third part is to compare and analyze Fromm’s humanistic thought with Frankfurt school, the representative of psychoanalysis school and Marx’s humanistic theory, and summarize the characteristics of Fromm’s humanistic thought from the aspects of research basis, research methodology and solution path.– The fourth part analyzes the value and limitation of Fromm’s humanism and its enlightenment to the contemporary society from the perspective of objective dialectics. On the one hand, it affirms that Fromm’s humanistic thought deepens the understanding of human nature and provides a new perspective for the study of capitalist society. On the other hand, it also points out the limitations of his thoughts, such as the contradiction in the discussion of human nature and the lack of effectiveness of the road to eliminate alienation. However, it is undeniable that for the construction of a harmonious society and the creation of a society where people, people and nature, and people and society live in harmony, Fromm’s theory still has profound theoretical and practical significance and is worth learning. It echoes the idea that human beings are rational and self-conscious animals, and it also shows people the hope of satisfying interests or realizing potential. >What is freedom? How can freedom be achieved?< It has also been a problem that thinkers have been thinking hard over the years. However, in the book >Escape from Freedom<, Fromm pointed out the burden of freedom from a personal psychological level, and revealed the mass psychology of the lower classes in the era of capitalism and the big machine, that is, escape from freedom. The dissolution of self-worth, the monopoly of capital, the oppression of Protestantism, and similar competition have broken people's originating bonds. The increasing sense of loneliness and anxiety makes people even yearn for the rule of external authority and take the initiative to remove the burden of personal self and freedom. Typical authoritarian politics, fascism, was born with time. In the face of various modern crises, how can freedom be possible? In fact, freedom must be expressed and realized through social channels, and it must also be safeguarded through the maintenance of social communities. He is also one of the main representatives of Western Marxists, Frankfurt School, and the founder of the Neo-Freud School people. In his life, he created many theories that are worthy of us to draw on and cause us to think. This article is an in-depth discussion on his critical thoughts of capitalism. Fromm’s critical thoughts are mainly aimed at modern western capitalist society. There are many loopholes. From a new perspective, there are still many problems in our society that need to be solved urgently. This is also the original intention of this thesis to choose Fromm's critical thought. This thesis makes every effort to demonstrate Fromm’s critical theory from three aspects: the development of Fromm’s critical theory of capitalism, the main connotation and influence of capitalist’s critical theory, and the significance of Fromm’s critical theory. This article focuses on Fromm's critique of Western capitalism, and his imagination and realization of a sound society. In Fromm's point of view, modern capitalism seems to be prosperous and prosperous, but looking behind it through phenomena, it exists as a pathological society. Alienation of humans and alienation of society have developed into extremely serious situations Fromm criticized the alienation of the production process, the alienation of consumption, and the alienation of social relations. At the same time, Fromm put forward the concept of >sound society< according to the problems brought about by the sick society. Fromm has transformed the capitalist society from four aspects: psychological, economic, political, and cultural, to build a sound society. However, Fromm's ideal world is too beautiful, just like a utopia, and there are some shortcomings in the theory, but Marx's and Freud's views have been sublimated here. Fromm's social critical theory has undergone the development of western capitalism. It has thoroughly studied and analyzed western society, and answered basic questions facing people in today's society. Through our research on Fromm's theory of critical thought on capitalism, we find that his critical theory is also worthy of reference in today's China. Today's China lacks a lot in terms of economics, politics and spirituality. There are social, economic, and political crises that lead to the scapegoating of one group designated as the enemy. It represents a mental instrument that validates dehumanizing the chosen enemy and gives >meaning< to the extermination of dangerous >elements< as part of a battle between good and evil. In the case of suicide bombers and terrorists, sacrifice and devotion to the ideology that promises martyrdom and support for sacred ideals are requirements. Some researchers talk about the personality of the torturer, particularly about how some childrearing practices annihilate children’s sense of self by teaching them to be obedient to authority. Others talk about the role of moral disengagement and the role of specialized military training. Psychoanalytic thinkers emphasize that the key mechanisms at work in these atrocities are splitting, paranoid projections, projective identification, sadomasochistic forces, strong mechanisms of negation and dissociation, and an extremely weak social identity. Those who commit evil acts seldom perceive their actions as evil. This paper focuses on the social influences that lead to dehumanizing and blaming the >other,< and childrearing practices that influence the creation of the genocidal mentality. N2 - Flaubert claimed mastery in matters of style in the French language as well as in the psychological sciences. Mastery in both areas is on clear display in the writing of Madame Bovary. Our heroine presents as a new kind of personality, namely as someone who depends greatly on sensory experience in order to maintain her emotional equilibrium. So, when under stress, she can only find some kind of soothing comfort in her perfumes, silks, and cashmeres. This dynamic pattern leaves her at a disadvantage when tasked with higher level life requirements – such as the payment of bills, the very thing that, in the end, causes her ruin. Dynamically, failures of memory and the resulting fragmentation of experience leave her with a precarious sense of self. For our heroine, there is little ability to link present experience to the past and therefore no possibility of metaphoric or symbolic thinking; in other words, she is condemned to repeat. Flaubert felt that Madame Bovary would only have original value as the sum of his psychological understandings. Further, he hoped his psychological work, often hidden under the form, would be deeply felt by the reader, as it was by him. N2 - Characters in Saul Bellow’s works are most Jews, thus scholars often study >Seize the Day< from the cultural perspectives, such as Jewishness or the dual contexts of Jew and America. And some study Jew’s existence plight from the perspective of existentialism. Although the research perspectives are different, scholars agree that the protagonist Wilhelm in the novelette suffers from an existence predicament and that the ending expresses Bellow’s affirmation of humanity. Yet, as to the study of social realities reflected in the novelette, scholars often concentrate on the protagonist, Wilhelm. Research devoted to exploring the way of existence in the whole society presented in the novelette is rare. The originality of this thesis lies in two aspects: firstly, it studies twisted existence, the having mode and alienation that is common among contemporary American industrial society; secondly, it focuses on the reasons for the twisted existence and possible solutions from the perspective of humanistic psychology. Based on theories of Fromm’s humanistic psychoanalysis and Maslow’s theory of self-actualization, this thesis starts with the phenomenon of twisted existence of dwellers in modern American city shown in >Seize the Day< and then gives a detailed analysis of reasons for the phenomenon. The thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one is a brief introduction to the profile of Saul Bellow and the plot of >Seize the Day< and the literature review of the novelette. It also indicates the originality and the framework of this thesis. Chapter two respectively introduces two theoretical foundations: Fromm’s humanistic psychoanalysis including the having mode and the being mode, alienation and productive orientations; Maslow’s theory of self-actualization including the definition of self-actualization and characteristics of self-actualizers. Chapter three gives an analysis of two main twisted ways of existence.– First, it analyzes the connotation of self-alienation and points out different types of mode of having of self-alienated characters. Self-alienated people cannot experience their >true self< as the subject of their activity. They are driven by the desire or the >pretender self< to conduct alienated activity against their nature and acquire possessions. As a result, they have a strong sense of insecurity for fear that they will lose the possessions. In order to maintain the sense of security, these characters in the novelette develop a submissive worship of powers outside themselves like money and status. It consists of two types of having mode: the hoarding orientation appeared in the self-reliant and successful senior generation represented by Dr. Adler and Mr. Rappaport; and consumer-buying orientation appeared in the younger middle-class represented by Wilhelm.– Second, the thesis analyzes the alienated interrelationships in American society from two aspects. In social contact, people superficially maintain a friendly relationship while deep down are indifferent to each other with calculation. In family, there is a loss of harmony and care and more apparent alienation among family members. Chapter four concentrates on exploring the reasons for their twisted existence from the perspective of humanistic psychology. The reasons should be explored from four aspects: incapability for productive love, incapability to make proper choices, incapability to discard the pretender self and incapability to live here and now. The lack of these capabilities leads to their disability of identifying with their true self and blindly pursuing outside powers for self-interest. Therefore the key point of possible solutions to this situation should be put on the development of these capabilities. The final chapter restates the thesis statement. Bellow intends to reveal the twisted way of existence of American people in the 1950s through Seize the Day. He also expresses the expectation of a sane society which can promote the healthy development of people’s self by depicting a group of psychologically unhealthy characters. The significance of this thesis lies in that by exploring the four major reasons for such twisted existence, it attempts to find the possible solution implied by Bellow: increasing the being mode and reducing the >having mode<. N2 - Oedipus complex is a psychoanalytic concept put forward by Freud. It has had a wide influence since it was publicly used in Psychology of Love in 1918. It is not only the core concept of psychoanalytic theory, but also has an important influence on Freud’s theory in other fields. For example, in the field of literature and art and in the field of social culture. After a long period of use of Oedipus Complex by Freud’s successors, its connotation has been constantly enriched and expanded, and its influence has become increasingly far-reaching. This thesis is based on the Oedipus complex as the research object, through two clues and three perspectives on the development process of Oedipus complex. The purposes of thesis are to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the development process of Oedipus complex and to analyze its value in different fields on this basis. Then it summarizes and evaluates Oedipus complex overall and explains its essential characteristics. Through the analysis and comparison of Oedipus complex from different perspectives, we can get the understanding of its essential characteris¬tics. It is an existential spiritual phenomenon internalized by social culture into individual unconsciousness and a basic structural relationship under power discourse in different cultural contexts. The Oedipus complex, Generation Complex and the desire to marry an uncle and a sister in Melanesian society are typical representatives of different styles in different cultural contexts. The literary value of Oedipus complex is elaborated in the chapter of value and evaluation of Oedipus complex. According to its development process, this thesis expounds its value of literary theory and literary criticism in different stages of development. The study of Oedipus complex is carried out under the control of these two clues and three perspectives. The main contents of the study are as follows: First, this thesis analyses Freud’s motivation to construct Oedipus complex from the original perspective of individual unconscious, its basic connotation and the multiple identities of >truth, fantasy, concept and myth<. Through the analysis of its relationship with neurosis, sexual instinct and personality structure, the position of its core concepts is explained. Klein explored the Oedipus conflict of infant psychology through early anxiety.– Second, Lacan develops the Oedipus complex into a symbolic ternary structure, and expounds the relationship between this ternary structure and Lacan’s unconsciousness, desire and tri-boundary theory from the perspective of linguistic dimension.– Third, this thesis mainly expounds the social and cultural characterization of Oedipus complex from the perspective of social culture. Specifically, the patriarchal cultural representation of Oedipus complex is embodied in Fromm’s and Malinowski’s theoretical concepts. In Anti-Oedipus, it represents the capitalist social culture under patriarchy, and in contrast with the Generation Complex, it reflects the characterization of cultural differences.– Fourth, this thesis illustrates the far-reaching influence of Oedipus Complex, analyses the value of Oedipus Complex in various fields and evaluates it. However, they have lonely thoughts of destructive desire, authoritarianism and mechanical convergence in spirit, and cannot obtain the complete freedom of the body and mind. In the perspective of Fromm’s free thought, the paper analyses the relationship between freedom and labor, combined with socialist labor values, which provides enlightenment for solving the social lonely psychological problems.
