An Inquiry into the Facts and Fictions of Foreign Policy (1961a, Portuguese) N2 - [Preface] O autor inicia sua obra discorrendo sobre a conjuntura presente em sua época, a Guerra Fria e a consequente expansão do poderio soviético ante os EUA. [Online ISSN 1547-3333] [doi.org/10.1080/08873267.1990.9976900] N2 - Reviews the book, >The Radical Spirit: Essays on Psychoanalysis and Society< by Joel Kovel (1988). The essays in this book are part of Kovel's attempt to forge a working truce between two vastly divergent discourses, the Marxian and the Freudian, each of which presents a deep critical challenge to the other. In this effort he joins a small but important group of Marxian-Freudians who have looked across the theoretical and professional boundaries dividing the two viewpoints in order to redress some of the blind spots of each – Reich, Marcuse, Erikson, Fromm, to name perhaps the best known. But what is particularly compelling in Kovel's writing is his close attention to the sometimes blatant, sometimes subtle animosities that have divided the Freudian and the Marxist camps, and his unwillingness to compromise these tensions even while focusing on specific topics. At his most successful, Kovel balances an eye for historical detail with a shrewd insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the methods he invokes, an equilibrium not easily accomplished.
