N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Erich Fromm is a famous 20th century humanist and psychoanalyst. He creatively established the humanis¬tic psychoanalysis. Fromm is deeply concerned about the alienated people in the real world, continually focusing on their mental health issues. In addition, he is committed to exploring approaches to help modern people escape from the predicament of survival, and devoting his life to the cause of human liberation. This thesis mainly discusses Fromm’s thought of sound personality, sorts out and summarizes the content of sound personality thought scattered in Fromm’s works, forms a systematic study. The thesis combines the requirements of China in the new era for the sound development of young people’s personality to explore the contemporary value of Fromm’s thought. This research mainly consists of four chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly discusses the background and significance of studying Fromm’s thought of sound personality. The second chapter is the theoretical source of Fromm’s sound personality thought, mainly introducing the background, theoretical origins, and the theoretical basis of the thought. The third chapter is the basic content of Fromm’s thought of healthy personality, mainly introducing the definition, characteristics and path of healthy personality. The third chapter is the basic content of Fromm’s sound personality thought, narrating from four aspects: the definition, characteristics, training path and the evaluation of the thought. The fourth chapter is the en¬lightenment of Fromm’s sound personality thought to the cultivation of healthy personality of young people in the new era. In this chapter, the author summarizes and discusses the characteristics of sound perso¬nality of young people in the new era from General Secretary Xi Jinping’s lecture to young people, and points out the rationality of studying Fromm’s sound personality thought in the new era. Combining with the characteristics of sound personality discussed above, the author argues that the culti¬vation of healthy personality in the new era requires the pursuit of positive freedom, the cultivation of productive oriented personality, the pursuit of a life-style of paying attention to survival, and the cultivation of the ability of creative love. Although Fromm’s thought of sound personality is a product of the capitalist society in the 20th century, it has theoretical significance and practical value for cultivating healthy youth, forming a positive social mentality and building a socialist harmonious society in China in the new era. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Love plays an important role in our daily lives, and an in-depth study of this theme can help us strengthen the bonds between people and enhance the civilization of society. As one of the representative figures of Western Marxism, Fromm believes that we should understand love from a humanitarian tradition. Fromm lived in a capitalist society with rapidly expanding material wealth. Accompanied by two world wars and an economic crisis, Fromm believes that people are in a state of alienated existence, in which man regards material possessions as the whole of his life and is alienated from himself, his fellow man, and nature. Through the observation and analysis of the current social situation, Fromm thinks about the alienation of human existence in three dimensions: the alienation of freedom, the alienation of love, and the alienation of existence. Based on Marx’s reflection on the human beings and Freud’s psychoanalytic approach, Fromm formed his theory about humanitarian love. Fromm believed that human beings have a fundamental spiritual need to long for union with others and thus escape loneliness and anxiety. It is precisely because modern Western society is unable to solve this need that people choose to escape from it in ways such as mechanized convergence and consumerism. As a kind of union based on maintaining their own independence, love can solve this spiritual need of human beings, so that people can get rid of the survival of the alienation of the predicament, to realize the liberation of human beings. In Fromm’s view, the essence of love is a dynamic creative activity, which includes both giving and creating. In addition to this, love also includes such essential elements as responsibility and respect. Fromm’s humanitarian love clarifies the true meaning of love, enabling people to reflect on the misconceptions of love and their own circumstances, so as to obtain a free and harmonious state of existence. Despite the limitations of this theory, it still has a certain reference value and usefulness for today’s world. N2 - At the center of this research is the representation of patriarchy through the image of a father figure in the novels of Vjenceslav Novak. In the Croatian literature of the 19th century, Novak stands out for his objective portrayal of all social strata, including his portrayal of the patriarchal social order. At the very beginning of this research, the terms >patriarchy< and >father figure< were defined, which must be understood for further reading and understanding of the work. The central part of the paper deals with the representation of patriarchy as a realistic theme in the construction of the father figure in Novak's novel Posljednji Stipančići (1899), so that, with the help of professional literature, the features of patriarchy in the relationship between father and son and in the relationship between father and daughter were analyzed in detail. During theanalysis of the aforementioned relationships, the daughter Lucija Stipančić will stand out the most, since her character represents the bearer of social changes. Furthermore, the paper deals with the representation of depatriarchalization due to absence of father figure in Novak's novel Pavao Šegota (1888), which takes place at the level of the characterization of the subject, the main character, whose characterization is affected by this absence. In the aforementioned chapter, due to the absence of a father figure, the emphasis will be on the relationship between the main character Pavao Šegota and his two sisters. At the very end, it will be concluded that in two of Novak's novels the features of patriarchy are very present, but that in the second mentioned novel there is a deviation from the default of patriarchal norms in the construction of the protagonist. Y1 - 2023 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Qin, Xiaoyan T1 - A Comparative Study of Marx and Fromm’s Human Nature Theory, Master thesis, Philosophy, Hunan University, Yuelu, Changsha, Hunan, China 2022. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Modern society provides conditions for people to give full play to their subjectivity, but it also pushes people to the situation of alienation. The problem of human nature has been revealed in modern society. In order to understand human nature more comprehensively and concretely and better solve the new dilemma faced by modern people, it is necessary to strengthen the research on human nature. As important representa¬tives of human nature theory in the 19th-20th century, Marx and Fromm analyzed human nature in detail in combination with the problems of the times. Marx advocated understanding and grasping human nature from the perspectives of history, practical activities and the relationship between subject and object. He believed that human nature is a social and historical process of sublating human alienation, realizing the return of human nature and occupying the real essence of man. Fromm starts from the realistic social problems, observes the concrete human nature in people, and be¬lieves that human nature is neither abstract nor infinitely plastic. Marx formed a rich theory of human nature on the basis of criticizing, inheriting and developing Hegel and Feuerbach’s theory of human nature. Fromm formed a diversified theory of human nature on the basis of interpreting, inheriting and developing Marx’s theory of human nature. Through combing, it is found that Marx and Fromm discuss from the aspects of human nature, human needs, human alienation and human liberation, so as to clarify the basis of compara¬tive research. Marx and Fromm live in different times and stand in different positions, which makes their human nature theory very different, that is, their understanding of human nature is different. Marx defines human nature from the perspective of social relations, while Fromm defines human nature by meeting human needs. Marx expressed human essence with the sum of social relations, and Fromm expressed human essence with human good potential; the understanding of human alienation is different. Marx takes alienated labor as the starting point and Fromm takes comprehensive alienation as the starting point. Marx analyzed the root of human alienation from the perspective of private ownership based on division of labor and Fromm from the perspective of the contradiction of human survival; the conception of human liberation is different. Marx’s goal is a communist society and Fromm is a humanitarian society. Marx’s path is pro¬letarian revolution, and Fromm is social and psychological change. Marx’s and Fromm’s human nature theories also have some similarities, that is, their human nature theories take >real people< as the carrier and human needs as the logical starting point; both examine human nature in the process of social history; both criticized the alienation of human nature. Facing the confusion of the times, Fromm turned his attention to Marx, inherited and developed Marx’s views on human nature, human needs, human alienation and human liberation, and formed his own human nature theory, which has an important impact on the later analysis of human nature and the study of Marx’s human nature theory. However, due to the incompleteness of the theory and the limitations of class position, Fromm’s human nature theory has some deficiencies. Marx and Fromm’s human nature theory has important enlightenment to human development in modern society, that is, to promote human personality development with deve¬lopment education, promote human free development with system reform, and strengthen labor to promote human all-round development. N2 - he basic purpose of this paper is to describe information as the most valuable currency of postmodern times onwards. Starting from the ground up, the media of mass delivery of information are systematically described and the problems encountered by senders and recipients of media messages are based on examples. The paper carefully defines today's information tools, their reach to internal and external publics, media pragmatism as a motive for using these tools, but also the general characteristics of the development of global communication. Through a discussion based on secondary data, the paper describes the principles of media communication today and, as an intriguing basis, sets the problem of information dissonance in the mass media. The global socio-economic and political environment in which the media communication process takes place is also described. Particular emphasis is placed on the rapid development of technology. With its changes, the advancement of information technology creates a fantastic environment for a great step forward in media evolution, the accelerated use of every available option for the development of media tools and techniques, and media communication strategies. Furthermore, the paper proves the stratification of the categories of recipients of media information with regard to the degree of privilege regarding the ruling political option, geolocation, profession, position in society, and especially according to personal and local standards. From the aspect of the motive for creating a scale of privileges, the goals of mass media owners, politicians and the position of power in general, which achieves its own goals with the help of opinion makers and news placement techniques, are observed. The new public is a changed audience – media users – that has advanced in demands and attitudes. The paper structures the recipients of information in relation to technological changes that have occurred in the media communication process in relation to fast, specialized and two-way communication of the new public, with special emphasis on constant and up-to-date change of media content providers and communication strategy towards the new public. Ultimately, the work results in a summary of the current state and the development of communication in the future that supports the old allegory that the pen is stronger than the sword. However, since these ideas are scattered in his works, systematic and concentrated research is needed to present his ideas. Fromm’s humanology can be summarized into two main aspects: the relationship between man and nature and the relationship between man and society. This paper is divided into an introduction and the main body. The main body of this thesis is divided into three major parts. The three parts are organized according to the framework of forming history, posing problems and solving problems, and general comments. Specifically, firstly, in the formation history part, the historical background of Fromm’s humanology is specifically divided into a small environment and the general environment. Fromm’s humanology is derived from Marx’s theory of alienated labor and human nature as well as Freud’s psychoanalytic doctrine. Secondly, in the raising problems and solving problems part, the concrete content of Fromm’s humanology is discussed. Combining two main aspects, this paper studies the relationship between man and nature and between man and society contained in the Fromm’s humanology. The dilemma of the relationship between man and nature lies in human possessive way of life, while the dilemma of the relationship between man and society lies in the alienation of love between person and person. Whereafter, on the basis of the problem, the corresponding solutions are found, that is, to get rid of the dilemma of the relationship between man and nature and man and society lies in becoming the mode of existence and carrying out a series of social reforms; finally, in connection with Marx’s view of humanology, this paper critically comments on Fromm’s anthropological thought in general: Fromm has a one-sided understanding of Marx’s concept of >possession<. Fromm fails to see the >realistic person<. At the same time, Fromm ignores >all-round development of human beings<. In short, there are some irrationalities in Fromm’s humanology, which only inherits a part of Marx’s thought but does not go beyond it indeed. Still, he has no real impact in the educative field, even if the most large part of his work deals with the human conception and the practice of an authentic – and human – way of living. In this opportunity, we use some on the principles that Fromm held in his books, to examine Elizabeth Valarino’s >All but Investigation< (ABI) syndrome, that suggest that, most of the graduates of masters and doctorates, never fulfill the task of the investigation and dissertation that is needed for achieve the grade, usually because they really don't understand what means to >make an investigation<. Therefore they didn’t expect to become a master. Usually they had in mind become a graduated but no a grader. Based on those ideas, we argue that the syndrome goes far beyond from the Valarino’s assumptions. ABI is a real systemic – and socio-psychological – phenomena that has to be studied with new theories and research designs. Perhaps – as usual, we think –, the conclusions are so exploratives and not as precise as needed. But it’s a fresh start. [ir.lib.uwo.ca/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1979&context=etd] N2 - The increasing number of injurious falls amongst older people living in the community is continuously portrayed as a major public health problem facing the Canadian health care system. As additional resources are allocated for community-based fall prevention programs, health service providers are increasingly expected to understand and enact fall prevention in effective and meaningful ways. The aim of this two-phase interpretive phenomenological study was to enhance understandings of the taken-for-granted meanings that characterize everyday practices of community-based fall prevention in order to foster more sensitive, tactful, and meaningful approaches to fall prevention with older people. In the first phase of this study, I engaged nine older people living independently in the community in individual phenomenological interviews to explore the meaning of the experience of anticipating falling. In the second phase of this study I engaged six health professionals working on a community outreach team in phenomenological interviews exploring the meaning of the experience of enacting fall prevention with older people in the community. The findings of this two-phase study overall gave rise to four key insights that may inform the refinement of fall risk assessment and fall prevention practice for physiotherapists and other service providers. First, a phenomenological ethics of caring was central to enacting fall prevention for service providers in the community. Second, lived-identity was central to the experience of anticipating falling for older people. Third, meaningful risk-taking was essential to older peoples’ quality of life and enactment of their lived-identity. Finally, the meaning of anticipating falling was learned experientially through older peoples’ experience of falling or witnessing others experience falls. Understanding these key insights, service providers might seek to adopt a transformative learning approach to fall prevention that focuses on affirming an appreciative understanding of lived-identity, meaningful risk, and meaningful caution in older peoples’ lives. Erich Fromm’s distinction between having and being orientations to lived-identity may be used to provide insight into the enactment of such a transformative approach to fall prevention. [ir.lib.uwo.ca/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=12119&context=etd] N2 - The dissertation investigates the electoral phenomenon of the populist radical right (PRR) in the United States. The main venue for analysis is internal party competition within the conservative Republican Party for its nominations. The thesis draws extensively on European PRR literature, which has explored the roots of these parties’ electoral successes overseas, and applies insights gleaned to the American context. It is divided into three articles, each of which explores a Republican nomination campaign in-depth and applies lessons learned from the European literature to the American case. The first article, presented in chapter 2, examines the role of issue salience in Pat Buchanan’s 1996 bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Through a case study, content analysis of primary debates, and regression analysis of exit polls taken in New Hampshire, this article demonstrates that Pat Buchanan attempted to drive the salience of PRR issues, disproportionately attracted the votes of those who prioritized the issues he owned and finds no relationship between the source of candidate impressions and support for Buchanan. Chapter 3 covers Donald Trump’s groundbreaking 2016 primary campaign, focusing on the concept of convergence. The Western European literature demonstrates that the PRR succeeds when mainstream parties of the left and right converge. This chapter uses a case study approach to examine the rhetoric adopted by the Trump campaign, demonstrating that Trump ran a campaign attacking the Republican Party he was seeking to lead and offering an ideological alternative to the Republican mainstream. An analysis of exit poll data demonstrates that, despite his strong anti-Republican rhetoric, support for Trump was not associated with dissatisfaction with the Republican Party, a variable that better predicts support for Trump’s rival, Ted Cruz. Chapter 4 analyzes the appeal of PRR politics in the US after the election of Donald Trump. Specifically, I seek to explain how new media helps politicians representing the PRR secure support in Republican primaries. Using an online survey of 1052 Arizona Republicans in the lead-up to the August 2018 Senate primary, the article examines support for three candidates: Rep. Martha McSally, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and Kelli Ward, a physician. The findings highlight a bifurcation in the drivers for support of PRR candidacies: Skepticism of immigration drives the Arpaio vote, while use of social media news and belief in party convergence mobilize Ward’s support. The results demonstrate that support for PRR politicians in the Arizona primary is concentrated in two groups, anti-immigrant and anti-establishment, and that the anti-establishment voters are more likely to access news on social media. These findings indicate that social media news consumption does shape voter perceptions about mainstream parties favorably for the PRR. These three articles invoke theories derived at least in part from the study of the Western European populist radical right to the American context and provides mixed evidence for the portability of the frameworks. Though not all theoretically expected relationships are present, the dissertation demonstrates that there are important analogues between the American PRR and the European PRR and provides a crucial bridge between these largely distinct literatures. [helda.helsinki.fi/items/9f0d303d-52d7-46f2-8648-aeeaeff30a28] N2 - Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoitus on tutkia päiväkoti-ikäisten lasten vapaata leikkiä luovuuden kenttänä. Pääpaino tutkimuksessa on luovuudella, jota hahmotetaan yksilökeskeisestä, systeemisestä ja kehityksellisestä näkökulmasta. Lasten vapaan leikin merkitys nähdään sen kehitystehtävää palvelevassa tarkoituksessa. Vaikka leikin merkitys on yleisesti tunnustettu, varhaiskasvatuksen kentällä kaivataan syvempää teoreettista ymmärrystä siitä, jotta sitä voitaisiin tukea tehokkaammin. Tutkimuksen tulkinnallisena viitekehyksenä on sosiaalinen konstruktivismi, jonka suuntaamana havainoidaan merkitysten kielellistä rakentumista. N2 - The purpose of this research is to study preschool children's play as a field of creativity. The emphasis is on creativity, which is outlined from an individual-centered, systemic and developmental perspective. The importance of free play is seen for the purpose of serving its development task. Although the importance of play is generally recognized, the field of education requires a deeper theoretical understanding of how it can be supported more effectively. The study's interpretative framework is social constructivism, which is directed to the linguistic construction of meanings. The point of interest is what meanings are shared in the play, how the play is being constructed, and what kind of field childrens play is for creativity. The material of the study was videoed play of children aged 3-5 years and it was collected in a kindergarten in Vantaa, Finland, in the spring of 2017. The plays were videotaped in the children's normal play environment, and a few objects were introduced for the purpose of research, and the application of which was part of the research. The analysis was carried out as an analysis of the content of the play speech. The content and functions of the spoken language were studied, as well as the episodic structure of the play. According to the results, children's play appeared as a two-level functional and interactive entity, in which the outer >concrete worlds level< was at the service of the inner >imagination worlds level<. Smoothness of play was the central aim in action. Creativity appeared as experimenting together in the play, and previously learned and new experiences intertwined in a constructed and ever-reconstructing world of play. The play was mainly based on describing, naming, and expressing new ideas and its structure was episodic. These >building materials< of play were based on personal experiences, and on new ideas available in the play. Y1 - 2019 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Wen, Yahui T1 - Study on Marx’s Idea of Freedom, Master thesis, Marxist Philosophy, Northeast Petroleum University, Daqing, Heilongjiang, China 2023. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Since ancient Greece, philosophers have begun to study and explore freedom, and have defined freedom from different perspectives. Unlike other philosophers, Marx’s interpretation of freedom is based on human practical activity and criticizes freedom in capitalist society in a practical way of thinking. With people engaged in practical activities as the main body, human freedom is realized through practice. In Marx’s idea of freedom, the realization of human freedom and comprehensive development is the main thread running through it. No idea comes out of thin air, and so does Marx’s idea of freedom. Epicurus’ hedonism and the idea of freedom of the individual that is detached from fixation, Locke’s natural idea of freedom of man and nature, Rousseau’s idea of freedom in social opinion and the idea of freedom of the political state, Kant’s free will thought, Hegel’s dialectical idea of freedom, etc. laid the theoretical foundation for Marx’s idea of freedom. Marx’s idea of freedom from the initial appearance, to development, and then to perfection, did not come overnight, but went through a long process. The starting point of Marx’s idea of freedom was the reflection on reality triggered by the atomic deflection of Epicurus. In the process of its formation and development to perfection, it reflects the criticism and transcendence of freedom in capitalist society and the construction of freedom in communist society. From his critique of the censorship of books and newspapers, Marx proposed the freedom of the press and the press, which has a people’s character, is different from the freedom of industry, and is the privilege of human spiritual activities; in his critique of Powell’s political emancipation, he pointed out that political freedom should be liberated from religion, political freedom should be protected by law, and the realization of political freedom also requires the establishment of human rights; in the critique of alienated labor, he pointed out that labor freedom is the fundamental activity of man and the way of existence of man; in his critique of capitalist economic freedom, he pointed out that economic freedom is the realization of freedom in the economic field by people to get rid of the control of alien forces, and the realization of economic freedom cannot be separated from the development of productive forces, the abolition of private ownership and the distribution according to their own ability. Social freedom is the establishment of a true community, the realization of which entails the abolition of classes and the establishment of a union of free men. The highest state of human personality development is the concentrated embodiment of the all-round development of human freedom, and it is also the ultimate goal of Marx’s idea of freedom. Marx’s idea of freedom is very rich in connotation and of great value. Marx’s idea of freedom provided theoretical resources for the concept of freedom in the core values of socialism, and provided important value references for Fromm’s idea of freedom and the idea of human alienation in the Frankfurt School, and Marcuse’s theory of human and social development. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] >Babbitt< is the masterpiece of Sinclair Lewis, who was the first American winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The novel’s protagonist, Babbitt, has a prosperous life but feels miserable. He desires to live a different life by conducting some rebellious behaviors. However, in the end, he compromises and returns to his former life. Lewis explores human’s dilemma of freedom through the depiction of Babbitt’s life. Erich Fromm’s viewpoint of >escape from freedom< provides a new theoretical perspective to interpret Babbitt’s final return. Babbitt enjoys the freedom of wealth, but the price he pays for that freedom is the inevitable feeling of loneliness and powerlessness. However, the alienation in capitalist society blocks his way to overcome loneliness by pursuing positive freedom; he has no choice but to escape from freedom to obtain a sense of belonging and security. With Fromm’s theories, this thesis attempts to explain how Lewis explores the phenomenon of escaping from freedom in modern society. First, the thesis explores Babbitt’s three ways of escaping from freedom, that is, the three psychological mechanisms he adopts: authoritarianism, destructiveness, and automation conformity. Second, it explores the reasons for Babbitt’s escape from freedom, namely the alienation that exists in society. Third, from the perspective of man and society, this thesis explores how people could gain positive freedom in society. This thesis concludes that Babbitt is not just Babbitt but also represents thousands of people struggling with the dilemma of freedom. The writing of Babbitt’s escape from freedom embodies the novel’s social power and Sinclair Lewis’s responsibility and mission as a realist novelist. It not only helps people to get out of the dilemma of freedom but also provides enlightenment for the problems that may arise in the development of modern society. Shodno istraživanju, potrošnja igra ključnu ulogu u stvaranju i održavanju interakcijskih ritualnih lanaca, doprinoseći društvenoj solidarnosti i koheziji. N2 - The master's thesis deals with connection between consumer habits, socioeconomic determinants and the social life of students at the University of Zagreb. In the theoretical part, the concepts of consumer society and consumer behavior are analyzed with an emphasis on R. Collins' theory of interactional ritual chains. Consumption, as a daily activity, becomes a social process, shaping interactions and emotional energies among students. The social environment encourages consumer behavior in the direction of higher consumption, but also implies interaction with others. Furthermore, in the empirical part of the research, the sample is represented by students of various study programs at the University of Zagreb. The measuring instrument used in the research is a questionnaire consisting of questions about the socioeconomic status, consumption habits and social activities of the students of the University of Zagreb. The data was collected online, by posting questionnaires on social networks such as Facebook and Instagram. Participation was anonymous and voluntary, and the collected data were analyzed using quantitative methods. The research was conducted during March and April 2024, and the results showed a statistically significant connection between socioeconomic determinants, consumer habits and the social life of students at the University of Zagreb. According to the results, students adapt their spending habits to financial activities, often using student discounts and setting spending priorities. Likewise, social activities are related to the spending habits of students, and one of the more popular ones is going to cafes. According to research, consumption plays a key role in creating and maintaining interactive ritual chains, contributing to social solidarity and cohesion. N2 - It has become a trend in the academia to study Byron, the great Romantic poet and his poems inter-disciplinarily. Most scholars at both home and abroad have carried out inter-disciplinary studies on Byron’s poetry from the perspectives of religion, history, politics, philosophy, ecology, science and visual arts. Moreover, some scholars have also employed psychology and psychoanalysis to approach Byron’s poetry against the backdrop of their rapid development. However, many scholars devote to exploring Byron’s personal diseases and the therapeutic function of Byron’s poetry to his own diseases but ignoring the other therapeutic functions. This status quo provides a space for the further exploration on the mutiple therapeutic functions in Byron’s poetry. Therefore, based on the psychologist and psychoanalyst, Freud’s theory of individual therapy and the social psychologist Fromm’s theory of social therapy, this study analyzes the therapeutic functions of Byron’s poetry to himself, the British society and the oppressed countries at that time. This research not only expands the objects of Byron’s poetry therapy, but also analyzes the therapeutic effect in reality, which makes a breakthrough in the paradigm of literary therapy. Therefore it has significant meanings on studies of Byron’s poetry and literary therapy. This thesis is composed of six parts: introduction, four chapters and conclusion. The introduction, which gives a brief introduction to Byron and his poetry, synthesizes the relevant literatures of the inter-disciplinary research of Byron’s poetry at home and abroad, and elaborates the central argument, research methodology and the research significance.– The first chapter briefly describes the history and classification of literary therapy and gives some examples. Moreover, the first chapter introduces in detail Freud's theory of individual therapy and Fromm’s theory of social therapy, which lays the theoretical foundation for this study.– The second chapter employs Freud’s theory of individual therapy to study Byron’s self-treatment in his poetry. This chapter analyzes Byron’s mental diseases and finds that Byron treats his mental diseases by talking with readers and transferring his emotions to others in his poetry. Under the treatment of his poetry, Byron gets the emotional comfort and achieve his self-realization in the fields of poetry and revolution.– The third chapter adopts Fromm’s theory of social therapy to explore the therapeutic function of Byron’s poetry to the British society. This chapter makes an in-depth analysis of the diseases in the British society at that time and the process of Byron’s treatment of the diseases through Oriental writing and humorously satirical writing in his poetry, and concludes that the therapeutic effect of Byron’s poetry on the British society lies in that it helps to improve the British society to some extent.– The fourth chapter also uses Fromm’s theory of social therapy to investigate the therapeutic function of Byron’s poetry to the oppressed countries such as Italy and Greece at that time. This chapter analyzes the >diseases< of the oppressed countries and finds that Byron treats them in his poetry through his glorification of ancient civilization and heroic deeds. And the ultimate therapeutic effect is to inspire the people of the oppressed countries to fight for freedom.– The last part is the conclusion, which is the summary and generalization of the whole thesis. It is shown in the conclusion that Byron’s poetry cures the diseases of Byron himself, the British society and the oppressed countries to a certain extent.
