[Online ISSN 2459-6329] [hrcak.srce.hr/file/379345] N2 - In >The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future< (1987), Riana Eisler asserts that the Neolithic societies used to follow a >partnership model< of civilization that rested on egalitarian and matrifocal values. However, over time, it gave way to the current >dominator model< that focuses on masculine ideals of superiority and dominance. It is her genuine belief that a historical transition from earlier idyllic to more aggressive cultures can be reversed in order for the matriarchal society to be constructed again in the future. This theoretical framework will be employed in the comparative analysis of two modern Serbian novels that seek a vision of feminist utopia at the end of the 20th century: Mirjana Novakovic's >The Danube’s Apocrypha< (1996) and Judita Salgo’s >A Voyage to Birobijan< (1997). Novakovic‘s short novel describes an uprising threatening to overturn the social order in the near future and has a female narrator who shares with the reader the testimony concerning a secret com-munity of women, which is >silently awaiting< its Goddess to appear. Salgo’s posthumous, unfinished novel partly reads as a proclamation of a new religious doctrine about the female Christ figure named Messiana and her ardent acolytes who spread the word about a hideaway which would serve to shelter the vulnerable and the endangered. Though the original intention of both Salgo and Novakovic was to sup-port the destitute and unprotected women of the Balkans by creating the characters and the plots reminiscent of their plight, their writing turned into an unparalleled quest for the continent of the female, a very particular Utopia. The following analysis is also based on the analytical approaches of Bloom, Eagleton, Fromm, Loentz and Pike. [Online ISSN 1848-2317] [doi.org/10.21464/sp34109] N2 - In this paper, I attempt to apply Fromm’s notion of spontaneity to Foucault’s system of repression. It tends to shed new light on Foucault’s problem of freedom, using the notion which Foucault largely underestimates. Difficulties of such an application arise because of differences in Fromm’s and Foucault’s starting points in analysing the causes of human submission throughout history. Nonetheless, there is a point of convergence: Foucault and Fromm both describe a type of individual’s escape towards the institutions of power. Whether these institutions are highly formalised or not, highly complex or rather simple, dispersed or centralised, they designate repression on account of their lack of spontaneity. [Online ISSN 2459-5160] [hrcak.srce.hr/file/226914] N2 - This paper deals with the construction of the postmodern identity of Jack Gladney, the main character in Don DeLillo’s >White Noise< (1985). Employing (post)modern, social psychology, and psychoanalytic theories of Zygmunt Bauman, Erich Fromm, Jean Baudrillard, and Gilles Lipovetsky, it analyzes the construction of Gladney’s character through his social roles as professor, husband, and consumer in the narrow sense of the word in order to deduce that his consumerist practices have spread to all aspects of his life. This reading reveals a new interpretation of Gladney’s fear of death; it shows that Gladney’s thanatophobia represents a consequence of his atheistic worldview. Namely, unable to find a haven in religion, he unsuccessfully seeks the meaning of life and death elsewhere, mainly in consumerism, which is identified as the source of his alienation from himself, people, and God. This paper suggests that numerous problems of postmodern life are caused by the lack of faith in God and proposes a conclusion that religion itself could be the answer to the difficulties faced by postmodern individuals with fragmented identities such as Jack Gladney. Man for Himself< as a Free Creative Being of Praxis] JF - Metodički Ogledi, Vol. 20, No. 2, pp. 79-96. N2 - The understanding of alienated man who, during the course of historical development, gains increasingly more freedom but also feels more isolated from the nature and other people, in works of prominent praxis-thinker Gajo Petrović is connected to humanistic values and dynamic psychology. When he directs his attention to Erich Fromm and his concept of man for himself, Petrović seeks answers to questions on what aspects of Fromm’s work were interesting for philosophy of his days as well as for philosophy in future. Petrović is interested in Fromm’s research on roots of escape from freedom in human nature and contemporary society, as well as in the possibility of freeing the man from the burden put by himself. Gajo Petrović uses the concepts of human nature and alienation in widening and deepening philosophical research on human, with the goal of offering the solution to core problems of existence and human relations. One of the meeting points of Gajo Petrović and Erich Fromm is found in the gap between human essence and real, practical existence. The central place of philosophy of both Petrović and Fromm belongs to man, his nature, and contradictions he faces as the creative being of praxis. Another common point between two authors is the search for the answer to the question: Should practical reason be used again and how, i.e. should practical reason simply continue where philosophical concept of alienated man has stopped? Will the research on alienation and de-alienation finally rehabilitate the thought on Man who, unfortunately, is not what he is, and should be what he has to be?
