TY - JOUR A1 - Layton, Lynne T1 - Erich Fromm: Ancestor of Social Psychoanalytic Practice JF - Psychoanalytic Inquiry, Routledge, Vol. 44 (No. 1, 2024), pp. 026-036. N2 - Erich Fromm offered two key psychoanalytic concepts that bridge the psychic and the social: social unconscious and social character. In his view, these concepts are not only critical for understanding socio-historical phenomena but also ought to inform psychoanalytic clinical practice such that it might resist unconsciously encouraging patients to adapt to inequitable social conditions. This essay pays tribute to Fromm’s thinking while elaborating some of the differences between Fromm’s understanding of social unconscious/social character and my own. I argue that >social unconscious< does not quite capture the dynamic and conflictual nature of unconscious process, the ongoing conflict that social demands for conformity create in subject formation. To address that conflict, I propose the bridging concept of normative unconscious processes, processes that are always in conflict with counter-normative resistances. Points of both conflict and dissociation are precisely where analysts can challenge the psychic effects of oppressive social norms. Further, while agreeing with Fromm that analyzing social character ought to be central to clinical work, I argue that various and overlapping systemic oppressions – e.g. racism, heterosexism, classism – create, in any given society, multiple social characters and not just one dominant type. In agreement with Fromm’s argument that analysts themselves need to reckon with their own social character, I stress the importance for all of us to be as aware as possible of our own identity investments and social locations within unequal and overlapping power hierarchies. How are crises and loss of orientation related to hate? Can a society be sick? How are Izzeldin’s attitude and Fromm’s theory of a productive character orientation connected and how is Izzeldin’s or Fromm’s offer of orientation to be judged against the background of crises and conflicts in the students’ lifeworld? Insights from Social Identity Theory, London and New York (Routledge) 2024, 251 pp. N2 - The Psychology of Collective Narcissism is a ground-breaking text that presents a new theory of collective narcissism, a belief that exaggerated greatness of one’s own group should be but is not sufficiently appreciated by others. The book presents this concept against the background of social identity theory and research. It explores antecedent as well as social and political consequences of collective narcissism. The author discusses how this burgeoning theory and research can help to elucidate a wide range of psychological dynamics involved in pressing societal issues, such as the declining appeal of democracy, increasing populism, decreasing social solidarity, increasing societal polarization and prejudice, intergroup hostility and political violence, social inequality, and fake news and belief in conspiracy theories. Also referring to societal problems exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, this highly topical work explores socially shared beliefs as risk factors when predicting responses to crises and highlights conditions in which collective narcissism can be expected. The author also reviews research on interventions reducing the link between collective narcissism, prejudice, and retaliatory intergroup hostility focusing on her recent research on mindfulness. This is a valuable read for academics and students in psychology and the social sciences, those interested in societal processes as well as professionals dealing with the impact of collective narcissism. N2 - Erich Fromm is not generally associated with policy positions and politics. Yet, Fromm was an early proponent of guaranteed income as an important practical entitlement necessary if greater human freedoms were to be realized. The article traces the development of the idea of basic (or guaranteed income) in US social movement history going back to the 1960s and including the writings of Erich Fromm on this topic. It argues that the concept of guaranteed income flows easily from, and is consonant with, Fromm’s humanistic philosophy overall. Four reasons are offered, including those that are politically, ethically and pragmatically oriented, as to why providing basic income to all citizens has major advantages over the kind of economic precarity and anxieties that many people currently experience. Lastly, after making a multi-dimensional case for guaranteed income, the article responds to a common objection – namely, if basic income became universally available, people would not wish to work. Quite to the contrary, and as empirical experiments have shown, Fromm’s ideas suggest that guaranteed income would encourage people to work with increased commitment and passion and that more positive than negative consequences would ensue from the concept becoming a widespread and much more generally accepted public policy. A Contemporary Introduction, London and New York (Routledge) 2024, 152 pp. N2 - In this passionate volume, Sandra Buechler introduces Erich Fromm's groundbreaking contributions to psychoanalysis, sociology, philosophy, political action, and social criticism. Buechler explores how Fromm's thinking and interdisciplinary vision are able to frame discussions of dilemmas in contemporary society. She offers a comprehensive biography of Fromm, before delving into his role as analyst, author, activist, sociologist and philosopher. From her own experience as a psychoanalyst, and from the testimony of Fromm's many ardent followers, Buechler illuminates Fromm's capacity to inspire. She considers how Fromm's writing equips students, beginning clinicians and more experienced professionals to understand what can give meaning to their efforts on behalf of troubled individuals, their riven communities, and the wider world. Assuming no prior knowledge of Fromm's work, this books offers students in clinical and social psychology, sociology, and philosophy a vital insight into his theoretical contributions. N2 - Erich Fromm’s book >The Sane Society< was published in 1955, the second year of President’s Eisenhower’s administration, but had a profound impact on the ideas and agendas of social activists during the 60s and 70s, including this author. Its central theses were that the middle-class prosperity characteristic of that era masked a >pathology of normalcy,< and that capitalism transforms active citizens into passive consumers by compelling people to fill their material needs in ways that are at variance with their existential or human needs. The result is a dramatic diminution of their critical faculties, an atrophy of conscience, and the proliferation of a >marketing character,< a kind of alienated, hedonistic lifestyle whose emptiness is palliated by the consumption of ever larger quantities of consumer goods. Fromm’s analysis still rings true in some respects, but the middle-class prosperity and bland uniformity of opinion he critiqued began to wane in the late 1970s, gradually giving way to sharp extremes of poverty and wealth. The resulting political polarization has now reached a critical point, where the future of American democracy – or what little is left of it – is now in peril. So, as we approach 2025, Fromm’s analysis of America in the mid-20th century must be updated and modified to fit the contours of contemporary social realities. In so doing, however, we discover that American society is even more alienated, more atomized and fragile than it was in Fromm’s day. [Traduction: www.google translator, 3/2025] Y1 - 2024 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Liu, Ting T1 - Towards Thingness: A Study of Fromm’s Objectfication Critique, Master thesis, Philosophy, Henan University, Zhengzhou and Kaifeng, Henan, China 2024. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Erich Fromm was nourished by both Western epistemological aesthetics and Eastern Zen culture, and the particularity of his theoretical horizon prompted his >objectification< thought to have an opportunity to turn into >thingness<. Specifically, during his youth creation, Fromm’s critical thought of >objectification< was influenced by Marx’s alienated labor theory, Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis and Frankfurt School’s instrumental reason, which was his core theory of exploring modern people’s survival dilemma, criticizing modern morbid society and constructing a sound society in the future. In his later years, influenced by Zen culture, the thinking of >Prajna intuition<, the >Buer< view of >true Buddha nature< and the concept of >pure subjectivity< made it form a theoretical horizon with both Eastern and Western characteristics. Firstly, the hidden >objects< in Fromm’s texts contains the evolution of the critical connotation of >materialization<. >Humans< are always entangled with >objects<, and Fromm claims that human >alienation< origi¬nates from the >ambivalence of existence< and the alien recognition of >objects< under absolute rationality. In order to get rid of this shackle, Fromm divided the modern world into >human-based society< and >material-based society< with the help of >survival mode< theory. On this basis, tracing the change of the position of >thing< in different periods, that is, from >alienation< to >symbiosis<, presents the conflict and paradox between Fromm’s philosophical tradition and personal theory. Specifically, the main opportunity for the reconstruction of Fromm’s materialization critical thought comes from existentialism. Dissatisfied with the disenchantment of things since modern times, Heidegger’s discussion on physical nature is to find the truth of existence. Although his discussion on physical nature loses the sense of matter of concrete things, it inspired Fromm to form a dialogue relationship between Zen Buddhism and existentialism with the help of Heidegger’s >Let Things Be<. Compared with psychoanalytic treatment methods, he believes that existentialism and Zen have a certain internal consistency in the treatment of people’s >modern diseases<, that is, only in the >enlightenment< realm of Zen can we ask about >things of existence<. The core is to call for the ability to coexist harmoniously between people and things. In fact Fromm’s hidden thought of materiality shows an equal view of people/things which pays attention to the dynamic connectivity between people and things in addition to the appearance and object attributes of things. The attention to the >relationship< between man and things is just the revision of the traditional epistemological philosophy that separates phenomenon/essence, subject/object. It can be said that behind the two diametrically opposite connotations of >things<, >physical nature< and >materialization<, is the struggle between >epistemology< and >ontology<. Finally, Zen culture becomes the theoretical resource of Fromm’s >thingness<. Influenced by Suzuki and Sigmund Freud, Fromm used psychoanalytic concepts such as >consciousness< and >unconsciousness< to explain Zen Buddhism, and thought that the nature of people/things was dominated by >cosmic unconsciousness<, and only >Prajna intuition< could reach physical properties thought. Moreover, the fragmentation of Fromm’s concept of >objects< implies the crisis of his view of >objectification<, and there is a turn of >thingness<. The depiction of >objects< in Fromm’s texts reveals a divergence between >Object< and >Thing<. On the one hand, Fromm understands >Object< as objectified entities that serve as >ready-at hand< in his articles; on the other hand, >Thing< have a hidden side: >Thingness< implies an existential thinking mode which is different from the traditional dualistic >isolation-distinction< thinking mode. However, Fromm’s ethical interpretation of Zen leads to a mixed >thingness< thought. The Eastern concept of >experience< migrating to a Western context transforms the >pure subjectivity< of Zen into a bifurcated >relative subjectivity<, causing a distortion in >experiential< art. Yet, this turn towards >thingness< provides an opportunity for dialogues and communication between Eastern and Western discourses on >objects<, exploring the possibility of constructing an ontology of >thingness<. This concerns not only the theoretical transformation of poetic paradigms but also, in today’s real-world context, the need to establish a new, more ecologically aware mode of coexistence among humans, nature, and technological thingness in the future world. This is because the ‘dots’ still have to be ‘connected’ between macro-level phenomena (here, the therapeutic ethos and cognitive capitalism), and micro-level phenomena (in this case, cognitive abilities). In this essay, we use Fromm’s notion of social character to theorise dialectally about the interaction between these macro and micro-level phenomena. Doing so enables us to examine how the macro/micro interaction fosters to adoption of cognitive enhancement in the context of work, and what kinds of consequences might emerge from this. We propose the psycho-emotional deficitisation of workers as a central consequence of the aforementioned interaction, and define it as an internalised version of external ideals of what it means to be a productive worker under cognitive capitalism, which over time generates and reinforces the affective experience of being deficient. Our theorising around socially patterned defects of a cognitive kind has crucial ramification for our understanding of technology-mediated affective control at work and how human–technology interactions shape the subjectivities of workers towards greater self-inferiorisation vis-à-vis the perceived superiority of technology. We close by foreshadowing avenues for future research. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Fromm and Marcuse, as Psychoanalytic-Marxist theorists, constructed their artistic ideal of liberating human nature and improving society on the basis of Freud’s theory of Eros. Fromm attempted to establish a harmonious and united community of self and others with the art of love. However, his biased interpretation of Freud and the fantasy of universal love led to an incomplete social critique, thus turning the art of love into an idealistic dilemma. Marcuse emphasized the emancipatory function of love and art, which is regarded as an important opportunity to break through the repression of human nature by the principle of reason. However, his artistic ideal has also exposed its inherent contradictions at both theoretical and practical levels. Ultimately, it is reduced to an aesthetic utopia. Facing the dilemmas mentioned above, Lacan’s analysis and critique of the imaginative dimensions of Eros and art in his seminars have provided some inspirations. Under his influence, Žižek developed an ideological critique method entitled >going-through-the-fantasy<, which reminds people to be alert to the combination of psychoanalysis and Marxism. [Translation: www.cnki.net, 9/2024] Y1 - 2024 ER - TY - GEN A1 - Ma, Xiaoling T1 - Study of Fromm’s Theory of Human Nature, Master thesis, Philosophy, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, Shanxi, China 2024. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] The two World Wars and the rise of fascism inspired Erich Fromm’s understanding of human nature, society, and the complexity of human behavior, leading him to explore the roots of destructive tendencies within individuals and society. In his exploration of human nature, Fromm drew heavily from Freud’s psychoanalytic theory and Marx’s anthropology. Unlike Freud, who abstractly discussed human nature based on the unconscious, Fromm, influenced by Marx, emphasized the interaction between individuals and society and the ways in which society shapes the individual. Fromm’s theory of human nature is grounded in what he termed >basic human needs.< He considered these needs crucial for understanding human nature and essential for the development of healthy individuals and societies. To this end, Fromm extensively elucidated the existential dilemma faced by humans, which he termed >existential dichotomy.< Building upon this foundation, he delved deeply into the basic needs and motivations driving human behavior, thus achieving a dialectical and profound understanding of human nature. The contradiction between life and death reveals an inherent tension within humanity, stemming from the desire for self-preservation and awareness of one’s limitations. The tension between the brevity of life and the infinite potential of human nature highlights the inherent conflict between finite existence and the limitless possibilities within human nature. He also explored the complex relationship between the individual’s pursuit of uniqueness and authentic self and the feelings of loneliness and isolation, demonstrating the complexity of human nature. By studying the impact of capitalism, consumer culture, and the fear of freedom, Fromm emphasized the social challenges individuals face in pursuing personal growth. He argued that human nature is not fixed or predetermined but rather a product of social and historical influences. Fromm emphasized the malleability of character and behavior, influenced by processes of socialization, cultural values, and the economic systems prevalent in specific societies. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of Fromm’s theory of human nature necessitates expanding its social dimension, closely examining its connections with social character, social unconscious, alienation, and freedom. Critically exploring the influence of these factors on human nature, Fromm proposed a vision of a healthy society that ensures the full development of human nature, advocating for both the cultivation of rationality and love and comprehensive transformation of existing society. Compared to contemporary thinkers, Fromm’s theory of human nature exhibits distinctive dialectical and proactive subjectivity. However, due to a lack of profound economic analysis regarding the societal factors influencing human nature, Fromm’s theory inevitably reflects a certain idealism. An objective understanding and evaluation of Fromm’s theory of human nature must acknowledge two points: firstly, it advances Marx’s exploration of human essence and alienation from a rational social perspective to an irrational biological level, enriching and expanding Marx’s anthropological thought; secondly, in discussing the biological aspects of human nature, influenced by Marx’s materialist perspective and dialectical method, Fromm’s understanding of human biological attributes largely overcomes the abstraction inherent in Freudian thought based on psychological research methods and the limitations of contemporary thinkers in understanding human nature. However, Fromm’s theory of human nature also has its limitations. His humanistic vision shares much with humanistic and positive psychology but differs in important respects. Centrally, Fromm’s notion of emancipation emphasises both individual and societal components. He believes independent and authentic relationships are a higher expression of human potential and bring true fulfilment. Fromm identifies a creative, non-alienated character orientation that includes a ‘humanistic conscience’. Comparing authoritarian and humanistic consciences, he emphasises human potential and social and individual interdependence. Personal development must also drive social change, and vice versa. Fromm’s perspective rejects zero-sum, either/or thinking about social change vis-à-vis individual flourishing. For him, both are important, and they are related. Following Fromm’s example, the Left should stress that individualistic societies cannot satisfy individual needs. Self-fulfilment requires fairness, community and shared personal experiences. In a world full of challenges and opportunities, guarding children's hearts means that we have to create a safe, warm and loving environment for children to grow up in, so that they can maintain that initial goodness and bravely face the challenges of the future. Recently, several incidents of bullying in schools have aroused widespread concern in the community, sounding an alarm to educators and all sectors of society. Bullying in schools is not a >small fight< between children, but may become a nightmare that affects a child's life. As the starting point of a child's growth, how should early childhood education provide a good educational foundation for children and build a solid human foundation? Is there a way to help every child grow up in the sunshine and write their own splendor? Buckle up the first button of life. The famous psychologist Fromm positioned the family as >the factory for manufacturing human character<, and what kind of person a child becomes depends, to some extent, on his or her parents. The happy growth of a child begins with the cultivation of a sense of life. Some children's behavioral deviations due to lack of awareness of the value of life should be taken seriously by parents. The significance of the existence of parents is not only to meet the basic needs of children, but also when children think of their parents, they will be full of strength and feel warmth inside, so that they have the courage and ability to overcome difficulties. Parents should convey to their children an attitude of reverence for life, help them recognize the value and meaning of life, and cultivate in them a sense of responsibility and commitment to life; tell them to respect not only their own lives and the lives of others, but also the lives of plants and animals, and to live in harmony with all kinds of life on earth; and set up the concept of never giving up on life under any circumstances. In order to make up for the >rupture< and eliminate fascism, Reich and Fromm inherited the subjectivity principle of Western Marxism, reformed Freud’s psychoanalysis, and used personality structure as a >subjective factor of history< to analyze the reasons for the emergence of fascism, thus achieving the combination of Marxism and psychoanalysis, providing a new psychoanalytic perspective for Marxism. However, although they all emphasized supplementing Marxism with psychoanalysis, in terms of specific revolutionary strategies, they still regarded psychological reasons as the root of fascism, which resulted in theoretical flaws that deviated from subjective factors such as historical materialism and exaggerated ideology. Erich Fromm, as a Freudian theorist and clinician, is uniquely positioned to address these issues. Fromm is a politically radical thinker who can help psychoanalysis think about society and social injustice beyond the clinical context while avoiding the dangers of excessively orthodox left-wing thinking that risks taking the field away from its core mission. Fromm can help psychoanalysis avoid what we are calling the >Peterson problem,< which is partly the result of provocative and extreme ideas in institutions and psychoanalytic publications that create reputational problems for the field. The >Peterson problem< brings new attention to the political bias of left-liberal authoritarians inside the profession, who focus on changing society rather than healing individuals and neglect audiences outside the liberal university and highly educated classes and thus create space for polarizing figures like psychologist Jordan Peterson to fill the gap. Peterson’s fame and influence serves as a lightning rod for the wider critique of left leaning political and cultural currents in psychoanalysis. Fromm can act as a role model as well as provide the intellectual resources for responding to these challenges. Y1 - 2024 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Byrd, Dustin J. Freedom, within psychological research today, is a neglected, even slightly old-fashioned term. In this paper, we explore the practical, normative, and political dimensions of freedom as a psychological concept. We begin by tracing out key understandings of freedom from political theory, before discussing how thinkers such as Skinner, Maslow, Fromm, and May understood the different dimensions of freedom. We then discuss a governmental perspective on freedom, drawn from the work of Nikolas Rose, before finally turning to the sociocultural psychology of L. S. Vygotsky. We contend that freedom is not merely the absence of constraints but a complex interplay between agency, responsibility, and social connections. Our paper argues that the modern emphasis on negative freedom, characterized by reduced interference and obligations, has resulted in a paradoxical situation where individuals feel overwhelmed and seek escape from freedom. By revisiting the insights of Erich Fromm and other scholars, we emphasize the need for positive freedom, which involves voluntary connections with others and active participation in shaping society. We argue that psychology’s mandate should be to facilitate the exploration of alternative avenues that lead to flourishing and self-actualization. Her novel >2017< won the 2006 Russian Booker Prize and was nomi¬nated for the >Great Book Award< of the National Literature Award. Erich Fromm (Erich Fromm) combined the process of individualization with the development of social history to explore the dilemma of human society, reveal the alienated state of individuals, and gradually formed his own alienation theory. Slav¬nikova's novel >2017< presents us with a real and complex social picture with its profound social insight and attention to real problems. By describing the mutual use, indifference and alienation between people and themselves and between people, the author makes us understand more deeply the fragility and instability of social relations in modern society. This novel has not only won the praise of readers, but also provided us with profound thinking and enlightenment. It can be said that Fromm's alienation theory is highly con¬sistent with the theme of Slavnikova's novel. They both focus on the alienation between people and them¬selves and between people in modern society, and try to explore the causes of alienation in their own ways. Therefore, this paper uses Fromm's alienation theory to analyze the alienation phenomenon of social relations in the novel from the two aspects of self-alienation and alienation of interpersonal relationships, and explores the causes of the alienation phenomenon of social relations. Finally, the research significance of this paper is summarized. This paper takes Slavnikova's novel >2017< as the research object, and consists of three parts: introduction, three chapters and conclusion. The introduction introduces Slavnikova's life and creation, classifies and summarizes the research overview of the novel >2017< at home and abroad, and clarifies the research methods and innovations of this paper. The first chapter of the text is an overview of Fromm's alienation theory. It first introduces Fromm's alienation theory as a whole, and then focuses on Fromm's social rela¬tionship alienation theory from the two aspects of self-alienation and interpersonal relationship alienation, providing a theoretical basis for the text analysis in the following text. The second chapter of the text combines Fromm's alienation theory to deeply explore the social relationship alienation phenomenon in the novel >2017<, and analyzes and discusses the self-alienation phenomenon in the novel: emotional aliena¬tion and behavioral alienation, and interpersonal relationship alienation phenomenon: gender relations and parent-child relations. The third chapter of the text deeply analyzes the causes of social relationship alienation in the previous text from the two aspects of personal loneliness and the dissolution of traditional family ethics. The conclusion is based on Fromm's alienation theory in the first chapter, combined with the analysis of the social relationship alienation phenomenon in the novel in the second chapter and the causes of the alienation phenomenon in the third chapter, and concludes that Slavnikova deeply reflects on the living conditions of people in modern society, and reminds us to pay attention to our true inner feelings and avoid falling into trouble due to self-alienation. At the same time, she also called on people to re-examine their relationships with others, return to real emotional exchanges, and establish healthy and harmonious interpersonal relationships. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Annie Baker(1981 –), a contemporary American playwright, focuses on representing isolation in her plays. Particularly, >The Aliens<(2010), >The Flick<(2013), and >John<(2015) represent the existential isolation characterized by individuals’ separation from the world, and the interpersonal isolation characterized by isolation from other individuals. Through portraying characters’ endeavors to form genuine connections to cope with isolation, these three plays explore the possibility and challenges of responding to isolation, thereby reflecting Baker’s contemplation of the impact and causes of isolation as well as the possibility for people to cope with isolation. Accordingly, drawing on Erich Fromm’s and Irvin Yalom’s theoretical thoughts about isolation, this thesis examines Baker’s representation of isolation in >The Aliens<, >The Flick<, and >John< to elucidate her evolving perception of the issue of isolation from optimism to pessimism, The first chapter of this thesis provides an overview of the research, including an introduction to Annie Baker, literature review, research questions, thesis statement, theoretical framework, and research significance. Chapter two explores the representation of isolation in >The Aliens<. By depicting characters’ experience of existential isolation caused by their status of outsiders in society and their endeavors to address isolation through positive affirmation of status, creative art, and brotherly love, Baker expresses her optimistic belief in people’s possibility of confronting and coping with isolation. Chapter three unveils characters’ experience of isolation stemming from a lack of love in >The Flick<. Through presenting the progression of characters’ relationships and designing dramatic conflicts about egotistical interests, Baker expresses her mixed views on isolation, encapsulating both hope for genuine connections to cope with isolation, and doubt of its possibility because of the hindrance of egotism. Chapter four scrutinizes the representation of isolation in >John<. Through an exploration of the immature love exhibited by a couple, this chapter reveals their existential and interpersonal isolation, and implies that marital bonds perpetuated by >immature love< and patriarchal norms inexorably lead individuals to isolation with no apparent solution. The last chapter draws a conclusion based on the analysis from chapter two to four. This study argues that Baker’s representation of isolation indicates her evolving perception of isolation from optimism to pessimism, namely, from believing in the potential for people to establish genuine connections to doubting this possibility and contending that people are trapped in isolation without ways out. This change underscores Baker’s deepening insights into the nature of isolation intricately linked with social, economic, and cultural factors. The evolvement of Baker’s perception reflects her ongoing contemplation of this existential concern, highlighting the formidable challenges individuals face in establishing connections and coping with isolation. It also signals Baker’s poignant recognition of complexity and difficulty in addressing the profound challenge of isolation, which can inspire people to reflect on the ways of addressing isolation. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Jerome David Salinger(1919–2010)is a highly influential writer in post-World War II America, and his writings and philosophies greatly influenced American literature and society. Published in 1953, >Nine Stories< is Salinger’s sole compilation of short stories. Each story was released around the same time as >The Catcher in the Rye<, showcasing Salinger’s peak of creativity. In >Nine Stories<, Salinger portrays the post-World War II loneliness experienced by individuals, which reflects Salinger’s contemplation on the human psyche, giving >Nine Stories< a distinctive significance. However, a limited amount of research has been done by domestic scholars on >Nine Stories<. Most concentrate on analyzing one specific story rather than conducting comprehensive studies. Current research primarily centers on character alienation and mental trauma, with a minimal exploration of the theme of loneliness among the protagonists. This gap leaves room for further examination in this thesis. This thesis primarily examines the writing of loneliness depicted in >Nine Stories< in the following three aspects through the lens of Fromm and Rollo May’s loneliness theory, Fromm’s theory of love, and Zen Buddhism. Through his portrayal of the pervasive loneliness, Salinger explores how the characters in the stories confront loneliness and ultimately come to terms with and embrace it. The first chapter delves into the ubiquity of loneliness. Firstly, some characters face barriers in connecting with others due to a lack of empathy, resulting in >mirror contact< and silence in communication, ultimately leading to a sense of mental loneliness. Secondly, the sour love, alienated kinship, and insincere friendship also contribute to emotional loneliness among the characters. Lastly, feelings of >existential loneliness< arise from a lack of personal security, blurred identities, and a perception of life’s nothingness. Through exploring the roots and manifestations of loneliness, this chapter posits that loneliness permeates the stories. The second chapter examines the protagonists’ struggle with loneliness through self-abandonment. Initially, they adopt a >formulaic< and >radar-type< persona to assimilate themselves to combat loneliness. Subse¬quently, they confront loneliness by distorting themselves by forming masochistic dependencies on others and achieving sadistic associations with others. Ultimately, they dissolve their preoccupation with loneliness through self-paralysis and self-destruction, attempting to fight loneliness in this way. The chapter concludes that sacrificing one’s identity to combat loneliness ultimately leads to increased misery and loneliness, suggesting that this approach is short-lived and ineffective. In the third chapter, unlike some protagonists, who fight loneliness with >self-abandonment<, others coexist with loneliness through sincere love and self-improvement. On the one hand, people correctly understand loneliness by caring for and understanding each other, diluting the feeling of loneliness through mutual respect and tolerance, and giving themselves and others the courage to accept loneliness through the power of love and sincerity. On the other hand, people coexist with loneliness by accepting their true selves and contemplating loneliness from a Zen perspective. By arguing that coexistence with loneliness ends in empowering, this chapter argues that embracing love and accepting one’s true self can reconcile with loneliness and no longer be distracted by loneliness. Through the analysis of the preceding chapters, this thesis concludes that Salinger’s portrayal of loneliness in >Nine Stories< vividly illustrates the predicament of the characters and their ongoing struggle against loneliness. Furthermore, it suggests that the most effective approach to overcoming loneliness is embracing and coming to terms with it through genuine love. >Nine Stories< mirrors Salinger’s personal experiences with loneliness and serves as a commentary on the spiritual crisis in reality. It urges readers to address their loneliness constructively. Salinger’s contemplation on loneliness imbues >Nine Stories< with depth and offers potential solutions for those grappling with loneliness. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] John Updike (1932–2009) one of the most famous contemporary American realist writers, was born in Pennsylvania, USA, and graduated from Harvard University. Updike began his writing career in 1958. During his writing career, Updike was awarded two Pulitzer Prizes and two O. Henry Prizes, and he achie¬ved outstanding accomplishments in the field of literary creation. Updike’s literary works are concerned with the fate of people from all classes, especially the ordinary people. Updike believes that the situation of the ordinary people is a reflection of social reality. >The Centaur< is a novel with an ordinary individual as the protagonist. >The Centaur< is Updike’s third work. It was published in 1963 and won the American National Book Award. The novel mainly portrays the protagonist George Caldwell’s process of struggling with life’s dilemma. In The Centaur, Caldwell faces a dilemma of both material and spirit. However, Caldwell does not despair but works hard to change himself, and successfully overcomes alienation. The title of the novel >The Centaur< is a tribute to Caldwell by Updike. Updike uses the story that Centaur sacrifices himself in Greek mythology as a metaphor, and regards the ordinary people who overcome difficulties in modern society as heroes. This thesis is divided into five parts. The introduction provides an overview of John Updike’s life, domestic and foreign research status of >The Centaur< and the theory of alienation. Chapter one interprets the alienation behavior of the protagonist Caldwell in the novel >The Centaur<. Facing the reality that he is powerless to change, Caldwell suppresses his pain, which leads him to a somatization disorder and also causes him to escape reality through fantasy. In addition, Caldwell is anxious about his value as a father and as a husband. As a teacher, Caldwell is negative to students, indifferent to colleagues and he is fearful of the principal’s authority. He is unable to handle difficult situations that arise at work. Chapter two elaborates the causes of Caldwell’s alienation based on Fromm’s alienation theory. The Caldwell’s self-alienation is embodied by his sense of powerlessness, which comes from his loss of identity. In the family relationship, Caldwell’s alienation is manifested as his anxieties about his own value resulting from his negligence of productive love. In social relations, Caldwell’s alienation is the embodied by his loss of rationality, which is caused by his confusion about the frame of devotion and orientation. Chapter three explains Caldwell’s methods to overcome alienation. In the process of struggling against alienation, Caldwell gradually discovers his own strength and learns to accept support of others. By assuming social responsibility and facing reality, he reconstructs a sense of identity. By changing his way of interacting with others, Caldwell no longer feels anxious about materialistic values. He finds his own worth and fills the emptiness within himself. Finally, this thesis draws a conclusion that Caldwell successfully overcomes alienation by reconstructing his identity cognition, improving his relationship with others and finding the meaning of existence. Caldwell’s struggles against alienation are of reference significance to modern people’s struggle against alienation. By establishing the values and actively using rational and productive love, modern people can effectively overcome alienation. N2 - [Chinese abstract not available] Love plays an important role in our daily lives, and an in-depth study of this theme can help us strengthen the bonds between people and enhance the civilization of society. As one of the representative figures of Western Marxism, Fromm believes that we should understand love from a humanitarian tradition. Fromm lived in a capitalist society with rapidly expanding material wealth. Accompanied by two world wars and an economic crisis, Fromm believes that people are in a state of alienated existence, in which man regards material possessions as the whole of his life and is alienated from himself, his fellow man, and nature. Through the observation and analysis of the current social situation, Fromm thinks about the alienation of human existence in three dimensions: the alienation of freedom, the alienation of love, and the alienation of existence. Based on Marx’s reflection on the human beings and Freud’s psychoanalytic approach, Fromm formed his theory about humanitarian love. Fromm believed that human beings have a fundamental spiritual need to long for union with others and thus escape loneliness and anxiety. It is precisely because modern Western society is unable to solve this need that people choose to escape from it in ways such as mechanized convergence and consumerism. As a kind of union based on maintaining their own independence, love can solve this spiritual need of human beings, so that people can get rid of the survival of the alienation of the predicament, to realize the liberation of human beings. In Fromm’s view, the essence of love is a dynamic creative activity, which includes both giving and creating. In addition to this, love also includes such essential elements as responsibility and respect. Fromm’s humanitarian love clarifies the true meaning of love, enabling people to reflect on the misconceptions of love and their own circumstances, so as to obtain a free and harmonious state of existence. Despite the limitations of this theory, it still has a certain reference value and usefulness for today’s world. [Translation: www.cnki.net, 1/2025] Y1 - 2024 ER -
