TY - GEN A1 - Gao, Qin T1 - Alienation and Return of the Human Nature in >Salvage the Bones< [《拾骨》:人性的异化与回归], Master thesis, English Language and Literature, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi’an, Shaanxi, China 2016 [application of Fromm's theories to art]. N2 - In her two novels and a memoir, the young African-American writer Jesmyn Ward (born 1977) tells the story of her people and of what happened in her homeland. However, more and more scholars are taking notice of this young writer and her second book, >Salvage the Bones<. Although >Salvage the Bones< won the National Book Award for Fiction in 2011 and the Alex Award in 2012, little research has been done on Ward's work. >Salvage the Bones<, published in 2011, aims to convey a universal value and call for a return to humanity. The novel begins with China's birth and ends with Esch becoming a mother, and is based on the hurricane, telling the story of the black family's 12 days before and after the hurricane from the perspective of Isis, a 14-year-old girl. In the novel, Ward aims to expose the alienation of modern man, modern families and modern society. At the same time, Ward's intention is to seek personal independence, family reunification and the return of a harmonious society. Using Fromm's theory of human alienation , this paper analyses the alienation in >Salvage the Bones< from three perspectives: Esch's helplessness, the brokenness of her family and the irreconcilable racial tensions, and emphasizes the importance of self-love, family reunification and the return of the love of fellow human beings. In addition, the paper explores the social significance of the novel from a metaphorical perspective. Finally, the thesis argues that >Salvage the Bones< calls for the return of love and celebrates the glory of humanity by depicting the story of her people and her homeland. This has great significance for people to adopt a positive attitude towards life. [Automatic translation] Y1 - 2016 ER -
