TY - JOUR A1 - Gams, A. T1 - Marx, Freud and Alienation JF - Co-Existence, Vol. 17 (No. 2, Oct. 1980), pp. 198-223. N2 - The interaction of power and property and their tendency to generate alienation are considered from Marxist and Freudian perspectives. Although Freudian and Marxist conceptions of society are basically antithetical, the immense popularity of Freudian concepts has impelled some Marxist thinkers to borrow from them. The theories of two Marxist scholars, Erich FROMM and Herbert Marcuse, are considered. Criticizing both Marxist and Freudian-Marxist conceptions of the power/property relationship, it is found that unless the two are separated into public and private spheres, they will gravitate toward each other and control will be hampered. When they are united, and property is directly derived from power as in the USSR, power tends to evade control. Since both power and property are inevitable in any society, complete >dealienation< is impossible. Y1 - 1980 ER -
