Parallels are drawn between Cushman’s […] article and the work of the mid-century social critic and psychoanalyst, Erich Fromm, particularly his book (Fromm, 1941). The author reflects on his own relationship with Cushman and on the enduring relevance of Cushman’s cross-disciplinary scholarship for psychology. N2 - There is no subject >in itself.< There is no subject without society. The subject must incorporate in its definition the impact of its social inclusion. It is in function of this >other< that, >from the very beginning,< individual psychology is >simultaneously< social psychology. It is there, in this field, where it is possible to approach how the conflicts that society harbors are expressed in what seems more personal and intimate, since what is lived in one’s own body also expresses, in its own way, something that is outside, in the collective field. From this place we must also think about the unconscious. Y1 - 2025 ER - TY - JOUR A1 - Fetscher, Iring T1 - (Marx's Concretization of the Concept of Freedom, Hebrew) JF - E. The commotion that this entailed, motivated that in 1967, the monastic community decided to dissolve, after its prior, the Belgian priest Gregorio Lemercier, was repeatedly admonished by the Vatican authorities. Starting from the dispersed existing documentation, and abundant unpublished material, this article proposes, in the first place, to reconstruct the events that took place in the monastery of Ahuacatitlán. Secondly, to highlight the architectural implications of the process, something that no one has noticed to date. Finally, to underline the role that Fray Gabriel Chávez de la Mora played as architect of the monastery and, especially, of its circular chapel, very novel and controversial for that time. Many Zen scholars, thinkers, psychologists, and countless scholars and Zen practitioners, represented by Hu Shi, D.T. Suzuki, Heinrich Dumoulin, and Erich Fromm, have devoted themselves to the study of Zen. Professor Mingdong Gu, the Kathryn Cissell Chair Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, is one of the most accomplished. Professor Gu has more than 30 years of experience in Zen practice and more than 20 years of accumulation of Zen theory. After years of cross-cultural comparative exploration of Zen between the East and the West, he has created a new paradigm for studying the nature and basic principles of Zen and Zen enlightenment, and based on this, he has put forward a series of innovative viewpoints. [Online ISSN 1522-1970] N2 - This study, through the concept of biophilia, examines how we can restore a >love of life< in a world often characterised by rationalisation, destruction, and alienation from self and nature. Specifically, we observe how outdoor adventures during travels might contribute to the development of biophilic feelings. To this end, we employed a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to analyse the narratives from nine participants in the UK, Germany, and Serbia. The findings suggest that adventure activities in the outdoors foster the development of meaningful relationships with the self, other humans and non-human nature, all contributing to the enhancement of eudaimonic wellbeing. The study adds to the tourism literature by arguing that more biophilic and ecological approaches, hitherto underutilised in studying the benefits of tourism from a positive psychology perspective, might serve as a lens through which to explore meaningful social transformation in times of polycrises. [Online ISSN 1461-7056] [doi.org/10.1177/1354067X241226456] N2 - The purpose of this paper is to rethink the topic of freedom for contemporary psychology. Freedom, within psychological research today, is a neglected, even slightly old-fashioned term. In this paper, we explore the practical, normative, and political dimensions of freedom as a psychological concept. We begin by tracing out key understandings of freedom from political theory, before discussing how thinkers such as Skinner, Maslow, Fromm, and May understood the different dimensions of freedom. We then discuss a governmental perspective on freedom, drawn from the work of Nikolas Rose, before finally turning to the sociocultural psychology of L. S. Vygotsky. We contend that freedom is not merely the absence of constraints but a complex interplay between agency, responsibility, and social connections. Our paper argues that the modern emphasis on negative freedom, characterized by reduced interference and obligations, has resulted in a paradoxical situation where individuals feel overwhelmed and seek escape from freedom. By revisiting the insights of Erich Fromm and other scholars, we emphasize the need for positive freedom, which involves voluntary connections with others and active participation in shaping society. We argue that psychology’s mandate should be to facilitate the exploration of alternative avenues that lead to flourishing and self-actualization. Y1 - 2024 ER -
