    <abstract language="eng">Edgar Allan Poe's short stories are famous for the horror and deep sorrow, yet The Man of the Crowd is out of the ordinary. The melancholy of modern people is revealed here: escape from isolation, but still outside even if in the crowd. The article reveals the modern people's mental problem, combined with the relative theory of Erich Fromm, emphasizing on Poe's prophetic solicitude for the predicament of human being.</abstract>
