24724 2008 zho article 0 -- -- -- Fromm’s theory of character comprises his analysis of (individual) character, productive character and nonproductive character, and based on which there is his original creation – the theory of social character. The elaboration of Fromm s theory of character in this paper enhances our understanding of the characteristic of the theory: the merging of Freudianism and Marxism. His theory of social character >helps< to bridge the dialectical relation between >base< and >ideology< in Marxism.
