In our theological culture, the printed word is generally regarded with such excessive respect that the grossest errors in fact may go unchallenged for years until the properly skeptical reader comes along. With the deepening of the scientific and technological revolution, innovation has become more and more important in the development of the country, and fundamentally stimulating the creative vitality of individuals and society has become an inherent requirement for social development. At the same time, the emergence of the epidemic has bred pessimism about the future development of the situation, and a series of social problems have emerged one after another. In the post-COVID-19 era, to dispel people's negative emotions and fundamentally enhance people's confidence in the future situation, we need not only a solid material guarantee for the country, but also a better understanding of the current situation. In Fromm's view, forming a rational understanding of the individual and the world is an important manifestation of the creative development of the individual. As one of the important representatives of the humanistic psychoanalysis school, Fromm saw the commonalities between Marx's humanistic doctrine and Freud's psychoanalysis theory, and thus combined the two organically. In the face of various problems existing in capitalist society, Fromm adhered to the humanistic stance, and made diagnosis and treatment of society and people living in it from the perspective of social psychology. From the perspective of human feelings and needs, he pointed out that the perfect state of human development should be creative and spontaneous.- This paper points out the pathological phenomenon in the modern capitalist society and the alienation phenomenon of people in it, and criticizes this phenomenon strongly, and puts forward the targeted reform plan, hoping to build a sound society to realize the creative development of people. He believed that creativity fulfilled the unique need of human survival and was a potential for a mentally healthy person. Creative people can fully develop their personality and reason, express their true inner needs, and have a constructive relationship with themselves and the world. Only a sound society can stimulate people's creativity. Fromm's attempt to clarify the interaction between economic base and ideology from the perspective of social psychology points out the role of creativity in human development, enriches the connotation of human essence, and specifically analyzes the psychological mechanism of alienation of modern man on the basis of the interpretation of the general psychological mechanism of man. His creative theory is not only a supplement and development of Marx's humanistic thought, but also an inheritance and development of the Frankfurt School's social and cultural theories. Although his proposals for changes in the economic, social, political and cultural fields are not directed at the capitalist system itself, but are only an improvement of the present society, and many of his theoretical ideas are too specific and lack practicality, his theories profoundly combine human existence and psychological conditions with social development, inspiring us to pay attention to people's needs and seek solutions to social problems from the subjectivity of people. It has a great value for our country to implement the spirit of putting people first, dispel the negative emotions of individuals under the epidemic, and re-establish social confidence. In this process, we begin with the two basic concepts, namely civilization and instinct. In Freud's theory, the civilization is existed as the performance of difference between people and animals. It not only include the knowledge and ability that formed in dealing with the relationship between human and nature, but also include the various rules and regulations between peoples. Instinct, as a core concept in his theoretical system, is inherited from the theory of biological evolution. He believes that the instinct urged the organism returning to the previous state, and eventually, he divided the instinct into instinct for life and death instinct, and believed it has fundamental confliction between the two instincts. When Freud's perspective turns to the field of the social life, he also looks at modern civilization from the perspective of instinct, and believes that modern civilization oppresses the satisfaction of instinct and meets the demands of instinct at the same time. But, he does not completely abandon the idea of civilization or instinct, he thinks that civilization can oppress instinct appropriately. However, the oppression what degree is appropriate, Freud does not give a clear standard. So, in fact, the problem he encountered has not been fully resolved. Aiming at the difficulties encountered by Freud, other scholars such as Marcuse and Fromm have tried to solve this problem. But, their theories have their own shortcomings. Marcuse does not fully understand Freud's problem, he is more concerned about Freud's instinct for life. In fact, Freud is more attention about death instinct. As for Fromm, he integrates the spirit of Marxism and psychoanalysis, in the face of the difficulties encountered by Freud, he thinks that the problem can disappear with the development of society. So, he gives us only a hope, a utopian existence. So, we should explore the root cause of the dilemma encountered by Freud, and analyze whether the dilemma exist or not in actually.- When analyzing Freud's theory of civilization, we finds that to imagine a non-oppressed civilization, the biggest obstacle we faced is the death instinct.- So, the question is weather the death instinct is necessary. Karen·Horney raises doubts in this regard. Through her own analysis, she thinks that it is not necessary to mention death instinct, for, there is no full evidence to certificate it, and it also contradict with the reality. However, the death instinct, after all, as a real theory is putted forward by Freud, and when the theory take the great dilemma to him, he still use it. So, it was necessary to explore the theoretical way what his death instinct produced. Freud is impacted by the theory of evolution deeply, and he introduces the concept of instinct as a biological field into the psychological field. In this course, he also introduce the logic of evolution into psychological field. So, the things what are established in biological field are similarly established in psychological field. When he discovers that the people have the tendency to repeat previous activities, he considers that it represents a kind of instinctive tendency also. On this basis, he puts forward the death instinct that is, return to the previous inorganic state. However, when he looks at human civilization, he is still from the view of biology, and considers that people and animals have no essential difference. This is a non-scientific idea .It has been recognized by many scholars that it has essential difference between people and animals. Therefore, the study of human civilization should be from the fundamental characters of human.- In the history of Western thoughts, it has been existed the concept of rational person religionary person and biological person. Cassirer puts forward the concept of symbolic person, on the basis of analyzing the limitation of these concepts, and it mainly emphasize the higher level ability of free creating what human has. This is consistent with the Marx's incisive elucidation. So, >people are symbolic animals< seizes the people's fundamental characters. From the concept of >human is symbolic animals<, human has the ability of creating and using the symbol. This is the universal dynamic creativity what human has. In the course of creating and using symbol, human has the ability of giving the value to symbols freely and dynamicly, so the symbol system is a free system also. Civilization is a development course of self-determination. It develops and heritages through the symbol media. Thus, the development of civilization is a free, dynamic process also. So the development of civilization not only does not oppress anything, but also is not hampered by other things. Thus, in Freud's view, the course of the development of civilization does not oppress instinct. This genealogy provides further context to the contribution of two other key Frankfurters, Karl Mannheim and Michael Foulkes, who progressed therapeutic democracy in the UK and shaped the early days of the TC as a group-based treatment paradigm. Design/methodology/approach: Discourse analysis and collective biography based on biographical details, texts and witness accounts. Findings: The works of Marcuse and Fromm provide a hybrid psychosocial post-Freudian schemas that beckoned philosophic reconciliation between the state and the personal psyche culminating in new left psychoanalytic academic sectors. Erich Fromm's contribution is situated squarely in the clinical sphere in the USA dating from the 1930s after he fled from Germany and settled in the USA where he became a well-known lecturer at Chestnut Lodge during a time when it was developing its approach under the rubric of >milieu therapy<. Marcuse's influence on psychiatry is tracked through the development of ideas and writings emerging from his reading of Freud, finally intersecting with the emergence of TCs and anti-psychiatry when he delivered the keynote address at the Dialectics of Liberation Conference in London in 1967. Held at the height of the first generation of TCs, Joe Berke, R.D. Laing and colleagues considered Marcuse as someone to headline the Dialectics Conference because; >Marcuse was the Grandpapa of Flower Power< (Joe Berke said). Originality/value: A rapprochement between milieu therapy in the USA, influenced by Fromm and Marcuse and the European tradition of TCs, influenced by Mannheim and Foulkes is demonstrated. [application of Fromm's theories to art]}, abstract = {[Chinese abstract not available] Ray Bradbury's >Fahrenheit 451< depicts a world where books are burned and thoughts and freedom are oppressed. Erich Fromm's socio-psychological theory of freedom is applied to elucidate the psychological coping mechanisms adopted by characters in the novel under adverse circumstances, and explain behaviors of characters under different psychological coping mechanisms. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on reasons for characters' psychological coping mechanisms: The fictional future world in >Fahrenheit 451< reflects a side of American society in the 1950 s. Ray Bradbury provides a detailed portrayal of the society's pathological culture and values, among which consumerism, instrumental reason, and hedonism trigger and deepen negative emotions including inferiority, individual insignificance, and powerlessness. To survive, characters give up rational thinking to assimilate into unfavorable social forces, which is a manifestation of negative freedom. The second chapter analyzes characters' three escape mechanisms caused by negative freedom, namely authoritarianism, destructiveness, and automation conformity, which are the psychological reasons underlying characters' absurd behaviors and the propensity for violence and self-destruction. The third chapter explicates the fact that the key to Montag's character growth lies in his transformation from negative freedom to positive freedom. In this process, three capacities are cultivated: the capacity for active involvement and personal experience, the capacity for reason and rational faith, and the capacity for love, which enables him to realize creativity on the sensual, intellectual, and emotional level, and complete the transformation from nonproductive to productive orientation. By dissecting psychological coping mechanisms of characters in the novel, the thesis concludes that characters' behaviors reflect two psychological coping mechanisms, namely negative freedom centering around the escape mechanisms, and positive freedom centering around creativity. For individuals struggling in adverse circumstances, a productive orientation with the capacity for active involvement and personal experience, the capacity for reason and rational faith, and the capacity for love is the hope of individual growth and human civilization. [repositorio.ul.pt/handle/10451/45283]}, abstract = {>Why is there not an adequate and efficient answer to climate change?< is a question that has been haunting millions of people around the world for the last decades, and that is growingly being made by all publics. Despite the scientific consensus on climate change, the necessary measures to deter this phenomenon are still far from the speed and range necessary to effectively address it (when there are any measures at all). Metanarratives are the grand histories that humankind tells itself to guide its practices and actions. They either work towards solving this civilisational crisis or to stop any effective solutions. The current metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism is one of the main obstacles to stopping the climate crisis, but there is a conflict of metanarratives in the world today, and new possibilities are coming into existence. Potential future metanarratives for a different climate will either be survival of the fittest or civilising tools when human civilisation is in its most dangerous moment. The current metanarrative underpins capitalist dominance and is perpetuated through capitalist ideology and hegemony, locking humanity into a path of irreversible climate change. The unavoidable systematic change needed to effectively tackle climate change will go as deep as the social construction of what >human nature< is and what relations humans have to each other and the environment. Through an adaptation of Michael Burawoy's extended case method a methodology has been developed to evaluate the appearance of a new climate change metanarrative articulated with social justice, a climate justice potential metanarrative. A historical study on the evolution of public policy and climate policy in particular for three countries in the western mediterranean - Portugal, Spain and Morocco - was conducted. A revision of information about each of the countries, focusing on the evolution of climate and future scenarios, as well as social, economical, political and industrial tendencies, was done. There were 1107 interviews conducted for this thesis, 46 of which were face-to-face and structured. A methodological tool was developed to quantify the difference between really existing climate policy and climate action that would achieve the affirmed goals of stopping climate collapse on the three countries. Over the course of three years post-Paris Agreement enquiries were conducted in Portugal (in the ClimAdaPT.local project), in Spain and Morocco, focusing on national and local politicians, academia, social movements and private enterprises. From believing into climate change until supporting effective climate policies, there is a long path where world views, political affiliation and ideology, cultural values, perception of risks, experiencing climate change, notions of international and social justice, attribution of responsibilities and public participation play a very important role. The inquiries revealed that many personal and collective blocks are determinant in the path into reaching policies that effectively respond to the climate crisis, and that shifting world views and experiences that affect this path will be tested in the coming years. This is a qualitative expression of the current metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism and the political clashes of the present moment open the door to new metanarratives, including a potential metanarrative of climate justice. Together with other researchers 'climate policy gap' graphics were developed for Portugal, Spain and Morocco to help reveal this divide and quantify the under-reaction between diagnosis and action, through layers of political indecision, miscommunication, insufficient action and the power of the fossil fuels industries. The climate policy gaps for the three nations revealed overshoots on even the most ambitious levels of emissions reductions pledged when compared to trajectories compatible with 1.5ºC or 2ºC limits. This research suggests that there is a built-in feature of under-reaction in climate policy, which staves off any emission pathways compatible with stopping a temperature rise above 1.5ºC by 2100. The climate policy gap is a political and methodological tool that reveals systemic shortcomings of climate action, its visibility identifies benchmarks and sectors that should be activated to close these gaps in response to the growing popular demands for climate justice and it quantifies the gap between a metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism and what is necessary to prevent reaching even the Paris Agreement's targets. 2018 and 2019 saw the emergence of a much stronger climate justice movement. The three most relevant components of this movement - Blockadia, Youth Climate Strikes (Fridays for Future) and Extinction Rebellion - have combined efforts in a global call for civil disobedience and insurgency on political lines that respond to the climate sci ence that calls for a 50\% greenhouse gas global cuts by 2030. They have put in the for paigns such as Climate Jobs are creating political programs for a social revolution in line with German Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin's idea of revolution as the emergency break when history moves in a catastrophic direction. An early critic of the dangers posed by the threats of progress and technological development led by capitalism, Benjamin proposed an alternative view of revolution: it is not inevitable or a natural result of the contradiction between productive forces and productive relations, but rather an interruption of an historical evolution that is leading to catastrophe. These movements and programs are not enough for the emergence of a new climate justice potential metanarrative, although they are necessary conditions for it. In conclusion, there are signs of the emergence of a climate justice potential metanarrative, with a push for the creation of new institutions, adaptation of old ones, public perception of the dimension of the problem of climate change and effective legislative response to it. Some of the most expressive characteristics of this potential metanarrative were outlined: a human awakening full of impetus for social reordering; a redistribution of power, wellbeing and cooperation; a new notion of prosperity inside natural limits and just resource redistribution; reconnection of knowledges and sciences; the need for a public and participatory science to address human's and earth's needs; the teleology of humanity's collective survival; understanding and respecting life system's cycles, favouring life's diversity as an efficient tool against the current increase in entropy in the ecosphere; acknowledging and integrating the care economy into daily life, with the corresponsibilization of men and women for care and maintenance activities; recovering indigenous people's knowledge of biomimicry as a collective tool, promoting human beneficial effects on life cycles and ecosystems; understanding capitalist production's incompatibility with basic life system's principles. This dissertation looks to contribute to a revitalization of alienation theory by offering an understanding of alienation that is grounded in the framework of social ontology as forwarded in the works of John Searle. This social ontological account conceives of alienation as a fallout fact that arises when there is a performative contradiction between the enactment of a deontic power and the collective recognition of the status function that made possible that self-same deontic power in the first place. Framing alienation in this way provides the means for resolving those central aporias that have otherwise stymied its more widespread usage, namely, the question of alienation theory's fundamental unity, the division between objective and subjective approaches, and the term's normative status. The second half of the project is then dedicated to a critical engagement between the social ontological account and the long and diverse history of alienation theory beginning with its pre-philosophical uses and continuing into its philosophical appropriation in the 19th Century, its golden era in the mid-20th Century, and finally its place in second- and third-wave Critical Theory.}, language = {en} } @book{Baum, author = {Baum, Gerhart}, title = {Rettet die Grundrechte! This dissertation is focused on the stories of veteran public elementary school teachers in rural Georgia who continue to teach in spite of the current seemingly hopeless state of education at the local, state and national level. The theoretical framework of this inquiry builds upon a wide array of works such as the work of Freire (1994, 1998) and Fromm (2010) on critical hope, as well as, multiple theorists' work on versions of hope (West, 2004; Giroux, 2013; Duncan-Andrade, 2009; Lear, 2006); the work on passion for teaching (Palmer, 2007; Nieto, 2003, 2005, 2008; Ayers, 2008; Villerand et al., 2003; Fernet et al., 2014; Phelps \& Benson, 2012), as well as, morale in education (Evans, 1997; Mackenzie, 2007).
