The authors, who are husband and wife, are directors of the Sullivan Institute for Research in Psychoanalysis. In addition to drawing in a major way on Sullivan's formulations, the authors were influenced by the particular approach of Drs. Frieda Fromm-Reichman, Erich Fromm, and Clara Thompson. The central idea of this book is that the life history of any particular individual can only be understood by the quality of his relatedness with significant people. The therapist is the agent who will help catalyze or impede the forces within the individual towards growth. The authors delineate the elements which need affirmation in order for human capacities to be realized. The text is divided into five sections: the structure of personality, normal sequence in interpersonal growth, love and hate, diagnostic categories in interpersonal […]}, language = {en} } @misc{Lunsky, author = {Lunsky, Louis L.}, title = {Review Fromm, E.: The Dogma of Christ and Other Essays on Religion, Psychology and Culture (1963a, English)}, series = {Archives of Internal Medicine, Vol. 113, No. 3 (1964), pp. 465-466. He is the most articulate advocate on the role of social forces in molding our character and on our manner of relating to others. This volume is an expansion of his systematic doctrine. >The Dogma of Christ<, which is also the longest essay in this collection, appears in English for the first time. It was written thirty years ago, when Fromm identified himself with the orthodox wing of the psychoanalytic movement. He describes the experience of the early Christian community, with its emphasis on the role of the son, as an expression of the revolutionary stirrings of an oppressed minority against the paternalism of the Roman Empire. >The suffering Jesus originated primarily from the need for identification on […]}, language = {en} } @misc{Lothane, author = {Lothane, Henry}, title = {Review Lawrence Friedman: Freud's papers on technique and contemporary clinical practice}, series = {International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 31 (No. 4, 2022), pp. 252-254.}, journal = {International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 31 (No. 4, 2022), pp. 252-254.}, language = {en} } @misc{Lothane, author = {Lothane, Henry}, title = {Review Ahron Friedberg with Sandra Sherman. Anderson. In a simple, uncluttered style Dr. Anderson presents a string of banalities relieved periodically by bits of misinformation and a >valid theory of behavior< which is really a jumble of other psychiatric writings The book is intended to be free of cultist jargon and suitable for parents and physicians. It also purports to offer a start toward a conceptual integration of psychiatry and religion. The book is free of cultist jargon, although it is doubtful that it would be suitable for parents and physicians. In addition, it fails to integrate psychiatric and religious concepts, and it offers no new theory of behavior. Surprisingly, the quality of writing is excellent. In one chronological sense Beyond Freud does go beyond; for some of the ideas of Freud's successors are included, such as Sullivan, Fromm, Horney, etc. But in the chronological span of Freud's own writings, the book does not go much beyond early Freud. Brief synopses of each book are presented, rather than full reviews. In >The Art of Being<, Fromm presents his synthesis of spiritual teachings from Zen to existentialism, as well as a synopsis of his earlier critiques of consumer capitalism. >Basic writings< is a collection of essays, lectures, and sections from Heidegger's major works. Of special interest to psychologists interested in Heidegger's methodology is the re-translation of the introduction to >Being and Time<. In >History of the Concept of Time: Prolegomena<, Heidegger elaborates the methodological and foundational connection of his work to Brentano, Dilthey, and Husserl, thus providing for the first time an authoritative understanding of the relationship of his uniquely hermeneutic phenomenology to the ideas of his predecessors. In >Complexity: Life at the Edge of Chaos<, Roger Lewin discusses the search for the set of rules that underly complexity theory and the >grand unification< of the life sciences. >The Future of an Illusion: Film, feminism, and psychoanalysis<, by Constance Penley, is a collection of essays on the sexual politics of representation. In >Human inquiry: A Sourcebook of New Paradigm Research<, Reason and Rowan cover the philosophy, methodology, practice, and prospects of what the editors call >new paradigm research<: alternative approaches to human science research that are both collaborative and experiential. >Reading Heidegger: Commemorations< is a richly provocative book of essays by an impressive list of 23 Heidegger scholars around the world. This text celebrates, reconsiders, and sometimes pokes fun at one of the most controversial and most important thinkers of our century. Finally, written in response to Heidegger's >The Essence of Truth<, Jean-Paul Sartre's >Truth and Existence provides a bridge between Sartre's >Being and Nothingness< and his >Critique of Dialectical Reason. It is a philosophical as well as psychological study of epistemology, based on his phenomenological ontology that becomes a work on morality.
