Papers published in psychoanalytic journals play a fundamental role in teaching tasks. The historical separation of psychoanalytic practice from the research community and the university probably relates to the relative lack of empirical investigation and the contested status of research in general within the psychoanalytic community. In addition, there is not enough debate among different schools and orientations, making it very unlikely that creative solutions to theoretical and practical discussions will be found. Related to this, there seems to be a worrying deficit of recent references in psychoanalytic papers compared with general psychiatric journals or medical publications. This reflects a dangerous attitude of not paying attention to contemporary writers within our own field. Reasons behind this might be fear of confrontation with other colleagues, loyalty to our own dogmas and clinical practices, a system of training that promotes continuity, and even organizational structures that sustain this state of things. A renewed attention to research in psychoanalysis (conceptual, empirical, clinical-observational, etc.) and establishing ties to academic environments in the fields of natural and human sciences might improve this situation and offer a path towards collective theoretical and clinical development.}, language = {en} } @article{Decinaetal, author = {Decina, P. and et al.,}, title = {Clinical and Psychological Assessment of Children of Bipolar Probands}, series = {American Journal of Psychiatry, Vol. 140 (No. 5, 1983), pp. 548-553.}, journal = {American Journal of Psychiatry, Vol. 140 (No. 5, 1983), pp. 548-553.}, language = {en} } @article{Kaecheleetal, author = {K{\"a}chele, Horst and et al.,}, title = {Countertransference as object of empirical research?}, series = {International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 24 (No. 2, 2015), pp. 96-108.}, journal = {International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 24 (No. 2, 2015), pp. 96-108.}, abstract = {The concept of countertransference as a robust cornerstone of psychoanalytic work has gained momentum over the last five decades. Therefore, we chose to analyze Enescu's >Œdipe< and Stravinsky's >Oedipus Rex<. Two distinct methodologies were used in our study. The first explored the concept of free association through musical themes in the operas. The second involved the comparative study of the Oedipus myth in order to provide a deeper understanding of Oedipus's character. We observed that Oedipus displayed symptoms of his complex through the traits of aggressiveness and arrogance. Moreover, we noticed that Oedipus was compelled by the necessity of finding out who his real parents were and by unconsciously accomplishing the prophecy. Oedipus assumed the responsibility to free the Thebans from plague. Yet, it was too late, for the feared part of the prophecy was already accomplished. He provided a wrong answer to the Sphinx and then received the most severe punishment, one that would have ostracism as its outcome. It was, however, not too late for Oedipus to finally discover who his real parents were. Nevertheless, afraid of losing his place as King of Thebes, he investigated the plague's causes. This study aimed to describe and summarize the perspectives of experienced psychoanalysts on important aspects of psychoanalysis today. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 62 psychoanalysts. The interview data were processed using a theory-informed thematic analysis. There were 12 macro-themes: important aspects of psychoanalysis, important authors in psychoanalysis today, >contemporary psychoanalysis,< the proliferation of psychoanalytic >schools,< psychoanalytic identity and psychotherapy, psychoanalytic training, the Oedipus complex, dreams, the relationship between psychoanalytic theory and outcome and process research, the relationship between psychoanalysis and research in the neurosciences, empirically validated psychoanalytic concepts, and the marginalization of psychoanalysis. Our study revealed the image of a pluralistic psychoanalysis that the participants interviewed show they have, with various schools/definitions/sources, where Freud and the classical model are contested by numerous other approaches.}, language = {en} } @article{Gastetal, author = {Gast, Lilli and et al.,}, title = {Verleihung der Ehrenmedaille der IPU an Rainer Funk, mit Beitr{\"a}gen von Lilli Gast, Thomas K{\"u}hn, Christa Rohde-Dachser und Rainer Funk}, series = {Fromm Forum (Deutsche Ausgabe - ISSN 1437-0956), 26 / 2022, Tuebingen (Selbstverlag), pp. 008-016.}, volume = {d26/2022a}, journal = {Fromm Forum (Deutsche Ausgabe - ISSN 1437-0956), 26 / 2022, Tuebingen (Selbstverlag), pp. 008-016.}, language = {de} } @article{Kuehnetal, author = {K{\"u}hn, Thomas and et al.,}, title = {Die qualitative Sekund{\"a}ranalyse als Forschungsstrategie zur subjektorientierten Untersuchung gesellschaftlicher Ver{\"a}nderungen und Wandlungsprozesse (unter Mitarbeit von Sabine Beckmann, Marina Mohr, Patrick Ehnis und Katrin Voigt)}, series = {T. In the public discussion after the Charlie Hebdo attacks, it has often been understood as an absolute right to say anything - to offend, to make a fool of others and of oneself, and to express any opinion regardless of the consequences. We challenge this view and propose that advocating freedom of speech without understanding its social foundations is misleading and counterproductive. Based on the critical social theories of Erich Fromm, Charles Taylor and Axel Honneth, we show that there is an alternative tradition in which freedom is fundamentally rooted in social relations and therefore requires respect for others. We argue that interpreting freedom of speech as a social freedom avoids some of the problems apparent in current discussions. We illustrate the model with a specific case of a three-year-old boy who developed a gender identity disorder in reaction to his mother's depression after she had an abortion. We describe how the temperament of the child, his reaction to a psychic trauma during a sensitive period of mental representational development, and multigenerational transmission of psychodynamics lead to a gender identity disorder. We view the cross-gender fantasy as a compromise formation for the management of separation anxiety and aggression, and we view its enactment in behavior, in part, as a defensive attempt to understand an unmetabolizable experience of aggression.
