His humanistic vision shares much with humanistic and positive psychology but differs in important respects. Centrally, Fromm's notion of emancipation emphasises both individual and societal components. He believes independent and authentic relationships are a higher expression of human potential and bring true fulfilment. Fromm identifies a creative, non-alienated character orientation that includes a 'humanistic conscience'. Comparing authoritarian and humanistic consciences, he emphasises human potential and social and individual interdependence. Personal development must also drive social change, and vice versa. Fromm's perspective rejects zero-sum, either/or thinking about social change vis-{\`a}-vis individual flourishing. For him, both are important, and they are related. Following Fromm's example, the Left should stress that individualistic societies cannot satisfy individual needs. Self-fulfilment requires fairness, community and shared personal experiences.}, language = {en} } @article{Stefanaetal, author = {Stefana, Alberto and et al.,}, title = {Probing the impact of psychoanalytic therapy for bipolar disorders: A scoping review}, series = {International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 33 (No. 2, 2024), pp. 051-062.}, journal = {International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 33 (No. 2, 2024), pp. 051-062.}, abstract = {No systematic review has been conducted to provide an overview of the effectiveness of psychoanalysis for treatment outcomes in bipolar depression and mania. The present study undertakes a scoping review of the effectiveness of psychoanalysis for bipolar disorder (BD), provides a summary of the evidence base, and identifies issues for future research in this area. A thorough search of journal articles in MEDLINE, PEP-Web, PsycINFO, Scopus, and the Web of Science was carried out to obtain available studies on psychoanalytic treatment for BD published from 1990 to 2021. We searched for either quantitative or single-case studies. Twenty-six single-case reports from 21 articles and no quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria. A qualitative analysis suggests efficacy and cost-effectiveness but thus far there is no scientific evidence in support of psychoanalysis. It includes 25 interviews with young Muslim women in the age group 18-25 years whose parents or grandparents migrated to Germany from Turkey. In terms of how their identity has evolved, the participants recount a mostly positive integration into German society, especially on a professional level, contrary to the negativity and devaluation often experienced within their Turkish family. This is a symptom of how Turkish and German society place different expectations on women, with an effect on the development of their identity as well as causing conflicting emotions, especially, for example, when it comes to religious matters such as deciding whether to wear a headscarf. The different personal and subjective motivations behind this are the result of Turkish-Islamic ideas clashing with Western secular thinking.
