This book is an elaboration of a lecture course given at the Washington School of Psychiatry, the Washington-Baltimore Psychoanalytic Institute in Washington, and the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry in New York. The orientation and purpose of the book is set forth in the concluding paragraph of the author's introduction, >As we set out to investigate and clarify the principles of intensive psychotherapy, we must study therefore not only the psychotherapeutic process as such, or the patient's personality in terms of his interpersonal processes, but also the personality of the participant observer, the psychiatrist, in terms of his interpersonal relationships.< In the opinion of this reviewer, the investigation is unusually competent and thorough and genuine clarification results. The reading of this book should not only be considered a professional >must< for the clinician, but it can be anticipated as genuinely enjoyable and rewarding.
