This article asks: How can Fromm's critical theory of communication be used and updated to provide a critical perspective in the age of digital and communicative capitalism? In order to provide an answer, this article discusses elements from Fromm's work that allow us to better understand the human communication process. The focus is on communication (the second section), ideology (the third section), and technology (the fourth section). Fromm's approach can inform a critical theory of communication in multiple respects: His notion of the social character allows to underpin such a theory with foundations from critical psychology. Fromm's distinction between the authoritarian and the humanistic character can be used for discerning among authoritarian and humanistic communication. Fromm's work can also inform ideology critique: the ideology of having shapes life, thought, language, and social action in capitalism. In capitalism, technology (including computing) is fetishized and the logic of quantification shapes social relations. Fromm's quest for humanist technology and participatory computing can inform contemporary debates about digital capitalism and its alternatives.}, language = {en} } @article{Fuchs, author = {Fuchs, Christian}, title = {Communicative Socialism/Digital Socialism}, series = {TripleC, Vol. 18, No. 1 (2020), pp. 1-31. Should climate projections be accurate, there is little time to waste. This work makes the claim that we are not only in a political gridlock but also in an academic one. Researching climate philosophy from its inception, the concluding view is that no major progress, outside of a standardized descriptive analysis, has been achieved. Thus, the work evaluates an array of climate philosophers e.g. Stephen Gardiner, James Garvey, Peter Singer, Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, etc., with specific emphasis on the economic philosopher John Broome, suggesting that their recommendations and assessments fall short of being totalizing in scope and therefore of producing viable theories that, if practically sought after, can achieve social sustainability. To fix the problem of a lack of social and strategic trajectory, I offer up Erich Fromm's humanistic philosophy as a suggestive model. In doing so, the argument is made that this can aid in reorienting our external/empirical obsession by shifting our focus toward our 'interiority - our internal worlds and psyches -, since a necessary condition in achieving sustainability is changing our mindset. By focusing on the human psyche, its structure and needs, can our behavior finally shift in a way that compliments scientific recommendations and ecological demands. [repositorio.ul.pt/handle/10451/45283]}, abstract = {>Why is there not an adequate and efficient answer to climate change?< is a question that has been haunting millions of people around the world for the last decades, and that is growingly being made by all publics. Despite the scientific consensus on climate change, the necessary measures to deter this phenomenon are still far from the speed and range necessary to effectively address it (when there are any measures at all). Metanarratives are the grand histories that humankind tells itself to guide its practices and actions. They either work towards solving this civilisational crisis or to stop any effective solutions. The current metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism is one of the main obstacles to stopping the climate crisis, but there is a conflict of metanarratives in the world today, and new possibilities are coming into existence. Potential future metanarratives for a different climate will either be survival of the fittest or civilising tools when human civilisation is in its most dangerous moment. The current metanarrative underpins capitalist dominance and is perpetuated through capitalist ideology and hegemony, locking humanity into a path of irreversible climate change. The unavoidable systematic change needed to effectively tackle climate change will go as deep as the social construction of what >human nature< is and what relations humans have to each other and the environment. Through an adaptation of Michael Burawoy's extended case method a methodology has been developed to evaluate the appearance of a new climate change metanarrative articulated with social justice, a climate justice potential metanarrative. A historical study on the evolution of public policy and climate policy in particular for three countries in the western mediterranean - Portugal, Spain and Morocco - was conducted. A revision of information about each of the countries, focusing on the evolution of climate and future scenarios, as well as social, economical, political and industrial tendencies, was done. There were 1107 interviews conducted for this thesis, 46 of which were face-to-face and structured. A methodological tool was developed to quantify the difference between really existing climate policy and climate action that would achieve the affirmed goals of stopping climate collapse on the three countries. Over the course of three years post-Paris Agreement enquiries were conducted in Portugal (in the ClimAdaPT.local project), in Spain and Morocco, focusing on national and local politicians, academia, social movements and private enterprises. From believing into climate change until supporting effective climate policies, there is a long path where world views, political affiliation and ideology, cultural values, perception of risks, experiencing climate change, notions of international and social justice, attribution of responsibilities and public participation play a very important role. The inquiries revealed that many personal and collective blocks are determinant in the path into reaching policies that effectively respond to the climate crisis, and that shifting world views and experiences that affect this path will be tested in the coming years. This is a qualitative expression of the current metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism and the political clashes of the present moment open the door to new metanarratives, including a potential metanarrative of climate justice. Together with other researchers 'climate policy gap' graphics were developed for Portugal, Spain and Morocco to help reveal this divide and quantify the under-reaction between diagnosis and action, through layers of political indecision, miscommunication, insufficient action and the power of the fossil fuels industries. The climate policy gaps for the three nations revealed overshoots on even the most ambitious levels of emissions reductions pledged when compared to trajectories compatible with 1.5ºC or 2ºC limits. This research suggests that there is a built-in feature of under-reaction in climate policy, which staves off any emission pathways compatible with stopping a temperature rise above 1.5ºC by 2100. The climate policy gap is a political and methodological tool that reveals systemic shortcomings of climate action, its visibility identifies benchmarks and sectors that should be activated to close these gaps in response to the growing popular demands for climate justice and it quantifies the gap between a metanarrative of globalised capitalist positivism and what is necessary to prevent reaching even the Paris Agreement's targets. 2018 and 2019 saw the emergence of a much stronger climate justice movement. The three most relevant components of this movement - Blockadia, Youth Climate Strikes (Fridays for Future) and Extinction Rebellion - have combined efforts in a global call for civil disobedience and insurgency on political lines that respond to the climate sci ence that calls for a 50\% greenhouse gas global cuts by 2030. They have put in the for paigns such as Climate Jobs are creating political programs for a social revolution in line with German Jewish philosopher Walter Benjamin's idea of revolution as the emergency break when history moves in a catastrophic direction. An early critic of the dangers posed by the threats of progress and technological development led by capitalism, Benjamin proposed an alternative view of revolution: it is not inevitable or a natural result of the contradiction between productive forces and productive relations, but rather an interruption of an historical evolution that is leading to catastrophe. These movements and programs are not enough for the emergence of a new climate justice potential metanarrative, although they are necessary conditions for it. In conclusion, there are signs of the emergence of a climate justice potential metanarrative, with a push for the creation of new institutions, adaptation of old ones, public perception of the dimension of the problem of climate change and effective legislative response to it. Some of the most expressive characteristics of this potential metanarrative were outlined: a human awakening full of impetus for social reordering; a redistribution of power, wellbeing and cooperation; a new notion of prosperity inside natural limits and just resource redistribution; reconnection of knowledges and sciences; the need for a public and participatory science to address human's and earth's needs; the teleology of humanity's collective survival; understanding and respecting life system's cycles, favouring life's diversity as an efficient tool against the current increase in entropy in the ecosphere; acknowledging and integrating the care economy into daily life, with the corresponsibilization of men and women for care and maintenance activities; recovering indigenous people's knowledge of biomimicry as a collective tool, promoting human beneficial effects on life cycles and ecosystems; understanding capitalist production's incompatibility with basic life system's principles. A new potential metanarrative for climate change is a historical novelty, but only such a novel Grand History can give humanity a chance to overcome the biggest threat it has ever faced.}, language = {en} } @article{CahyaniAhmadi, author = {Cahyani, Rachma Ika and Ahmadi, Anas}, title = {Kepribadian tokoh utama 小白 Xiǎob{\´a}idalam film >白蛇< >b{\´a}ish{\´e}< >White Snake< karya (赵霁) Zh{\`a}oj{\`i} (kajian psikologi Erich Fromm) [application of Fromm's theories to art]}, series = {Jurnal Bahasa Mandarin (UNESA), Vol. 4, No. 1 (2020), 4 pp. [ejournal.unesa.ac.id/index.php/manadarin/article/view/32598]}, journal = {Jurnal Bahasa Mandarin (UNESA), Vol. 4, No. 1 (2020), 4 pp. [ejournal.unesa.ac.id/index.php/manadarin/article/view/32598]}, abstract = {Berbicara tentang ilmu psikologi atau ilmu jiwa, dapat diketahui karakter atau kepribadian yang melekat dalam diri seorang individu. Since faith cannot be justified on purely rational grounds, Freud equated religious authority with irrational authority. But by contrast with his straightforward attitude toward science and religion, Freud's attitude toward secular and govern mental authority was profoundly ambiguous. On the one hand, his theory of the cultural superego entailed a version of social contract theory, which legitimates governmental authority because it is based on reason, presumably, and because it is designed to avert chaos, or a return to >a state of nature.< On the other hand, Freud often wrote as if secular authority, like religious authority, really derives its underlying power from unconscious phantasies at work in the depths of the psyche, rather than from reason or necessity - as if the presence of rational authority in civil society was merely a mirage, or a cover, for more primitive and irrational processes that shape the interplay between leaders and their followers. He carried on in this fashion in Totem and Taboo (1913) and even more emphatically in Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921), where he described the dynamics of group cohesion in the Church and the Army as being remarkably similar. In both of these instances, he attributed the forces that promote group cohesion and the consent of the governed to sublimated homoerotic impulses, and the existence of a group transference of (mostly positive, idealizing) feelings toward the father onto the group leader, who functions as a kind of collective ego-ideal. Social character is considered not as a typical (modal) individual character in society. As a systemic formation of social interactions, social character has non-additive (emergent) properties. Both individuals and various social communities are subjects of social character. At the individual level, social character is manifested as typical behavior traits in the process of communicating with different social groups. At the level of interpersonal, intergroup and mass communication, social character is a typical form of social interaction. Social character is the result of the mutual influence of subjects on individual behavior in the form of persuasion, suggestion, imitation and infection. The article analyzes the methods of measuring social character. It presents a test developed by one of the authors (R. B Shaikhislamov) to measure the degree of inner-, tradition- and other- directedness (according to D. Riesman' stypology). The results of the measurement of social character in the course of interviewing residents of the Republic of Bashkortostan in 2015-2016 are presented. The authors come to the conclusion about the need for a comprehensive study of social character. The following problems are of great scientific interest. What are the emergent properties of social character in stable and unstable social situations? What are the trends of changes in the social character of Russians in the post-Soviet era? How significant are the differences in the social character of different generations, ethnic groups, residents of megacities, other cities and villages? We note that it is necessary to develop a system of indicators to measure social character. In addition to such indicators as inner-, tradition- and other-directedness, it is necessary to measure social character by such variables as >dominance - subordination<, >productivity - non- Productivity<, >responsibility - irresponsibility<, >cooperation - isolation<, >trust - distrust<, >Conformity - Innovation - Ritualism - Retreatism - Rebellion<.}, language = {en} } @article{AlbertiniPanero, author = {Albertini, Egidia and Panero, Marcello}, title = {Hopes and fears in a sample of trainees: Considerations and perspectives}, series = {International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 29 (No. 3, 2020), pp. 180-187.}, journal = {International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 29 (No. 3, 2020), pp. 180-187.}, abstract = {This paper investigates hopes and fears connected with work as an analytic psychotherapist, in a sample of trainees attending the Italian Training School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (SPP). Candidates were asked to complete a questionnaire with open-ended questions. In the first analysis, we found trainees to be interested in learning an effective therapeutic method to treat patients. Their wish was for a serious, demanding, but nonjudgmental training, which could support the development of both a thoughtful way of using their thinking process and a rigorous clinical method, while respecting their individuality and personality. We asked our candidates whether theoretical concepts and issues related to the analytic method effectively helped them transform difficulties in perspectives. Theoretical tendencies and authors considered to be useful in modern clinical areas such as Internet addiction disorders, Hikikomori (severe social and relational retirement in adolescence), children's school problems, and problems connected with dimensions of parenthood (e.g. LGBT parenting) were explored. A sense of inadequacy when first dealing with difficult clinical situations, and fears about the realistic difficulties of psychotherapy as a trade, today, in Italy, were found. Considerations on the psychoanalytic educational program and on the importance of workgroups were proposed.}, language = {en} } @article{Akot, author = {Akot, B{\"u}lent}, title = {The Perspective of Psychological Freedom and Avoiding Freedom According to Erich Fromm}, series = {Hamdard Islamicus, Vol. 43 (No. 2, 2020), pp. 67-88. Without freedom, one cannot truly discover his existence in this world. It is not possible for a person to realize himself or to perform perfect servitude for the transcendent being without freedom. How can one be free? How can freedom be achieved especially psychologically? The questions were also asked a lot. In this context, a psychological definition of freedom and what are the obstacles to freedom are also important. Because the ideas of a psychologist like Erich Fromm on freedom are also important, the work has come to life around her. The study was carried out with the literature review method and was shaped by considering the views of a person about a concept. The issue of what freedom means has been debated for years. Especially in the context of Psychology and Psychology of Religion, it is aimed to conduct a study by Erich Fromm. The main goal in doing this is to satisfy a need in this field at the level of the article as much as possible. This study is composed of introduction and three parts. At the beginning of the article, the philological examination of freedom was started and its definitions were made in various fields. In the first part, it is talked about how to get psychologically free. The second Erich Fromm's understanding of freedom was tried to be found. In the third part, Erich Fromm's ways of escaping from freedom are discussed.}, language = {en} } @article{Ahnert, author = {Ahnert, Sven}, title = {Erich Fromm und die Kunst des Lebens.
