Despite an enduring influence, Fromm's theory of biophilia has been largely untested in the literature. Fromm argued that biophilia was the optimum way to conceptualise malignant aggression, and that the introduction and reward of cooperation was the best way to increase levels of biophilia, and thereby reduce levels of destructive behaviour in a population. It was the aim of this thesis to investigate whether the introduction and reward of cooperation would increase biophilia, and decrease aggression, in a population. In Studies One to Six, a trait biophilia scale was developed and psychometric validity and reliability established. In Studies Seven to Nine, scale predictive validity in comparison to existing trait measures was investigated in theoretically appropriate areas including online behaviour, positive psychology and pro-environmental behaviour. In Study Ten, a game theory paradigm for introducing and rewarding cooperation was developed, and the relationships among biophilia, cooperation and aggression were investigated. Contrary to Fromm's theory, a positive association between aggression and cooperation, and negative associations between those and biophilia, were found. In addition, the effects of introducing and rewarding cooperation were investigated, and again contrary to Fromm's theory, introducing and rewarding cooperation produced an increase in aggression and a reduction in biophilia. These findings may reflect an inherent tension within Fromm's theory between the use of existential needs, that were argued to be the product of competitive natural selection, and the use of cooperative interventions derived from Marxist theory. It is proposed that the relationships among biophilia, cooperation and aggression may be mediated by frustration. The world of forensic mental health nursing is often difficult to describe to those who have not experienced first hand prolonged clinical contact with patients at the therapeutic interface of secure services. Even then, the characteristic, intense emotional phenomena that tend to arise out of interpersonal relationships with patients and colleagues is not easy to articulate. Yet, for those of us who consider our professional identity to be one of >forensic mental health nurse,< it seems important to find a way to put words to what appears to occupy a large component of our working lives. More importantly, if we can develop a way to make sense of the way our work makes us feel and the way we can find ourselves relating to others within our professional roles, we will be in a better position to harness our energy and enthusiasm in the service of supporting forensic patients towards effective care and treatment pathways. Of course, forensic patients are supported through services with or without a framework for articulating emotional and interpersonal experiences. However, this frequently occurs in the context of significant struggle. For patients, this struggle is often characterized by difficulty communicating what their needs are, and for nurses this struggle is often characterized by feeling emotionally overwhelmed by their task of providing containing, therapeutic relationships for patients whose interpersonal needs are not clear to them. The word, alienation, originated from Latin with the following meanings: surrender, transfer, estrangement, difference, separation, insanity, etc… Later, different philosophers interpreted alienation in different ways. Hobbes explained transfer of rights with the use of alienation. As for Hegel, he considered alienation as externalization of absolute spirit. Marx's alienation theory mainly focused on laboring alienation. Luk{\´a}cs regarded alienation as materialization. Fromm argued that modern society was a collective alienating society. Based on the origins of alienation this article analyzed these classical ideas through various perspectives of its meaning and characterization such as productivity alienation, consumption alienation, science alienation, politics alienation and so on. The article also analyzed the features of alienation at different social conditions and times on the basis of traditional western sociologies, which deemed that the interaction of the relation between human being and the nature and the relation among human beings contributed to the development of human history. However, this kind of interaction must alienate at special period of human history. Additionally, this interaction could definitely choose to quit alienation at some period. Therefore, the article comes to a conclusion that alienation is a >must< way to the evolution of human society and a product of the development of human society.- Actually, alienation is a definition on relations. This article argued that alienation is that the object negate the subject during the practice process and social development and human values come into conflict in the field of social history and finally concludes that alienation exists inside the whole process of human practice and lives with the history of human being, which will not form the basis of human tragedies, but the inside motivation and source of human pursuit and the endless development of human beings. But there are different understandings for the concept of freedom. As a Marxian of Freudianism in 20th century, Fromm focused on this problem with a different way than other theorists. Fromm's thought of freedom mainly derived from the historical concept of Marx and the psychology of Freud. He investigated the origin and the developmental thread of freedom from the perspective of history and psychology. In the opinion of Fromm, man, as an individual, liberated from the chains of the Middle Age and gained the unprecedented freedom. Nevertheless, the development of Capitalist Society caused the rising of insecurity, anxiety, independent and at the same time, people also disabled to enjoy the hard-won freedom. From then on, people thought that they could forget the reality by the way of devoting themselves to the economic life and regarded them as a component of a giant machine. In order to break away from the psychological pressure and the feeling of insecurity, people changed their dreams form >Pursuit of Freedom< to the opposite side, which is called >Escape from Freedom<. In order to change this morbid concept of Freedom, Fromm proposed a scheme which consists three parts: creative works, love and to construct a sound society. In his opinion, Freedom is a prerequisite for a healthy society. We must to construct a sound society to maintain this hard-won freedom. This will be the only way to be a sound man and to realize the dream of freedom. This paper investigates the wholeness, historicity and the limitation of Fromm's theory based on the original materials and the contemporary study. The aim of this paper is to clarify the uniqueness and importance of Fromm's thought about Freedom, and further, to demonstrate the practical significance of freedom. I hope this investigation could provide valuable ideas and references for the construction of people-oriented and harmonious society. There are four parts in this paper.- First part is to investigate the background of Fromm's thought about freedom based on the society and theory situation of Fromm himself. Fromm lived in the early 80 years of 20th century. In this period happened two world wars, great depression, the Nazis came to power, nuclear weapons used in war and so on. As a result, this is the most intense period in human history. All of these events became the important observation objects for Fromm. Beside this, the special family situation and the experience became the other source of Fromm's thought.- Second part is to investigate the theoretical basement of Fromm's thought of freedom from the development of his concept of freedom. Fromm's views about freedom based on two aspects: real situation of the society and the living condition of human. In reality, man cannot escape from the dichotomy of existence and history. Fromm insists on the Marx's viewpoint of studying the human from reality, but also believes that man can hardly change his position in the history development. In contemporary capitalist society, people cannot escape from the alienation. In Fromm's opinion, humanity not only includes animality but also the sociality. So the alienation is about not only the society but also the humanity. And all of these aspects became the component of Fromm's viewpoint about freedom.- In the third part, we demonstrate the main content of Fromm's concept of freedom, the emergence of the paradox in freedom and the way of constructing a sound society. Based on the development sequences of society, he analyzes the situation of freedom in different times and the attitude toward the freedom. Then he analyzes the process that how the freedom changed into its opposite side from the perspective of history and psychology. At last, he investigates the ways to eliminate the phenomenon of >escape from freedom< from the subjective and objective perspectives.- Fourth and also the last part, we demonstrate the meaning and the limitation of the freedom by investigating the concept of Fromm's freedom. There is a specialty in Fromm's understanding about freedom, which is to bring the >problem of freedom< into psychology. But, Fromm proposed much more utopian and unrealistic way in resolving the problem of >escape from the freedom<, they are creative work, love and few reforms. Mitscherlich and Mitscherlich have talked about the inability to mourn due to the involvement of most German families in Nazi terror. The research projects >Childhood in War< at the University of Munich and >War Children and their Flight< at the Hamburg DPG Institute are studying the long-term implications of a childhood during World War II and the Nazi period. In most cases, the personal development of the >war children< was affected - in the case of psychoanalysts, their psychoanalytic socialisation and current professional practice as well. The transgenerational transmission forms an NS introject in the personality. Due to their parents' lack of empathy, war children are unconsciously looking for a containment of their unbearable feelings in their childhood. Psychoanalysis (including training analysis) becomes a stage where the analysee's childhood loneliness, the taboo-forming, the inhibition to ask and the protection of the parents, as well as feelings of guilt and embarrassment in the family, not talking about matters, and silence, occur once more in transference.}, language = {en} } @article{EspinosaRugarcia, author = {Espinosa Rugarc{\´i}a, Amparo}, title = {Freud y Buda coquetean}, series = {Instituto Mexicano de Psicoan{\´a}lisi (Ed.), Fromm, humanismo y psicoan{\´a}lisi, M{\´e}xico Vol. 2 (2009), pp. 58-63.}, journal = {Instituto Mexicano de Psicoan{\´a}lisi (Ed.), Fromm, humanismo y psicoan{\´a}lisi, M{\´e}xico Vol. 2 (2009), pp. 58-63.}, language = {es} } @article{Fauteux, author = {Fauteux, Kevin}, title = {Self-Reparation In Religious Experience and Countertransference}, series = {The Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 37 (2009), pp. 049-058.}, journal = {The Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 37 (2009), pp. 049-058.}, language = {en} } @article{Feigenblatt, author = {Feigenblatt, Otto Federico von}, title = {Anomie, Racial Wage, and Critical Aesthetics: Understanding the Negative Externalities of Japanese and Thai Social Practices}, series = {Journal of Asia Pacific Studies, Vol. 1, No. 1 (2009), pp. 69-75.
