@misc{FrommTerkel, author = {Fromm, Erich and Terkel, Studs}, title = {Do We Still Have the Choice Between Life and Death? Studs Terkel interviewing Erich Fromm. Interview (42') broadcasted 1963 by the Radio Station WFMT, Chicago.}, number = {transcription / Transkript}, abstract = {The interview starts with introducing the psychodynamics of narcissism as being only focused on idealized aspects of oneself that results in a paranoic thinking, feeling and acting. Of special interest is group narcissism where >my religion, my nation, my race is the most wonderful thing<. If such a fantasized grandiosity is shared by the group the individual ceases to feel insignificant and isolated; on the contrary, one can feel great, just like everyone else. Hence group narcissism can explain the dangerous impacts of nationalism. Another danger arises from the objectification of human beings and the bureaucratization of relationships, as illustrated by Adolph Eichmann or by necrophilic tendencies. The question then is whether we are still capable of choosing between life and death, that is, whether we are >free to make the choice between destruction or life.< If the love for life is frustrated or even thwarted, then necrophilia may be the answer. In essence, what we need is a renaissance of a new humanism. Fromm uses the term >organization man<, coined by William Whyte, to describe a process of reification by which humans mentally become things and behave in the functional way of things. When people become things, they lose their emotional vitality which is compensated by entertainment and consumerism: >We are consumption crazy. Our passion is to use and to have and not to be.< To return to living beings Fromm reminds to the religious and humanistic ideas and to choose life again.
