The present study undertakes a scoping review of the effectiveness of psychoanalysis for bipolar disorder (BD), provides a summary of the evidence base, and identifies issues for future research in this area. A thorough search of journal articles in MEDLINE, PEP-Web, PsycINFO, Scopus, and the Web of Science was carried out to obtain available studies on psychoanalytic treatment for BD published from 1990 to 2021. We searched for either quantitative or single-case studies. Twenty-six single-case reports from 21 articles and no quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria. A qualitative analysis suggests efficacy and cost-effectiveness but thus far there is no scientific evidence in support of psychoanalysis. Although these pilot findings suggest that psychoanalysis may impact symptoms and global functioning in individuals with BD, the underlying evidence is poor and should be confirmed by experimental studies.}, language = {en} } @article{Sistermann, author = {Sistermann, Rolf}, title = {>Dem b{\"o}sen Menschen das gute Gewissen zur{\"u}ckgeben<. I analyze its role in the dynamics of change based on the interaction between the psyche and the social. In Fromm's conceptual framework, benign aggression results from an unlived life, shaped by limitations on individuals' freedoms, supported by institutional and oppressive structures in a neo-capitalistic society. I explore how benign aggression, replayed between patient and therapist, can bring about changes in the self and modes of relatedness, leading to the recognition of humanistic values. In my practice, projective identification and attachment -detachment dynamics were experienced as forms of benign aggression, while anger and conflict became a way to acknowledge them. Fragments of two clinical cases illustrate how needs for relatedness-through-conflict are experienced. Relatedness expressed through a negative form of attachment can lead to the co-creation of a psychic space, a >Social Third< where ethical values are experienced and shared. This Frommian conceptual framework and methodology require total connectedness with a subject, together with the recognition and acceptance of an >Other< unto oneself. In my experience, such recognition encourages the emergence of humanistic values.}, language = {en} } @article{SevillaValejo, author = {Sevilla-Valejo, Santiago}, title = {La identidad h{\´i}brida a trav{\´e}s de los mapas en >Escenario de guerra< (2000) de Andrea Jeftanovic [Hybrid Identity through Mapping in Andrea Jeftanovic's >Escenario de guerra< (2000)] [application of Fromm's theories to art]}, series = {Am{\´e}rica sin Nombre, Vol. 30 (2024), pp. 122-138. These functions become systemically associated with our emotional experience, forming mental correlates that affect our mental development throughout our lifespan. Furthermore, these mental correlates lead to the construction of an interface between the functions of the digestive system and our emotional experience. Advancing these notions will be centered around the idea that the digestive system, primarily the parts associated with the functioning of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach, produces sensations no different and no less consequential than the sensory experience produced by our other senses. Thus, and building on the work of Bion, Anzieu, and others, it is further suggested that the above-mentioned parts of the digestive system should be considered a part of our sensory make-up. In addition to its digestive functions, this system is assumed to play an essential role in the composure of our psychic infrastructure and mental development. Finally, special attention is given to the relevance of these ideas to the study of eating disorders. These issues are explored with the purpose of pointing to some potential links between the functions of the digestive system and the specific manifestations of eating disorders.
