From object to subject: The empowerment of female superheroes

  • The purpose of this research is to present the empowerment of female-led superheroes in the cinematic universe. Most recently Wonder Woman has debuted a new era, with Captain Marvel, and Black Widow following suit. The literature review addresses the superhero genre from comic to film, and its rise to popularity. It further underlines the sociocultural impact of superheroes, conveying messages of hope and justice, and battling serious issues. Specifically, the relation to gender is drawn and presents superheroines under stereotype threats. This is followed by findings of other research and studies proposing the importance of representation. We will take a thorough look at Wonder Woman’s legacy paving the way for colleagues. The film analysis on the film Wonder Women (2017) will present findings that apply to sociocultural and gender theories. Additionally, highlighted by examples comparable with Captain Marvel (2019), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), and Black Widow (2021).
