This paper explores the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on human-nature interaction and connection in Germany using practice theories. It further asks about the related potential for a societal transformation towards sustainability. The research draws on the data collected in the framework of the citizen science study 'Logbook of Change', conducted by the Eberswalde University of Sustainable Development (HNEE), as well as a systematic literature review. It understands human-nature interactions as practices, and human-nature connection as one element of meaning. Based on the data analysis, it finds that the increase in human-nature interactions did not correlate with a comparable increase in human-nature connection. Thus, there is little evidence that human-nature interactions and, as one aspect, connection with nature, will contribute to a social transformation towards sustainability. The research raises the question to what extend people truly engaged with nature during the pandemic and suggests that the human-nature interactions performed during the COVID-19 pandemic represent a certain form of exploitation of nature.
